The objective of the article is to compare a score derived from directly measuring magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) total erosion volumes and total bone volumes using a semi-automated computerised method in the wrists of patients with rheumatoid arthritis with the existing OMERACT RAMRIS semi-quantitative MRI erosion scoring system. 15 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis were evaluated by MRI of the dominant wrist at initiation of treatment with anti-TNF agents. The MRI scans were performed on a T scanner, and the sequences included the OMERACT 'core set' of basic MRI sequences. Each bone was scored according to the OMERACT RAMRIS score on a scale, based on the proportion of eroded bone compared to the 'assessed bone volume', judged on all available images. All images with erosions were transferred to a workstation, and total erosion volume and total bone volume were calculated using OSIRIS software.

Despite UML`s successes since its standardization in 1997, development tools have been slow to realize its full potential. In addition, the software industry has evolved considerably during the last six years, and the first version of UML (UML 1.x) is now dated. The proposed major revision of UML, version 2.0, will make the language more current and improve its expressive power and precision. The finalization of the major revision is expected to be followed by updates to modeling tools that implement the powerful new UML 2.0 features.

Colleges and universities are increasingly migrating towards utilising the World Wide Web to convey at least part of, and in many cases, their entire curricular offering. Despite this trend there is little support for the professors responsible for translating courses refined over a career in the classroom for delivery via the Web. Teachers who are experts in their subject area and masters of their craft when in a classroom find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to relearn how to teach in a new environment with little or no support. development of an online course is, in many significant aspects, analogous to developing a computer product. The procedures and tools utilised in the software engineering field to manage computer software development, therefore, offer promise for developing online courses. This paper explores the potential of one process developed for the software engineering field-the System development Lifecycle (SDL)-as a tool to effectively design and develop online college courses.

software testing is an integral, costly, and time-consuming activity in the softwaredevelopment life cycle. As is true for softwaredevelopment in general, reuse of common artifacts can provide a significant gain in productivity. In addition, because testing involves running the system being tested under a variety of configurations and circumstances, automation of execution-related activities offers another potential source of savings in the testing process. This paper explores the opportunities for reuse and automation in one test organization, describes the shortcomings of potential solutions that are available "off the shelf," and introduces a new solution for addressing the questions of reuse and automation: the software Testing Automation Framework (STAF), a multiplatform, multilanguage approach to reuse. It is based on the concept of reusable services that can be used to automate major activities in the testing process. The design of STAF is described. Also discussed is how it was employed to automate a resource-intensive test suite used by an actual testing organization within IBM.

IN TRADITIONAL COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS, USERS actively choose to interact with computers. Ubiquitous computing applications are likely to be different-they will be embedded in the users' physical environments and integrate seamlessly with their everyday tasks. This vision leads to a set of defining characteristics, requirements, and research challenges for ubiquitous applications. This article identifies some of the key characteristics via a possible real-world scenario and derives the important application design and software infrastructure challenges that must be addressed by the computing research community.
Agile softwaredevelopment methodologies are gaining popularity in industry although they comprise a mix of accepted and controversial software engineering practices. It is quite likely that the software industry will...

We propose a whole-class view of microworld design, in which the total ecology of students, technology, and teacher is considered by the decisions and choices of the design. Through a case-study analysis of a classroom implementation, we illustrate a dynamic geometry microworld designed using such an approach and attempt to identify both the effects such an approach has on student affect and participation and the roles that educational technology fills in such a social context. We argue that whole-class microworld design not only has practical benefits in terms of classroom time and management, but also develops social interactions conducive to educative learning experiences.
