Current musical practices point to convergent research trends that bring together eco-composition, cooperative composition, mobile music and networked music. We present results of three compositional studies devised to test three musical interaction metaphors for ubiquitous computing contexts: the cup metaphor, time tagging and spatial tagging. These metaphors were developed through a conceptual and methodological framework that places compositional activities within the context of softwaredevelopment. We discuss the theoretical underpinnings of our approach and propose ubiquitous music as a frame of reference for this type of research.

In this article the author discusses his reflection as a column editor at the 'software Spotlight' journal from 2002 to 2010. He says that during his appointment, the journal aims to offer readers with a concise summary of useful software packages. He adds that the published columns for software in the journal were divided into six categories including graphical user interfaces of numerical modeling, internet resources on groundwater data retrieval, and perspectives for softwaredevelopment.

birgHPC, a bootable Linux Live CD has been developed to create high-performance clusters for bioinformatics and molecular dynamics studies using any Local Area Network (LAN)-networked computers. birgHPC features automated hardware and slots detection as well as provides a simple job submission interface. The latest versions of GROMACS, NAMD, mpiBLAST and ClustalW-MPI can be run in parallel by simply booting the birgHPC CD or flash drive from the head node, which immediately positions the rest of the PCs on the network as computing nodes. Thus, a temporary, affordable, scalable and high-performance computing environment can be built by non-computing-based researchers using low-cost commodity hardware.

This software note describes an extension to the conservation planning package Marxan in which multiple solutions can be evaluated instead of only relying on the measures of best solution and irreplaceability. For this extension we coupled Marxan with the statistical software R. The pool of possible conservation plans is transferred from Marxan into R - which returns an ordination plot, as well as a cluster dendrogram that can be used to evaluate similarity of solutions. Also, the most efficient solutions per group are flagged. We believe that identification of alternative planning options facilitates review and implementation of Marxan solutions as negotiating parties have multiple alternative starting points.

The authors reflect on the works of professor Meir M. 'Manny' Lehman known as 'Father of software Evolution.' They state that after the best known work of Lehman, which is the Laws of software Evolution, software engineering recognized the need for continuous changes to real-world software systems to satisfy new and evolving user requirements and expectations to adapt to technological innovation. They add that laws formulated by Lehman provided useful insights to understanding software process.

After a thorough analysis of the industrial needs and of the limitations of current simulation tools. EDF and CEA (Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique) launched the NEPTUNE Project in 2001 (see Guelfi et al., 2007) with the support of AREVA-NP and IRSN. The NEPTUNE activities include softwaredevelopment, research in physical modeling and numerical methods, development of advanced instrumentation techniques and new experimental programs. Four different simulation scales were addressed including DNS (Direct Numerical Simulation), CFD in open medium (Computational Fluid Dynamics), component (subchannel-type analysis) and system (reactor modeling) scales. In 2006 CEA, EDF, AREVA-NP and IRSN defined the strategy for the system scale of NEPTUNE and the CATHARE-3 development was launched. The main objectives are: advanced physical modeling of two-phases flows, mainly by using multi-field and turbulence models, improved 3D modeling by the use of fine and non conforming structured meshes, generalized coupling capabilities with other thermal-hydraulic scales and with other disciplines (core physics, structural mechanics,...), extension of the applicability to new Gen IV reactors (Sodium Cooled Fast Breeder Reactors, Gas Cooled Reactors, Supercritical Light Water Reactors), a true object-oriented code architecture. At the same time CATHARE-3 is in continuity with the CATHARE-2 code which is the current industrial version of CATHARE and internationally used for nuclear power plant safety analysis, in simulators and in coupled simulation tools. The road map of these two codes will allow a smooth transition from CATHARE-2 to CATHARE-3 for all users. This paper gives an overview of the choices made for the development of CATHARE-3 including new physical models, validation strategy and experimental programs, numerical improvements, enhanced coupling capability and software architecture evolution. The current status of the project as well as the overall schedule will be presented. (C

A brief review of structure-properties relationships, at different scales, is given. Structure analysis puts emphasis on the use of synchrotron radiation. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and scattering-diffraction complement each other to provide local and average crystal structure, as well as nano- to mesoscopic aggregate structures. softwaredevelopment is presented and case studies are divulged. Properties characterization at atomic scale is performed by first principles methods. Space-time crystal symmetry analysis leads to pertinent selection rules for electromagnetic properties. Electric polarization is calculated via the Berry-phase model. Crystallographic texture plays a significant role on materials properties. Programs ANAELU and SAMZ for texture-properties analysis are presented.

The free, libre, and open source software (FLOSS) movement is often cited as an example of fundamental changes in production associated with the rise of information networks. Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams see it as an example ofwikinomics,a powerful new form of economic production based on sharing and self-organization.1Yochai Benkler argues that the form of social or peer production evident in FLOSS can compete with or even displace traditional forms of capitalist organization and sees it as a symptom of the “networked information economy,” replacing the “industrial information economy,” which has been in force since the late-nineteenth century.2The main feature of this networked information economy is the much greater role within it fordecentralized individual action.3This essay contests this broadly liberal take on the significance of the free software movement. It argues that Benkler is typical of an approach that tends to view the Internet as the primary enabler of decentralization (for example, in the form of decentralized softwaredevelopment). Of course, it would be foolish to discount the role that networks have played in the success of FLOSS. But, as I will argue, an examination of its history suggests that its origins can’t be entirely accounted for in purely technological and economic grounds. The proponents of such an approach often resist the claim that their focus on networks is technologically determinist,4arguing that the network itself is shaped by social and cultural factors. However, this makes the explanatory power of networks rather circular: the existence of networks explains social and cultural behavior at the same time as being explained by it. The explanation of free software in terms of the economic properties of networks is simply too static and asocial; it serves to explain how a particular mode of production can functionally compete with the market without really being able to account for how this change has come about. Since 2004 there has been an acceleration in offshoring tasks that engender high-level skills. The aim of this article is to examine the offshoring of softwaredevelopment to the Ukraine from the perspective of sender countries. We report the data gathered from interviews with CEOs or senior managers in Europe and the US that offshore softwaredevelopment to the Ukraine. We use a three-fold conceptual framework to analyse the data, which focuses on;structural embeddedness to identify constraining influences;cognitive-cultural embeddedness to examine how firms leverage tacit knowledge and network embeddedness to understand the role of offshoring in wider corporate strategies. We conclude that while offshoring to the Ukraine has brought higher level employment for individuals, territorially and temporally it is weakly embedded.

Moving from a traditional dialect geography research methodology to one in which data are processed electronically, and where visualization is used as a research tool, can be of great benefit to dialect geography. A working environment offering full support for using visualization as a research tool could take dialect geography into the era of e-Science. Despite the advent of electronic data processing, electronic publishing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), an analysis of the most important computerized tools for dialect geography research suggests that there is little support for the use of modern data mining and analysis techniques connected to visualization for the analysis and interpretation of dialect data. In this article, we use the electronic publication of two major dialect dictionaries to illustrate the value of visualization as a research tool by showing how visual data mining and combining dialect data with independent data sets applies to dialect geography research. We argue that there is no need for large-scale softwaredevelopment because visualization, as a research tool, is supported to a large extent by geo-browsers such as 'Google Earth', which make it possible to flexibly combine and visualize different types of geo-referenced data.
