The authors develop an efficient error-resilient scheme for the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) technique, one of the most successful image compression algorithms. By partitioning the coded data sequence and adding appropriate side information, the proposed algorithm provides significantly better PSNR performance over noisy channels with a minimal increase in the coding complexity.

Robust detection of small and dense objects in images from autonomous aerial vehicles

Aerial images obtained from autonomous aerial vehicles have lots of small and densely distributed objects because of the capture distance. This paper proposes a deep neural network architecture and training/inference techniques for robust detection of objects in the aerial images. Based on cascade R-CNN, the proposed model adopts the recursive feature pyramid and switchable atrous convolution for robust detection of dense objects. A patch-level division and multi-scale inference techniques are applied to effectively detect small objects. The results show that the proposed approach achieves the highest performance on the VisDrone test-dev dataset, in the official ECCV VisDrone2020-DET challenge.

Edge detection-based block motion estimation

Block matching algorithms that predict the motion field using blocks of pixels use search heuristics to find the best match. Blocks on the boundary of moving objects create problems for accurately predicting tb: motion vectors, and make fur uncomfortable viewing. The authors propose a new method for accurately determining the motion vectors using the edge-matching criteria. This method gives good motion estimation, with reduced computational requirements.

Augmenting photometric stereo with coaxial illumination

The authors propose a new photometric stereo (PS) method that augments a conventional four-light approach with coaxial illumination. The new method is based on a four-light, leave-one-out approach: the authors argue that coaxial lighting improves robustness to shadowing and specular highlights. The authors also specify a method to detect pixels that are shadowed or that do not conform to Lambert's law. The approach is tested on cylinders of various materials. The authors found that for dielectrics the method gave reliable results for gradients in the range -2 to 2. The results lead them to conclude that coaxial illumination makes PS more robust to shadow and specularity.

General framework of the construction of biorthogonal wavelets based on Bernstein bases: theory analysis and application in image compression

The authors present a general framework of the construction of biorthogonal wavelets based on Bernstein bases along with theory analysis and application. The presented framework possesses the largest possible regularity, the required vanishing moments and the passband flatness of frequency response of filters. Based on this concept, the authors establish explicit formulas for filters of biorthogonal wavelets with arbitrary odd lengths. Meanwhile, a new family of parametric filters with symmetry is constructed. The choice of filter bank in wavelet compression is a critical issue that affects image quality. In this study, an optimal model of FIR aiming at image compression is brought forward, and the optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filters can be obtained correspondingly through sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and genetic algorithm (GA). The authors demonstrate the performance of the new family of filters given in this study for image compression with very encouraging results.

Predictive control of nonlinear visual servoing systems using image moments

The visual servoing architectures with an eye-in-hand configuration, composed of a 6-d. o.f. manipulator robot and a video camera, are categorised as high-coupled and nonlinear systems. For this reason, in order to have a stable and convergent behaviour, advanced techniques like predictive control are needed. These types of techniques can solve the potential problems that can appear in classical (image-based visual servoing) while different type of constraints for visual servoing system can be fulfilled easier. Three different visual predictive control architectures based on image moments are proposed. The model for the image moments predictor used in the first architecture is an extension of a local model point features predictor. The second predictive approach uses an image moment-based predictor to describe the future behaviour of the system over a certain camera velocity scenario directly in the image moments space. In order to have a faster convergence and in the same time a desired behaviour of the servoing system, a reference trajectory is employed. This represents the main contribution of the last predictive control technique proposed in this study. A Matlab simulator was developed and all the visual servoing architectures described in the study were implemented. The simulation results showed that all the proposed visual predictive control approaches are stable and convergent when dealing with visual servoing tasks, but the best performances were assigned to the reference trajectory-based image moments architecture.

Face recognition from synchronised visible and near-infrared images

The improvement in face recognition that can be obtained from the simultaneous availability of normal and near-infrared (NIR) images is quantitatively measured. The authors designed a camera that can perform a simultaneous acquisition of a NIR image and visible images (VI) and therefore built a face database with this camera aiming at comparing the performance of several algorithms on both types of images when illumination variations occur. The authors noticed the stability of the performance of all the tested algorithms on infrared images upon illumination variation, and the improvement in performance that results from the fusion of these two different types of images.

Security augmentation grounded on Fresnel and Arnold transforms using hybrid chaotic structured phase mask

A novel asymmetric double image encryption technique is introduced to protect the algorithm from the interlopers by using hybrid chaotic structured phase masks in Arnold and Fresnel transforms. Mostly random phase masks are used routinely in many algorithms which are not strong against many attacks. So, taking in consideration replacing of random phase masks with the new hybrid chaotic structured phase masks takes place in the algorithm. With the assistance of Fresnel zone plates, radial Hilbert mask and logistic map functions, the chaotic structured phase mask is accumulated and hybrid chaotic structured phase mask provides extra security to system. Arnold transform helps in pixel shuffling, and with the pixel reorganization, it also helps in image reaping and bordering. The propagation distance of the Fresnel transform and the constraints of the Arnold transform serve as keys for encryption and decryption. To check the sturdiness of hybrid chaotic structured phase mask, simulations have been done which are carried out by the support of MATLAB R2018a (9.4.0.813654).

Reconstruction of textured seafloors from side-scan sonar images

The seafloor is subject to attention and exploitation in many branches of science and technology. The acquisition of seabed information using AUVs equipped with a visual system composed of cameras and sonars is becoming more common. However, although most of these sensors, such as side-scan sonar, can generate a 2-D representation of the seafloor, 3-D information, which is crucial for environmental and geological studies, is only provided by a few sensors and often only at very low resolution. A linear shape-from-shading approach is presented, which is novel in the context of side-scan sonar images. This technique aims to recover the 3-D shape of textured seabeds from side-scan sonar images. For comparison purposes, an existing propagation shape from shading approach is also considered. Results showed that both techniques yield good results in terms of similarity and accuracy, although the linear shape-from-shading technique presented superior results when noise was present in the images, a condition which is very common with side-scan sonar images.
