Hand vein biometry based on geometry and appearance methods

Many biometric systems, such as face, fingerprint and iris have been studied extensively for personal verification and identification purposes. Biometric identification with vein patterns is a more recent approach that uses the vast network of blood vessels underneath a person's skin. These patterns in the hands are assumed to be unique to each individual and they do not change over time except in size. As veins are under the skin and have a wealth of differentiating features, an attempt to copy an identity is extremely difficult. These properties of uniqueness, stability and strong immunity to forgery of the vein patterns make it a potentially good biometric trait which offers greater security and reliable features for personal identification. In this study, the authors present a novel hand vein database and a biometric technique based on the statistical processing of the hand vein patterns. The BOSPHORUS hand vein database has been collected under realistic conditions in that subjects had to undergo the procedures of holding a bag, pressing an elastic ball and cooling with ice, all exercises that force changes in the vein patterns. The applied recognition techniques are a combination of geometric and appearance-based techniques and good identification performances have been obtained on the database.

Open-loop rate control for JPEC-LS near lossless image compression

A low cost rate control scheme is presented to achieve an open-loop rare control for JPEG-LS near lossless coding mode, the forthcoming new standard for lossless image compression. The scheme is implemented by further exploitation of the local texture analysis, designed in JPEG-LS, to indicate the compressibility indirectly. Hence, the information loss level may be controlled automatically and can be adaptive to the local texture. Consequently, a similar compression ratio is maintained for different images.

Surveillance video motion segmentation based on the progressive spatio-temporal tunnel flow model

Motion segmentation is the first and important step of surveillance video summarisation, and traditional motion segmentation methods usually process all video data, which seriously affects the real-time performance of video synopsis. To address this issue, a novel method of surveillance video motion segmentation based on the progressive spatio-temporal tunnel (STT) flow model is proposed in this letter. Unlike traditional video segmentation methods, the proposed one only analyses the pixels on the circular sampling lines of video frames. Initially, the circular progressive STT is established by sampling pixels progressively. Subsequently, the progressive STT is expanded to form an STT expansion diagram and the STT expansion diagram is modelled as progressive STT flow. Finally, surveillance video motion fragments are segmented according to the progressive STT flow model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of time consumption. This is accomplished with a comparable motion segmentation precision.

Detection-estimation based approach for impulsive noise removal

A new algorithm for effectively removing impulsive noise in digital images is proposed. The computationally efficient algorithm presented first classifies corrupted pixels and then performs median filtering for them only. New efficiency factors are introduced to compare the performance of the noise detection algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing methods in terms of both objective and subjective evaluations.

Rate-driven key frame selection using temporal variation of visual content

A simple and fast method to select the assigned number of key frames in a video shot is presented. The algorithm selects the key frames so that the temporal variation of visual content within a video shot is equally distributed to each hey frame. Simulation results on a real video sequence are in agreement with the human visual perception.

DAN-Conv: Depth aware non-local convolution for LiDAR depth completion

Sparse LiDAR depth completion is a beneficial task for many robotic applications. It commonly generates a dense depth prediction from a sparse depth map and its corresponding aligned RGB image. This image-guided depth completion task mainly has two challenges: sparse data processing and multi-modality data fusion. In this letter, they are dealt with by two novel solutions: (1) To efficiently process sparse depth input, a Depth Aware Non-local Convolution (DAN-Conv) is proposed. It augments the spatial sampling locations of a convolution operation. Specifically, DAN-Conv constructs a non-local neighbourhood relationship by exploiting the intrinsic correlation among observable depth pixels. In particular, it can readily replace standard convolution without introducing additional network parameters. (2) A Symmetric Co-attention Module (SCM) is proposed to fuse and enhance features from depth and image domain. It estimates the importance of complementary features by the co-attention mechanism. Finally, a neural network built on DAN-Conv and SCM is proposed. It achieves competitive performance on the challenging KITTI depth completion benchmark. Comparing to approaches with approximate accuracy, this lightweight network requires significantly fewer learnable parameters.

Detection of microcalcifications in mammograms using local maxima and adaptive wavelet transform analysis

A method for computer-aided diagnosis of microcalcification clusters in mammogram images is presented. Microcalcification clusters which are an early sign of breast cancer appear as isolated bright spots in mammograms. Therefore they correspond to local maxima of the image. The local maxima of the image is first detected and they are ranked according to a higher-order statistical test performed over the subband domain data.

Map data watermarking using generalised square mask

An algorithm for watermark insertion and extraction on the vector image, such as map data, is presented. Most parts of the vector image, such as map data, consist of the array of the coordinate values. At first, the image is partitioned into blocks with the same area and every vertex coordinate value within a block is changed to a new coordinate value with an origin at the south-west vertex of the mask belonging to the associated block. According to the value of watermark, the insertion area is different. Unlike the work by Sakamoto et al, it should be possible to use a square mask of arbitrary size. The mask of the Sakamoto et al.'s, work is specific since the length of the mask is 2(R) - 1 where R = 1, 2,...., n. It is also shown that the proposed method is superior to the previous work against noise attack.
