The aim of this commentary is to discuss the contribution of soft computing-a consortium of fuzzy logic, neural network theory, evolutionary computing, and probabilistic reasoning-to the development of case-based reasoning (CBR) systems. We will describe how soft computing has been used in case representation, retrieval, adaptation, reuse, and case-base maintenance, and then present a brief summary of six CBR applications that use soft computing techniques.

Photorefractive polymers have great potential in applications such as all-optical switching and optical communication. Here, new charge-transporting polymers are presented based on a polysiloxane backbone with pendant carbazole groups, which provide both transport and room-temperature poling properties without the need for additional plasticizing components. A quantitative evaluation of the phase behavior of holographic gratings based on the new materials is also presented.

Consequently, the reliability of embedded software is crucial for many aspectsof daily life. In the past, the development of embedded software has been implementation-centric;however, due to an increase in size and complexity of software and a reduction in development time,it is difficult to produce reliable software using conventional techniques. A technique proposed earlier for calculating radiowave attenuation in satellite communication lines is improved. The input data for the new calculation technique are those from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) database, which contains information on the entire planet. It is shown that the results of calculations performed using the improved technique agree well with experimental data obtained at 40 and 50 GHz.

The emerging paradigm of 'abundant-data' computing requires real-time analytics on enormous quantities of data collected by a mushrooming network of sensors. Todays computing technology, however, cannot scale to satisfy such big data applications with the required throughput and energy efficiency. The next technology frontier will be monolithically integrated chips with three-dimensionally interleaved memory and logic for unprecedented data bandwidth with reduced energy consumption. In this work, we exploit the atomically thin nature of the graphene edge to assemble a resistive memory (similar to 3 angstrom thick) stacked in a vertical three-dimensional structure. We report some of the lowest power and energy consumption among the emerging non-volatile memories due to an extremely thin electrode with unique properties, low programming voltages, and low current. Circuit analysis of the three-dimensional architecture using experimentally measured device properties show higher storage potential for graphene devices compared that of metal based devices.

The way to solve the problem of satellite constellation design was outlined in the 1960s, recognizing the importance of satellite coverage (continuous or periodic) function and allowing interpretation of the operation of different types of space systems. Due to the fact that Earth periodic coverage optimization is extremely complex, for many years, the solutions of this problem have been searched for among a priori fixed constellation types successfully implemented before for continuous coverage, with continuous coverage seeming to be much easier than periodic coverage. In this study, it is shown that the technological advance in satellite constellation design for periodic coverage could be achieved by considering it as a unique and separate problem. The introduction in the route theory for satellite constellation design for Earth periodic coverage that aims at creating methods for optimization of arbitrary constellations, which is an alternative to the traditional approach that considers narrow classes of constellations to be analyzed, is described. The so-called route constellation is presented as a mathematical abstraction for approximation of arbitrary satellite constellation. The theory elements of the optimization procedure in the infinite domain of route constellations are introduced. Previously unknown regularities in Earth periodic coverage and in localization of optimal low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation parameters are presented and illustrated.
