Background: As wireless communication technologies evolve, probe-based travel-time collection systems are becoming popular around the globe. However, two problems generally arise in probe-based systems: one is the outlier and the other is time lag. To resolve the problems, methods for outlier removal and travel-time prediction need to be applied. Methods: In this study, data processing methods for addressing the two issues are proposed. After investigating the characteristic of the travel times on the test section, the modified z-score was suggested for censoring outliers contained in probe travel times. To mitigate the time-lag phenomenon, a recurrent neural network, a class of deep learning where temporal sequence data are normally treated, was applied to predict travel times. Results: As a result of evaluation with ground-truth data obtained through test-car runs, the proposed methods showed enhanced performances with prediction errors lower than 13% on average compared to current practices. Conclusion: The suggested methods can make drivers to better arrange their trip schedules with real-time travel-time information with improved accuracy. © 2020 Jinhwan Jang.

This paper presents a novel approach to structural health monitoring (SHM) in aeronautical composite materials, leveraging embedded sensor data and advanced machine learning techniques for enhanced performance and simplified fault detection and identification. The study introduces an in-situ sensing system that integrates polymer-based piezoelectric sensors within the composite structure, enabling direct measurement and high-quality data acquisition. By employing a Gram angle field-based time-frequency transformation, the proposed method captures fault information from the in-situ measurements effectively. The study validates the effectiveness of the proposed approach by successfully completing diagnostic validation and identification of single and compound faults, such as scratches, holes, cuts, and other defects, using simple machine learning models. The findings of this study highlight the potential of combining in-situ sensing and advanced machine learning techniques for improved structural health monitoring in aeronautical composite materials.

The echelle spectrometer is a sophisticated instrument used for high-resolution spectral analysis, with key applications in ICP, LIBS, and astronomy. Its accuracy in measuring wavelengths largely depends on the data processing methods employed, which have been continuously refined since the instrument's inception. This review provides an overview of the data processing workflow for echelle spectrometers, organized into three main steps: spectral model construction, spectral model optimization, and wavelength extraction. Each step is systematically reviewed, highlighting common methods and principles, along with their respective advantages and limitations. Additionally, the review explores anticipated trends in spectral model construction and optimization techniques. Efficient and precise data processing is essential, as it directly impacts the performance of echelle spectrometers and expands their range of applications.

Nowadays professionals from the Cultural Heritage field make use of Digital technology in all its diversity as a tool to conduct various type of work : archeological and architectural survey, monitoring, conservation programs, historic researches. This paper describes the first steps of a PhD research aiming at exploring the use of analog photographs from the French-Egyptian center for the study of Karnak Temples (CFEETK) in photogrammetry. The goal is to compare previous condition state of monuments in the 20th century with their contemporary condition and to introduce 3D model in correlation databases. The paper presents the context of the study and the complex of Karnak temples then the set of archives photographs that are used and how they are processed. At this stage, sets of analog photographs from the White Chapel were used in Agisoft Metashape combined with contemporary photographs to provide visuals from the condition of the monument after its restoration in 1985.

The development of a telecontrol system for a ship-mounted two-DoF manipulator is greatly required since it must be controlled from the control room of a ship and subjected to random ocean waves. This paper addresses such a task by developing a human-machine interface (HMI) based graphical user interface (GUI). The features cover control and monitoring of the manipulator system as well as object tracking. The HMI is embedded in a console box via a personal computer (PC) and capable of accessing sensors and actuators through a microcontroller. data processing and communication techniques are also proposed to avoid overlap or lag for real-time implementation. Experimental results show that the telecontrol system successfully monitors and control the manipulator system as well as track the objects using an image processing algorithm.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is an intuitive and multidimensional analysis method that provides spatial information on molecules in tissues or cells;it is widely used in biomedical research. However, MSI data sets are large and complex, and the quality of data processing directly affects its practical application. Fortunately, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has greatly simplified MSI data integration and image processing. The continued development of AI keeps enhancing MSI, and the integration of MSI and AI has benefited biomedical research. However, few reports summarize the recent developments in this important field. This review summarizes AI uses in currently reported MSI technology, including the introduction of the workflow for MSI data processing and mining, and provides examples of MSI combined with AI in disease diagnosis, tissue heterogeneity research, and tumor classification.

Condition identification is the basis of induction motor condition monitoring. However, existing non-invasive methods have different degrees of problems in accuracy, robustness and generalization. To solve this challenge, this paper proposes a new method to identify induction motor working conditions, including speed and load torque. This method is a physical-empirical hybrid model method, which combines the advantages of a clear mechanism of the physical model method and easy implementation of the empirical model method. The proposed method introduces the multi-dimensional empirical information contained in the stator current, and the fitting function adopted has a solid physical basis, so the proposed method has the innate advantages of high identification accuracy and strong robustness. The experimental results show that the working conditions identified by the proposed method are in good agreement with the real values. Moreover, by comparing with other existing condition identification methods, the advantages of the proposed method in condition identification accuracy are further verified. © 2022 IEEE.

The Internet of Things is underpinned by the global penetration of network-connected smart devices continuously generating extreme amounts of raw data to be processed in a timely manner. Supported by Cloud and Fog/Edge infrastructures – on the one hand, and Big data processing techniques – on the other, existing approaches, however, primarily adopt a vertical offloading model that is heavily dependent on the underlying network bandwidth. That is, (constrained) network communication remains the main limitation to achieve truly agile IoT data management and processing. This paper aims to bridge this gap by defining Clustered Edge Computing – a new approach to enable rapid data processing at the very edge of the IoT network by clustering edge devices into fully functional decentralized ensembles, capable of workload distribution and balancing to accomplish relatively complex computational tasks. This paper also proposes ECStream processing that implements Clustered Edge Computing using Stream processing techniques to enable dynamic in-memory computation close to the data source. By spreading the workload among a cluster of collocated edge devices to process data in parallel, the proposed approach aims to improve performance, thereby supporting agile data management. The experimental results confirm that such a distributed in-memory approach to data processing at the very edge of an IoT network can outperform currently adopted Cloud-enabled architectures, and has the potential to address a wide range of IoT-related data-intensive time-critical scenarios. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The internet of things will result in a large number of cheap, inaccurate and unreliable sensors that are redundant since they sense the same real-world phenomenon. We propose an approach for harnessing this redundancy based on the concept of so-called abstract sensors. This can counteract the shortcomings of the sensors and allows us to adapt between different levels of accuracy, reliability and energy consumption as needed at runtime. We briefly discuss our approach and how it achieves these properties.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have received a lot of attentions from both academic and industrial communities due to the wide range of applications they can provide. In this sort of network, maximizing the lifetime of sensor nodes as well as providing valid data in real-time are essential issues due to the real-time requirement of data and the resource limitation of sensor nodes. The distributed database approach has proven to be an effective approach to manage the large amount of sensed data in an energy-efficient manner and to reduce the response time of data processing. This work proposes a new query processing algorithm, which relies on a combination of a distributed database architecture with statistical techniques for improving the data processing in WSNs. The proposed query processing algorithm and the architecture were evaluated based on the temperature measures of an environment as a case study.
