A new online secondary path modelling for feedforward ANC systems

Adaptive filter-based feedforward active noise control (ANC) systems are generally realised in system identification configuration. The secondary path of such ANC systems contains numerous subsystems, whose transfer function needs to be compensated for the ANC systems to work satisfactorily. Different methods are available for online modelling of secondary path and realising ANC system using fxlms algorithm. Simulation of a few such kinds of existing systems is done using white Gaussian noise (WGN) as primary noise and comparing their performances. A new ANC system with online secondary path modelling is proposed and analysed. Simulation study revealed that the proposed ANC system shows superior performance compared to the existing systems in terms of average power reduction of residual noise and converging time when WGN as primary signal. © 2013, © Taylor & Francis.

This paper concerns about the theoretical stability of the adaptation process performed by the Filtered-x Least Mean Square (fxlms) algorithm in active control of acoustic noise. A dynamic model for the Variance of Residual Acoustic Noise (VRAN) is developed and it is shown that the stability of this model is a sufficient condition for the stability of the adaptation process. The basic rules governing the VRAN root locus are developed, based on which an upper-bound for the adaptation step-size is derived. This upper-bound can apply to a general case with an arbitrary secondary path, unlike the traditional upper-bound used in adaptive filter theory, which was derived only for pure delay secondary paths.

Virtual Secondary Path algorithm for Multichannel Active Control of Vehicle Powertrain Noise

An enhanced multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm using improved virtual secondary path is proposed as the basis for an active noise control (ANC) system for treating vehicle powertrain noise. This new algorithm is developed to overcome the limitation caused by the frequency-dependent property of the standard fxlms algorithm and to reduce the variation of convergence speed inherent in multiple-channel cases, in order to improve the overall performance of the control system. In this study, the convergence property of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in the frequency domain in order to yield a better understanding of the physical meaning of the virtual secondary path. In practice, because of the arrangement and sensitivities of the actuators (speakers), transducers (microphones), and physical environment, the magnitude response of the main secondary paths can be very different from each other. This difference will cause difficulty in the overall convergence of the algorithm, which will result in minimal attenuation at some of the channels. The proposed channel equalized (CE) virtual secondary path algorithm is designed to tackle this difficulty by equalizing the mean magnitude level of the main secondary paths and by adjusting other secondary paths correspondingly to keep the coupling effects among the control channels unchanged. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated by analyzing a two-input two-output active powertrain noise control system.

A robust evolutionary feedforward active noise control system using Wilcoxon norm and particle swarm optimization algorithm

The conventional filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm commonly employed for active noise control (ANC) is sensitive to disturbances acquired by the error microphone and yields poor performance in such scenario. To circumvent this problem, in this paper, a Wilcoxon fxlms (Wfxlms) algorithm is proposed and used in the design of an efficient ANC which is robust to outliers in the secondary path and immune to burst noise acquired by the error microphone. It is demonstrated through simulation study that under such situation the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional fxlms algorithm. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based robust ANC system, which does not require the modeling of the secondary path is also derived in the paper. Improved performance of the robust evolutionary ANC system over L2 norm based evolutionary ANC system is also shown. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Adaptive filtering with bandwidth constraints in the feedback path

This paper introduces a new, adaptive-filter-based controller that shows advantageous properties from the viewpoint of its communication requirement. The algorithm is called signed-error filtered-x LMS (SE-fxlms). Its novelty is characterized by the fact that it makes possible data compression in the feedback path of adaptive-filter-based control loops in a very simple way. This feature is especially useful in such closed-loop systems where the feedback signals are transmitted over a low-bandwidth communication channel. This is a typical case in so-called networked control systems (NCS), where the communication is carried out over a shared communication channel, e.g., using a wireless sensor network. We theoretically obtain the learning curves of the fxlms algorithm on the basis of statistical mechanical analysis. Cosines of angles between the coefficient vectors of an adaptive filter, its shifted filters, and an unknown system are treated as macroscopic variables. Assuming that the tapped-delay line is sufficiently long and exactly calculating the correlations between the past tap input vectors and the coefficient vector of the adaptive filter, we obtain simultaneous differential equations that describe the dynamical behaviors of the macroscopic variables in a deterministic form. We analytically solve the equations and show that the obtained theory quantitatively agrees with computer simulations. In the analysis, neither the independence assumption, the small step-size condition, nor the few-taps assumption is used.

This paper describes real-time implementation of a Lyapunov Energy Function based Fuzzy adaptive step size Filtered-x-LMS (fxlms) algorithm for active control of noise in a single channel duct. The proposed method uses a Lyapunov energy function of the error for step size adjustment in the Filtered-x-LMS (fxlms) algorithm. The energy function and its rate of change are taken as the principal signals to generate the step size through a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). Experimental results of the algorithm are compared with a recently proposed variable step size algorithm as well as the fixed step size fxlms algorithm. The paper also reports a new method of implementation of the FIS by generating a nonlinear mapping through a feed-forward Neural Network to reduce the computational complexity. The CPU time of this method has been compared with the other existing methods to establish the feasibility of implementation with a 10 kHz sampling.

Variable step-size based method for acoustic feedback modeling and neutralization in active noise control systems

This paper investigates the issue of the acoustic feedback during online operation of active noise control (ANC) systems. In the existing approach, two FIR filters are used for this task: adaptive for feedback path modeling (FBPM) and fixed for feedback neutralization (FBN). Previously, a simplified method is proposed where these two tasks of modeling and neutralization have been combined into one feedback path modeling and neutralization (FBPMN) adaptive filter. Here we introduce an intuition based variable step size (VSS) parameter, for LMS equation of FBPMN filter. This VSS is motivated from the fact that the error signal of FBPMN filter contains a disturbance-component that is decreasing in nature. The computer simulations are carried out for single-channel and multichannel ANC systems. It is demonstrated that the proposed method achieves better performance than the existing methods. On the convergence of real-time active noise control systems

Available convergence analyses of adaptive active noise control systems apply to only theoretical cases with broad-band white noise or pure delay secondary paths. In order to investigate convergence behaviors of these systems in more practical conditions, this paper conducts a new convergence analysis for filtered-x LMS-based active noise control systems with band-limited white noise and moving average secondary paths. A linear model for the adaptation process is developed. Based on this model, the upper-bound of the adaptation step-size is derived. Also, the adaptation step-size leading to the fastest convergence rate is derived. In addition to the computer simulation, a fully implemented real time active noise control system is used to verify the validity of the analytical results. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
