Bilinear Double-Order Filter Designs and Application Examples

A novel kind of non-integer order bilinear filters, named double-order bilinear filters, is introduced in this work. They are based on the employment of two non-integer orders, offering the maximum design flexibility in comparison with their fractional-order and power-law counterparts. An attractive offered benefit is that this is achieved without increasing the circuit complexity, since the proposed structure is capable of realizing all non-integer kinds of filters. Two design examples are provided, where it is shown that lead/lag compensators utilized in control applications and low/high shelving filters employed in acoustic applications are actually bilinear filters with suitably selected pole/zero frequencies. Simulation and experimental results, using the OrCAD PSpice simulator and a field programmable analog array device, respectively, support the findings of this work.

This paper presents efficient built-in-self-testing (BIST) techniques for programmable capacitor arrays (PCAs) on field programmable analog array (FPAA) platforms. The proposed BIST circuits consist of switched-capacitor (SC) integrators and analog window comparators. Taking advantage of FPAA programmable resources, the proposed PCA BIST circuits can be implemented with very small hardware overhead. Also the impact of comparator threshold variations as well as other circuit parasitic effects on the efficiency of the proposed testing method is investigated. Effective circuit techniques along with new comparator designs are presented to minimize the adverse effect of comparator threshold variations. Finally, procedures for using the proposed BIST method to systematically test all PCAs on an FPAA platform are described and experimental results are presented.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one of the useful tools in the fields of nanoscale measurement and manipulation. High speed scanning is one of the crucial requirements for live cell imaging and soft matter characterization. The scanning speed is limited by the bandwidth of the AFM's detection and actuation components. Generally, the bandwidth of a traditional scanner is too low to conduct the live cell imaging. This paper presents a simple and integrated compact home-made AFM for high speed imaging. To improve the bandwidth of the scanner, a parallel kinematics mechanism driven by piezoelectric actuators (PZTs) is proposed for the fast positioning in the X, Y and Z directions. The mechanical design optimization, modeling and analysis, and experimental testing have been conducted to validate the performance of the proposed scanner. A number of experimental results showed that the developed scanner has the capability for broad bandwidth with low coupling errors in the actuation directions. A hybrid control strategy including feedforward and feedback loops has been designed to significantly improve the dynamic tracking performance of the scanner and a field programmable analog array (FPAA) system is utilized to implement the control algorithm for excellent and stable tracking capability. Further, a number of high speed measurements have been conducted to verify the performance of the developed AFM. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new dual entropy core true random number generator

The entropy produced by a conventional single chaotic map based true random number generator (TRNG) is usually limited due to the finite number of Lyapunov exponents. In this work, we present a new dual entropy core TRNG architecture which is capable of producing high levels of randomness using hardware redundancy. Mathematical models of conventional and proposed TRNG architectures have been developed for a comparative analysis of the statistical and randomness properties. Our theoretical studies showed that the proposed architecture which employs Bernoulli map as the entropy source, has an inherently symmetric probability density function with zero mean. Using a practical information metric, T-entropy, we demonstrated that the proposed architecture performs better in terms of randomness, for a wide range of control parameter values when compared to its single entropy core counterpart. A proof of concept prototype of the proposed architecture is designed and implemented using a field programmable analog array integrated circuit. Random numbers acquired from the prototype have successfully passed all NIST 800.22 statistical tests.

In addition to exhibiting a rich variety of bifurcation and chaos via tuning parameters, a chaotic system introduced by Sprott can be modeled and realized with a fixed Main system block and many different changeable nonlinear function, blocks such as piecewise-linear function, cubic function and other trigonometric functions. This system is very suitable for implementing a programmable chaos generator according to its changeable nonlinearity. This paper presents a FPAA (field programmable analog array)-based programmable implementation of this system. Nonlinear function blocks used in this chaotic system are modeled with FPAA programming and a model is rapidly changed for realizing other nonlinear functions.

A novel fully differential digitally programmable current conveyor (DPCCII) is presented in this paper. The programmability of the proposed DPCCII is achieved using three-bit MOS R-2R ladder current division network. The DPCCII is used to realize a field programmable analog array (FPAA). The FPAA consists of seven configurable analog blocks arranged in a hexagonal form. The FPAA power consumption is 72.3mW from 1V voltage supply. A second-order programmable universal filter is realized using the proposed FPAA as an application. All the circuits are realized and simulated using 90nm IBM CMOS technology model under balanced supply voltage of +/- 0.5V. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The numerical simulations and hardware realizations of the structures, which are inspired by central pattern generator networks and characterized as biologically inspired systems, draw attention. Numerical simulations of these structures are important in examining the characteristics of these systems. However, the studies about the hardware realizations of the central pattern generator structures also appear as an alternative research area for the applications where real-time electrical signals are required. In this study, after the examination of the central pattern generator network, which are proposed for the swimming movement control of the lamprey, the hardware implementation of the motor neuron identification in this network structure is performed. The field programmable analog array (FPAA) element is used in the implementation process and the FPAA device draws attention with its low hardware cost, rapid prototyping and reconfiguration features.

A novel programmable analog array of fractional-order filters is proposed in this paper. It is constructed from an active core which is implemented using Current Feedback Operational Amplifiers as active elements. The scheme offers the realization of lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and bandstop fractional-order filter functions of various orders, and this is achieved through the utilization of resistor and capacitor banks as well as a 4-to-16 decoder. The behavior of the proposed array has been evaluated using the OrCad PSpice simulator, while the AD844 discrete-component ICs have been employed as Current Feedback Operational Amplifiers.

Security robot has become one of the most important research topics over the past decades. A number of robots have been designed to safeguard human life and wealth. This paper focuses on design and implementation of mobile robot with three subsystems: The obstacle avoidance, face recognition and detection leakage of combustible gases. In the first subsystem, an implementation of artificial neural network on field programmable analog array has been used to control the motion of the robot. A combination of principle component analysis and linear discriminate analysis feature extraction algorithms with support vector machine classifier is used in the second schema. The third subsystem uses MQ4 sensor with addition circuit to detect the leakage of combustible gases. Finally, the MATLAB environment is used to implement the proposed subsystems and the experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of these subsystems.

Latest trends in communication and consumer electronics target the development of fully adaptive systems on mixed signal systems-on-chip. This paper proposes an evolutionary approach to adaptive filter design. The hardware support of the evolutionary design algorithm is a field programmable analog array (FPAA). The FPAA has been implemented with OTA-C techniques. The synthesis algorithm has been developed considering the particularities of the proposed FPAA and of the supported filter structures. Topological reconfiguration is performed with a lookup table, parametric design is performed with evolutionary computation methods and wide-band self-calibration is achieved by means of a phase locked loop. The filter sizing algorithm is suitable for both intrinsic or extrinsic evolution and has the potential to be hard-wired in dedicated digital circuitry. Extensive transistor level simulations performed on the evolved adaptive filters prove the functionality of the proposed software and the underlying circuitry.
