An interval-fuzzy two-stage stochastic programming model for planning carbon dioxide trading under uncertainty

In this study, an IFTSP (interval-fuzzy two-stage stochastic programming) method is developed for planning carbon dioxide (CO2) emission trading under uncertainty. The developed IFTSP incorporates techniques of interval fuzzy linear programming and two-stage stochastic programming within a general optimization framework, which can effectively tackle uncertainties described in terms of probability density functions, fuzzy membership functions and discrete intervals. The IFTSP cannot only tackle uncertainties expressed as probabilistic distributions and discrete intervals, but also provide an effective linkage between the pre-regulated CO2 mitigation policies and the associated economic implications. The developed model is applied to a case study of CO2-emission trading planning of industry systems under uncertainty, where three trading schemes are considered based on different trading participants. The results indicate that reasonable solutions have been generated. They are help for supporting: (a) formulation of desired GHG (greenhouse gas) mitigation policies under various economic and system-reliability constraints, (b) selection of the desired CO2-emission trading pattern, and (c) in-depth analysis of tradeoffs among system benefit, satisfaction degree, and CO2 mitigation under multiple uncertainties. fuzzy constrained optimization of eco-friendly reservoir operation using self-adaptive genetic algorithm: a case study of a cascade reservoir system in the Yalong River, China

With the increasing demands for hydropower development in China, it is particularly important to implement eco-friendly reservoir operation in consideration of the vulnerability of downstream aquatic environment. In this paper, a fuzzy constrained nonlinear programming model is presented. fuzzy programming is used to deal with the inherent imprecision and vagueness in constraints, and a self-adaptive genetic algorithm with simulated binary crossover is proposed for searching for the optimal reservoir operating rules. First, the fuzzy reservoir operation model is transformed into two deterministic sub-models. Self-adaptive genetic algorithm is then used to generate optimal solutions by applying penalty functions to integrate constraints into the objective function to form the fitness function. To achieve a final compromise between the fuzzy objective and the constraints, a max-min decision principle is incorporated into the optimization process to obtain satisfactory operating schemes. The methodology is demonstrated through a cascade system of reservoirs in the Yalong River, southwest China. A monthly reservoir operation model, which considered downstream ecological flow requirements as fuzzy constraints, is developed to optimize eco-friendly reservoir operation with the objective of maximizing total hydropower generation. Monthly operating rules are generated for two cascade reservoirs, and the optimal hydropower generation is also obtained. Results indicate that the proposed approach can effectively improve the operation of the cascade reservoir system and fulfill the flow requirements of the downstream ecosystem that are expressed as fuzzy sets. It is a useful tool for generating optimal strategy to achieve an eco-friendly reservoir operation under uncertainty. Copyright (c) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A maintenance system is necessary to maintain an efficient production system and reduce the possibility of work being suspended due to machine breakdown. For every manufacturing company the objective is to produce goods at a profit and this is only achieved using an effective maintenance system. Maintenance is required for all types of machinery. The copying machine is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. In this paper, the maintenance of copying machines is focused on. For this purpose, a multi-objective nonlinear programming model with uncertainty is introduced. Data in many real life engineering and economic problems suffers from inexactness. And uncertainty also exists. In order to deal with uncertain optimization problems, fuzzy and stochastic approaches are commonly used to describe these imprecise characteristics. Here three different approaches to uncertainty are compare;the fuzzy programming approach, the interval number programming approach and the stochastic programming approach. A numerical example is introduced to clarify the proposed method.

A supply chain may be considered as a group of organizations, connected by a series of trading relationships. This group covers the logistics and manufacturing activities from raw materials to the final consumer. Each organization in the chain procures and then transforms materials into intermediate/final products, and distributes these to customers. Thus, the supply chain is a network linking and interweaving different supply chains of all the companies involved in a production process. The content of supply chain management with in a firm varies considerably with the type of business. Procurement and distribution of products of any business are the two vital functions. In this paper, an attempt to integrate these two functions is done. It incorporates quantity discounts and freight policies for multi items that are perishable in nature, which are supplied from single source to single destinations under fuzzy environment. It is assumed that, single source or a supplier is offering various discounts on the purchase of quantity and are supplying to a destination. A transporter hired by the buyer also offers different policies to choose on distribution of products, thereby buyer is enticed by dual benefit on procurement as well as distribution. A fuzzy optimization problem is converted to crisp mathematical programming problem using triangular membership function. The problem is solved and a case is presented to validate the model.

Weighted additive models are well known for dealing with multiple criteria decision making problems. fuzzy goal programming is a branch of multiple criteria decision making which has been applied to solve real life problems. Several weighted additive models are introduced to handle fuzzy goal programming problems. These models are based on two approaches in fuzzy goal programming namely goal programming and fuzzy programming techniques. However, some of these models are not able to solve all kinds of fuzzy goal programming problems and some of them that appear in current literature suffer from a lack of precision in their formulations. This paper focuses on weighed additive models for fuzzy goal programming. It explains the oversights within some of them and proposes the necessary corrections. A new improved weighted additive model for solving fuzzy goal programming problems is introduced. The relationships between the new model and some of the existing models are discussed and proved. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the validity and strengths of the new model.

Procurement and distribution strategies play a central role in the field of supply chain management. In this paper, an attempt is made to integrate these two functions. It incorporates quantity discounts and freight policies for multi items that are perishable in nature, which are supplied from single source to multiple destinations under fuzzy environment. It is assumed that, there is finite planning horizon on which demand and total costs are fuzzy in nature. A fuzzy optimization problem is converted to crisp mathematical programming problem using triangular membership function. The problem is solved and a case is presented to validate the model.

Planning water resources management systems using a fuzzy-boundary interval-stochastic programming method

In this study, a fuzzy-boundary interval-stochastic programming (FBISP) method is developed for planning water resources management systems under uncertainty. The developed FBISP method can deal with uncertainties expressed as probability distributions and fuzzy-boundary intervals. With the aid of an interactive algorithm woven with a vertex analysis, solutions for FBISP model under associated alpha-cut levels can be generated by solving a set of deterministic submodels. The related probability and possibility information can also be reflected in the solutions for the objective function value and decision variables. The developed FBISP is also applied to water resources management and planning within a multi-reservoir system. Various policy scenarios that are associated with different levels of economic consequences when the pre-regulated water-allocation targets are violated are analyzed. The results obtained are useful for generating a range of decision alternatives under various system conditions, and thus helping decision makers to identify desired water resources management policies under uncertainty.(C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
