Overview and Goals Data arriving in time order (a data stream) arises in fields ranging from physics to finance to medicine to music, just to name a few. Often the data comes from sensors (in physics and medicine for example) whose data rates continue to improve dramati cally as sensor technology improves. Further, the number of sensors is increasing, so correlating data between sensors becomes ever more critical in orderto distill knowl edge from the data. On-line response is desirable in many applications (e.g., to aim a telescope at a burst of activity in a galaxy or to perform magnetic resonance-based real-time surgery). These factors - data size, bursts, correlation, and fast response motivate this book. Our goal is to help you design fast, scalable algorithms for the analysis of single or multiple time series. Not only will you find useful techniques and systems built from simple primi tives, but creative readers will find many other applications of these primitives and may see how to create new ones of their own. Our goal, then, is to help research mathematicians and computer scientists find new algorithms and to help working scientists and financial mathematicians design better, faster software.

A dynamic module is a special kind of machine code library that can be loaded at run-time like MuPAD library packages. Dynamic modules allow users to integrate simple C/C++ functions as well as complete software packages into MuPAD and to use them as regular MuPAD functions. They give users direct access to internal methods and data structures of MuPAD and allow it to be extended with almost any desired feature. Programming and creating dynamic modules is facilitated by the MuPAD Application Programming Interface MAPI and a special generator.;This book is addressed to users and developers of dynamic modules in MuPAD.;The accompanying CD-ROM includes a hypertext version of the manual and a trial version of MuPAD 1.4.1 for Linux and Solaris 2.5.

This book covers points in a 3D Cartesian coordinate system, and then discusses vectors and the details of dot and cross products. Basic mathematical foundations are illustrated through Unity-based example implementations. Also provided are examples showing how the concepts are applied when implementing video game functionality, such as collision support, motion simulations, autonomous behaviors, shadow approximations, and reflection off arbitrary walls.;Beginners, and those interested in the implementation of interactive games, who need a basic mathematical background or a refresher with modern examples

This volume contains revised versions of the papers submitted to the workshop by the participants and accepted by the program committee after a thorough reviewing process. The collection of papers included in the proceedings covers not only various expanding applications of computer algebra to scienti?c computing but also the computer algebra systems themselves and the CA algorithms. The eight earlier CASC conferences, CASC 1998, CASC 1999, CASC 2000, CASC 2001, CASC 2002, CASC 2003, CASC 2004, and CASC 2005 were held, - spectively, in St. Petersburg, Russia, in Munich, Germany, in Samarkand, Uzb- istan, in Konstanz, Germany, in Crimea, Ukraine, in Passau, Germany, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Kalamata, Greece, and they proved to be successful. It was E. A. Grebenikow (Computing Center of the Russian Academy of S- ences, Moscow) who drew our attention to the group of mathematicians and c- puter scientists at the Academy of sciences of Moldova conducting research in the ?eld of computer algebra. We were impressed that this group not only is concerned with applications of CA methods to problems of scienti?c computing but also c- ries out research on the fundamental principles underlying the current computer algebra systems themselves, see also their papers in the present proceedings v- ume. It was therefore decided to organize the 9th workshop on computer Algebra in Scienti?c Computing, CASC 2006, in Chi¸ sin? au, the capital of Moldova.

Abstract In this chapter we provide an overview of probabilistic logic networks (PLN), including our motivations for developing PLN and the guiding principles underlying PLN. We discuss foundational choices we made, introduce PLN knowledge representation, and briefly introduce inference rules and truth-values. We also place PLN in context with other approaches to uncertain inference. 1.1 Motivations This book presents Probabilistic Logic Networks (PLN), a systematic and pragmatic framework for computationally carrying out uncertain reasoning – r- soning about uncertain data, and/or reasoning involving uncertain conclusions. We begin with a few comments about why we believe this is such an interesting and important domain of investigation. First of all, we hold to a philosophical perspective in which “reasoning” – properly understood – plays a central role in cognitive activity. We realize that other perspectives exist; in particular, logical reasoning is sometimes construed as a special kind of cognition that humans carry out only occasionally, as a deviation from their usual (intuitive, emotional, pragmatic, sensorimotor, etc.) modes of thought. However, we consider this alternative view to be valid only according to a very limited definition of “logic.” Construed properly, we suggest, logical reasoning may be understood as the basic framework underlying all forms of cognition, including those conventionally thought of as illogical and irrational.

The authors of this Festschrift prepared these papers to honour and express their friendship to Klaus Ritter on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Be cause of Ritter's many friends and his international reputation among math ematicians, finding contributors was easy. In fact, constraints on the size of the book required us to limit the number of papers. Klaus Ritter has done important work in a variety of areas, especially in var ious applications of linear and nonlinear optimization and also in connection with statistics and parallel computing. For the latter we have to mention Rit ter's development of transputer workstation hardware. The wide scope of his research is reflected by the breadth of the contributions in this Festschrift. After several years of scientific research in the U.S., Klaus Ritter was ap pointed as full professor at the University of Stuttgart. Since then, his name has become inextricably connected with the regularly scheduled conferences on optimization in Oberwolfach. In 1981 he became full professor of Applied mathematics and mathematical Statistics at the Technical University of Mu nich. In addition to his university teaching duties, he has made the activity of applying mathematical methods to problems of industry to be centrally important.
