This paper discusses a technique to model software patterns such as Gang-OF-Four (GOF) design patterns for supporting pattern based software development. Software patterns are general structures that frequently appear in the artifacts and encourage effective reuse of past successful experience. To support pattern based software development. we model the patterns from object-oriented view so that machine processing is possible. In our approach, we consider that a pattern consists of a pattern structure (a class diagram) and manipulation operations on the pattern structure in order to use it. These manipulations are classified into three types;pattern instantiation (applying a pattern to an actual problem, i.e. filling their hot spots), pattern combination (combining several patterns into larger one) and pattern refinement (refine a pattern into more concrete one). These manipulation operations are specific to patterns and each pattern is a class which they are encapsulated into, We have described 22 Gang-Of-Four design patterns with Java and developed a supporting tool for using patterns. The tool has been developed by using our approach itself and it shows the usefulness of our approach.

An object-oriented modeling method was proposed to develop a simulation software package named GVDS which could be used to predict some aspects of dynamic behavior of railway vehicle. The package based on multi-body dynamics mainly consists of three parts, an interactive pre-processor, the solver and an interactive post-processor. With UML, demands and structure of the software package are represented. By modeling of the geometry and behavior of each object, virtual prototype of railway vehicle is formed and by the simulation, the critical speed of hunting stability, wheel-rail contact forces and so on can be determined and the hunting stability, curving behavior and ride comfort can be analyzed and evaluated. Finally, some cases are simulated. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Several mathematical models of different physiological systems are spread through literature. They serve as tools which improve the understanding of (patho-) physiological processes, may help to meet clinical decisions and can even enhance medical therapies. These models are typically implemented in a signal-flow-oriented simulation environment and focus on the behavior of one specific subsystem. Neglecting other physiological subsystems and using a technical description of the physiology hinders the exchange with and acceptance of clinicians. By contrast, this paper presents a new model implemented in a physical, object-oriented modeling environment which includes the cardiovascular, respiratory and thermoregulatory system. Simulation results for a healthy subject at rest and at the onset of exercise are given, showing the validity of the model. Finally, simulation results showing the interaction of the cardiovascular system with a ventricular assist device in case of heart failure are presented showing the flexibility and mightiness of the model and the simulation environment. Thus, we present a new model including three important physiological systems and one medical device implemented in an innovative simulation environment.

One of the most distinguished features of object-oriented paradigm is the modeling power. It captures real-world entities with a single concept, the object, which combines both the structural aspect and the behavioral aspect of the entities. It provides primarily the concepts of encapsulation and inheritance. modeling concurrency is very crucial to achieve computational efficiency in case multiple concurrent activities in an application need to be synchronized. The conventional object-oriented modeling lacks the modeling features for concurrency in the sense that it is difficult to separate synchronization from the specification of methods. The separation allows the reusability of a class. In this paper, we propose a modeling technique through a diagrammatical representation of Petri nets, called object-Relationship Diagram, for object-oriented applications. We first describe structure model and behavior model which describe structural aspect and behavioral aspect of objects, respectively. For behavior modeling, we use the notions of generalization and aggregation to provide users with comprehensibility of the model. We then extend our model to express concurrency and synchronization features to manage concurrent access to objects.

The object-oriented modeling language Dymola allows the physical modeling of large interconnected systems based on model components from different engineering domains. It generates symbolic code for different target simulators. In this paper, a Dymola class library for the efficient generation of the equations of motion for multibody systems is presented. The library is based on a O(n) algorithm which is reformulated in an object-oriented way. This feature can also be interpreted as a bond graph oriented modeling of multibody systems. Furthermore a new algorithm for a certain class of variable structure multibody systems, such as systems with Coulomb friction, is presented, which allows the generation of efficient symbolic code.

The syntax-directed translation technique based on attribute grammar has been the most commonly used method for compiler development. However, as a design of a compiler with syntax-directed translation depends on the parsing methods, the conceptual structure of the compiler does not correspond well to the actual modules that implement its conceptual structure. As a result, the compiler may have the structure with less modularity. Moreover, as the semantics in modern high-level programming languages become more complicated, compilers are also getting complicated. The object-oriented modeling technique has been introduced to compiler development to improve the modularity of compilers. An analysis proposes a method to describe dynamic behavior of the object model for the compilers. The analysis shows that this is a feasible method for improving modularity of compilers for complex high-level programming languages.

The role of network theory and object-oriented modeling within a framework for the vulnerability analysis of critical infrastructures

A framework for the analysis of the vulnerability of critical infrastructures has been proposed by some of the authors. The framework basically consists of two successive stages: (i) a screening analysis for identifying the parts of the critical infrastructure most relevant with respect to its vulnerability and (ii) a detailed modeling of the operational dynamics of the identified parts for gaining insights on the causes and mechanisms responsible for the Vulnerability. In this paper, a critical presentation is offered of the results of a set of investigations aimed at evaluating the potentials of (i) using network analysis based on measures of topological interconnection and reliability efficiency, for the screening task;(ii) using object-oriented modeling as the simulation framework to capture the detailed dynamics of the operational scenarios involving the most vulnerable parts of the critical infrastructure as identified by the preceding network analysis. A case study based on the Swiss high-voltage transmission system is considered. The results are cross-compared and evaluated;the needs of further research are defined. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Three-dimensional object-oriented modeling of the stomach for the purpose of microprocessor-controlled functional stimulation

Three-dimensional (3-D) object-oriented models are needed for optimizing gastric electrical stimulation by performing virtual computer experiments. The aim of the study was to create a 3-D object-oriented electromechanical model of the stomach in vivo for the purpose of microprocessor controlled functional stimulation. The stomach was modeled using coaxial truncated conoids as objects. The strength of an external stimulating electric field generated by circumferentially implanted wire electrodes is related to artificial neurogenic and myogenic control of smooth muscle depolarization and contraction. Variation of the field strength modulates the frequency and concentration of acetylcholine release, as well as the transmembrane voltage of the muscle cells. Mechanical response of the stimulated tissue was quantified by two parametric functions of the electric field strength representing the relative contractile force and geometrical displacement of the gastric surface. Data from previously conducted canine experiments were used to test the validity of the model. The model was applied to simulate contractions with different positions, orientation and number of the circumferentially implanted stimulating electrodes. The model combined most of the existing theoretical and experimental findings concerning functional gastric stimulation and can be utilized as a flexible tool for virtual medical tests involving external high-frequency (50 Hz) neural stimulation.

Formalizing and integrating the dynamic model for object-oriented modeling

The object modeling Technique (OMT), a commonly used object-oriented development technique, comprises the object, dynamic, and functional models to provide three complementary views that graphically describe different aspects of systems. The lack of a well-defined semantics for the integration of the three models hinders the overall development process, particularly during the design phase. Previously, we formalized the object model in terms of algebraic specifications. However, the algebraic specifications only capture the static, structural aspects of a system. They do not explicitly describe the behavior, which is critical for system development especially for the design phase. It is necessary to formalize the dynamic model in terms of the structural descriptions in order to specify and verify the system behavior using rigorous techniques. This paper presents a well-defined formal model for both the object and dynamic models and their integration. The formal model is described in terms of a well-known specification language, LOTOS. Formalization of the graphical notation enables numerous automated processing and analysis tasks, such as behavior simulation and consistency checks between levels of specifications.

In the paper by Secchi et al, (IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, vol. 12, no. 6, pp. 696-702, Dec. 2007), the authors claim that the presented industrial application demonstrates the effectiveness of their framework for the object-oriented modeling of complex computer-controlled physical systems. They claim that the proposed language aims to increase multidisciplinary approaches to the design of logic controllers for industrial processes and mechatronic systems. In this letter, it is argued that the open issues and inconsistencies that exist in the described approach, i.e., the framework and the methodology, raise many questions about the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the existence of the framework as well as their successful application in the presented industrial application.
