As part of the optimization of electric machines, we are interested in this work to optimize the geometrical parameters of an in-wheel permanent magnet motor with an external rotor and concentrated windings. In the magnetic circuit optimization, three based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) multi-objective optimization algorithms were applied: Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimizer (OMOPSO), Speed-constrained Multi-objective PSO (SMPSO) and Dual Multi-objective PSO (DMOPSO). To achieve an optimized design, two objective functions are implemented while respecting certain constraints: (i) the first relates to increasing the machine efficiency and, (ii) the second concerns the machine weight minimization because it is directly coupled into the wheel. We have also presented the behavior of DMOPSO which can include a preference of the weight objective compared to the efficiency objective during the machine optimization.

In Malaysia, containerized freight transport has been growing and is expected to continue in that trend in the future. This research aims to provide a model for the assessment of containerized freight movement through intermodal transport network of Peninsular Malaysia. To design such a model, ArcMap software was used to build the transport network and MATLAB software was used to design the user-interface and to develop shortest path algorithm for analyzing the transport network. The focus of the analysis was to identify the optimum route and mode(s) of transport from origin to destination for different objective functions such as distance, time, emission and cost. Besides, the study explored tradeoffs associated with least-distance, least-time, least-emission and least-cost routes. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, two case studies were analyzed. The presented methodology and procedures are applicable not only on any origin-destination pair in the transport network of Malaysia, but also on any other intermodal transport networks.

This paper presents the study of a vacuum interrupter (VI) of 12kV, in terms of optimization of the electrical field in order to obtain a more uniform distribution inside the VI chamber. The proposed method consists in combining the construction and simulation programs in a Solid Works module, respectively ComsolMultiphisics, with the optimization module that includes the programming environment Matlab and NSGA-II optimization algorithm. The robustness and the feasibility of this approach is supported by results that are comparable with the data available in the specialty literature.

The pattern of water use operation is important to ensure the continuity of water supply system of a reservoir. This pattern, which is usually called power rule curve in a hydropower system, should be optimally obtained, so that the yielded electrical power also becomes optimal while the continuity of reservoir storage can also be tenable. In this study, in order to satisfy the main objective of Riam Jerawi Reservoir, where the energy of 6 MW should be provided every month, a linear optimization model is applied for three objective functions such as maximizing total energy, maximizing minimum energy and minimizing energy shortage. In addition, a simulation model is also presented for comparison purpose particularly to emphasize some disadvantages of using this model. The results show that the optimum energy can be achieved by applying this optimization model where the continuity of reservoir volume is also satisfied. Meanwhile, the simulation model produces the rule curve, which cannot satisfy the continuity criterion. This optimization model is expected to be applied for other similar cases and give the optimum power rule curve for the related stakeholders.

With the huge influx of various data nowadays, extracting knowledge from them has become an interesting but tedious task among data scientists, particularly when the data come in heterogeneous form and have missing information. Many data completion techniques had been introduced, especially in the advent of kernel methods- a way in which one can represent heterogeneous data sets into a single form: as kernel matrices. However, among the many data completion techniques available in the literature, studies about mutually completing several incomplete kernel matrices have not been given much attention yet. In this paper, we present a new method, called Mutual Kernel Matrix Completion (MKMC) algorithm, that tackles this problem of mutually inferring the missing entries of multiple kernel matrices by combining the notions of data fusion and kernel matrix completion, applied on biological data sets to be used for classification task. We first introduced an objective function that will be minimized by exploiting the EM algorithm, which in turn results to an estimate of the missing entries of the kernel matrices involved. The completed kernel matrices are then combined to produce a model matrix that can be used to further improve the obtained estimates. An interesting result of our study is that the E-step and the M-step are given in closed form, which makes our algorithm efficient in terms of time and memory. After completion, the (completed) kernel matrices are then used to train an SVM classifier to test how well the relationships among the entries are preserved. Our empirical results show that the proposed algorithm bested the traditional completion techniques in preserving the relationships among the data points, and in accurately recovering the missing kernel matrix entries. By far, MKMC offers a promising solution to the problem of mutual estimation of a number of relevant incomplete kernel matrices. Copyright © 2017 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm

This study considers China's new electricity reform and related policies as a prerequisite, makes depth analysis of the power generation and sales companies bidding model, and puts forward the game strategy of single sales company and multiple power producers that considered network constraints based on the principle of dark auction in game theory. Considering the problem of transmission obstruction, a two-layer optimisation model is established. The lower level makes the maximum profit of the generator as the objective function, using the probability function to describe the quotation behaviour of the competitors, using the average match method to solve the bidder's bid. According to the underlying information, the upper single sales company uses linear programming methods to give low-cost unit queuing priority, combined with grid operating constraints to calculate the minimum purchase cost. Through the upper and lower models, interactive solution can improve the transaction success rate and reduce the occurrence of transmission congestion. Finally, the modified IEEE14 node example is used to analyse and verify. © 2017 Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.

Based on concepts of structural modal flexibility and modal assurance criterion (MAC), a new objective function is defined and studied for constrained optimization problems (COP) on structural damage detection (SDD) in this paper. Compared with traditionally objective function, which is defined based on natural frequencies and MAC, effect of objective functions on robustness of SDD calculation is evaluated through numerical simulation of a 2-storey rigid frame. Structural damages are identified by solving the COP on SDD based on an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm. Weak and multiple damage scenarios are mainly considered in various noise conditions. Some illustrated results show that the newly defined objective function is better than the traditional ones. It can be used to identify the damage locations but also to quantify the severity of weak and multiple damages in measurement noise conditions.

A new type of axial flux interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (AFIPMSM) is introduced in the study, and then multi-object optimisation design about electromagnetic power and efficiency is fulfilled. First of all, a new type of AFIPMSM is designed by adding main pole, leakage pole and flux barrier. Equivalent magnetic circuit model is established. Magnetic reluctances and flux corresponding to the different magnetic circuit branches are calculated. Finally, a multi-criteria optimisation process is applied to determine a design optimum. The design multi-object function introduced in this study is to maximise the output power and to maximise efficiency. A single variable considered in calculating the objective functions is the ratio of outer-to-inner diameter. In order to satisfy the specific application requirements, weight coefficient is adopted to reflect the contribution of the different objective function to total objective function.

Fast and accurate synthesis of electronically reconfigurable annular ring monopole antennas using particle swarm optimisation and artificial bee colony algorithms

The synthesis of a simple electronically reconfigurable annular ring monopole antenna using a designing optimisation process based on particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms is proposed. Several antenna dimensions are selected as objective functions of PSO and ABC and their best solutions are considered as the optimised dimensions of the antenna geometry. Two radio-frequency p-i-n diodes, connecting the antenna feeding line to two microstrip stubs are used to change the antenna frequency response from ultra-wideband (UWB), from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, to narrowband (NB) operation about 5.8 GHz. The antenna design and simulation are performed using Ansoft high-frequency structure simulator software. PSO and ABC algorithms are written in Java language. Thereafter, antenna prototypes are fabricated and measured for validation purposes. Simulation and measurement results are obtained showing good agreement. The measured optimised impedance bandwidths of the UWB and NB bands are up to 128 and 23%, respectively. Additionally, simulated and measured radiation patterns are very similar when the reconfigurable antenna is operating in OFF-state (UWB sensing antenna) and in ON-state (NB transmitting antenna) modes, indicating the proposed antenna geometry as a promising candidate for applications such as UWB and cognitive radio.
