Background Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is considered a gold-standard, evidence-based and cost-effective approach to improve cognitive function and quality of life of people with mild to moderate dementia. Aims To validate CST for the Portuguese population and test its effectiveness. Methods A single-blind, multi-center, randomized controlled trial recruited 112 older people with dementia. The primary outcome measure was cognition and secondary measures were quality of life, communication, autonomy, anxiety, depression, and global functioning. We also explored whether CST benefits people differently according to context, gender and level of cognitive reserve. Results Fifty-five people were randomized to the intervention and 57 to the control group. In the post-test, the intervention group significantly improved relative to controls in cognition (ADAS-Cog, p = 0.013), communication (HCS, p = 0.045), behaviour (CAPE-BRS, p = 0.017) and in global dementia rating (CDR, p = 0.008). Quality of life, depression and anxiety had no significant differences. The estimated number needed to treat was four for one to benefit a cognitive improvement (ADAS-Cog). Conclusions Group CST is valid for the Portuguese population with benefits for people with mild to moderate dementia.

LLM-based code generation and system migration in language-driven engineering

This paper illustrates the power of extending Language Driven Engineering (LDE) with Domain-Specific Natural Languages (DSNLs) through a case study on two levels. Both cases benefit from the characteristic decomposition feature of LDE, resulting in tasks tailored to the application of domain-specific languages, here with a focus on the application of DSNLs supported by LLM-based code generation. In the first case study, we show how DSNL-supported LDE facilitates the development of point-and-click adventures, whereas the second case study focuses on migration: We demonstrate how the entire LDE scenario for point-and-click adventure games can be migrated to output TypeScript instead of JavaScript using LLM-based code generation exclusively, without manually writing any code. This migration not only infers the required types, but also preserves an important property of the original LDE scenario: generated web applications can be automatically validated by design via automata learning and subsequent model checking. Even better, this property can be exploited to automatically validate the correctness of the migration by learning so-called difference automata that characterize the behavioral differences between the generated JavaScript-based and Type-Script-based applications.

Teaching critical infrastructure protection and resilience using exercises and WebEOC: An examination of UAE undergraduate students' after-action reports

Resilience for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was part of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation's founder, vision for the UAE when it was formed in 1971. Consequently, national, and local (Emirate) level governments adopt established standards and regulations and work with institutions that integrate robust training, testing, and exercises, to enhance their response capabilities in protecting Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKR). Rabdan Academy (RA) is an academic institution established in 2015 to train the next generation of Emiratis in safety, security, defense, emergency, and crisis management (SSDEC) disciplines. Most RA students are employed and sponsored by local and national level agencies that contribute to Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience (CIPR) efforts in the UAE. This paper aims at providing the reader with a brief overview of UAE's CIPR policies and efforts, followed by an examination of how RA faculty have integrated the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation program (HSEEP) methods and CIPR concepts into various undergraduate level courses to enhance practical learning. Specifically, it details the creation and implementation of a simulated operational exercise using WebEOC a crisis management software (CMS). It demonstrates the advantages and limitations for student learning through role-playing in a virtual emergency operations center (EOC) exercise. Sixty-five after action reports (AARs) submitted by students are examined and highlight that most of the students felt the scenario(s), the injects, and the WebEOC platform, added realism and provided an authentic learning environment, communicating between players was easy, and this was a good preparation for their careers. Limitations included information communications technology (ICT) issues, and a sense of isolation from peers due to COVID-19 enforced distance learning. program execution can be tampered with by malicious attackers through exploiting software vulnerabilities. Changing the program behavior by compromising control data and decision data has become the most serious threat in computer system security. Although several hardware approaches have been presented to validate program execution, they either incur great hardware overhead or introduce false alarms. We propose a new hardware-based approach by leveraging the existing speculative architectures for runtime program validation. The on-chip branch target buffer (BTB) is utilized as a cache of the legitimate control flow transfers stored in a secure memory region. In addition, the BTB is extended to store the correct program path information. At each indirect branch site, the BTB is used to validate the decision history of previous conditional branches and monitor the following execution path at runtime. Implementation of this approach is transparent to the upper operating system and programs. Thus, it is applicable to legacy code. Because of good code locality of the executable programs and effectiveness of branch prediction, the frequency of control-flow validations against the secure off-chip memory is low. Our experimental results show a negligible performance penalty and small storage overhead.

This article provides a brief introduction to the set of four articles in the special issue. To provide a foundation for the issue, key terms are defined, a brief historical overview of validity is provided, and a description of several different validation approaches used in the issue are explained. Finally, the contribution of the articles to further articulating argument-based validation approaches is discussed, along with questions for the field to consider.

Validating a Mobile Learning Readiness Survey: Assessing Teachers' Dispositions Toward Adoption

Appraisal of the readiness of teachers to accept and use mobile devices for classroom instruction is a critical step whenever an expectation exists that the devices will be used to enhance student learning. Designing professional development requires assessment of teachers' readiness and willingness to embrace mobile learning for their students. This article features a validation study of a survey instrument for assessing the level of readiness of classroom teachers for teaching and learning with mobile devices. Through exploratory factor analysis of the Mobile Learning Readiness Survey (MLRS), four dimensions of readiness to teach with mobile devices were identified. These four factors are possibilities, benefits, preference, and external influences. Multidimensional scaling was then applied to the scales produced from items associated with the factors, in order to examine the associations among the constructs. Findings demonstrate that the constructs measured by the MLRS align with other established measures that would be expected to have significant associations with the newly developed MLRS scales. The instrument is demonstrated to possess desirable psychometric properties of respectable reliability, plus acceptable content, construct, and criterion-related validity, making it worthy of use in technology integration research and professional development contexts. © 2017, © 2017 ISTE |***/jdlte.

P-n junctions form the basic building blocks for any semiconductor device. Therefore, the complete understanding of the junction characteristics is very important. Although being a widely discussed topic in electronics, there are still some gaps such as finding the value and significance of the junction ideality factor, that needs to be addressed. In this article we have discussed the problems faced while extracting the ideality factor from the I-V characteristics of a p-n LED and its significance in device performance. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Development and validation of a Multicultural Consciousness Instrument

Developing multiculturally competent citizens is at the forefront of the espoused mission of higher education. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a self-report instrument to measure traditional-age (18-to 24-year-old) college students' multicultural consciousness (e.g., awareness of self, knowledge of difference, and interpersonal disposition). Results validate the construct of multicultural consciousness and the instrument using confirmatory factor analysis.

As nations have sought to keep pace with rapid technological innovation, governments have renewed their focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with emphasis on developing both technical and non-technical skills in STEM students. This article examines which engineering-relevant skills may be developed by participation in cocurricular activities by creating a literature-based framework of skills and attributes developed through categories of undergraduate involvement. The authors then validate this framework using two methods.
