software processes, together with software quality assurance, focus on ensuring and attesting that the engineering processes result in the appropriate software quality. Complex processes and regulations (e.g., in safety-critical systems), time pressure, or coordination needs, often cause engineers to deviate from prescribed processes, producing a cascade of inconsistencies whose repair is typically troublesome. Accordingly, guidance is needed to help engineers to fix the inconsistencies and understand the implications of postponing inconsistency resolution until engineers reach a consensual agreement of the most convenient repair. To this end, we bring together techniques and methods from process engineering, model inconsistency checking, and formal methods. Preliminary evaluations with real industry data have demonstrated the ability of our early prototype to track process inconsistencies across time and the potential for automated repair.

Model for Quantitative Estimation of Functionality Influence on the Final Value of a software Product

The gap between software development requirements and available resources of software developers continues to widen. This requires changes in the development and organization of software development. This study introduced a quantitative software development management methodology that estimates the relative importance and risk of functionality retention or abundance, which determines the final value of the software product. The final value of a software product is interpreted as a function of its requirements and functionalities, represented as a computational graph (called a software product graph). The software product graph allows the relative importance of functionalities to be estimated by calculating the corresponding partial derivatives of the value function. The risk of not implementing functionality was estimated by reducing the product's final value. This model was applied to two EU projects, CareHD and vINCI. In vINCI, functionalities with the most significant added value to the application are developed based on the implemented model, and those related to the least value are abandoned. Optimization was not implemented in the CareHD project, and proceeded as initially designed. Consequently, only 71% of the CareHD potential value was achieved. The proposed model enables rational management and organization of software product development with real-time quantitative evaluation of functionalities impacts and, assessment of the risks of omitting them without a significant impact. Quantitative evaluation of the impacts and risks of retention or abundance is possible based on the proposed algorithm, which is the core of the model. This model is a tool for the rational organization and development of software products.

Capabilities and Practices in DevOps: A Multivocal Literature Review

Context. To meet the demands of customers and market, Information Technology (IT) organizations are seeking to implement DevOps. While many succeed in DevOps adoption, others lack the knowledge on how to incorporate DevOps culture, process, measurements, and techniques in their business. Thus, successful adoption is still inconsistent, highlighting the need to provide management with relevant information to support the development of DevOps Capabilities effectively. But what are these Capabilities? Unfortunately, there is still a lack of clarity about DevOps Capabilities and their relationships to DevOps Practices and Outcomes among researchers and practitioners. Objective. This research aims to gather community consensus on the relationship between Capabilities and Practices, so a better DevOps implementation can be mapped. Seeking to define DevOps Capabilities and Practices concepts and to identify, organize and summarize Capabilities as they relate to Practices. Method. A Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) is conducted, with 93 documents gathered and thoroughly examined from throughout the community, including books, scientific articles, white papers, and conferences, among others. Results. This survey contributes a list of 37 organized Capabilities, their mentions in literature, and their definitions. The concepts of Practices and Capabilities were mapped and categorized in an ordered taxonomy. It is concluded that industry research has much outweighed scientific research on this topic, with Capabilities evolving dynamically over time, reinforcing team collaboration and communication as the most crucial one. The study's Outcomes will assist researchers and practitioners understand how Capabilities and Practices are related at different levels and how to better implement them.

ProCon: An automated process-centric quality constraints checking framework

When dealing with safety-critical systems, various regulations, standards, and guidelines stipulate stringent requirements for certification and traceability of artifacts, but typically lack details with regards to the corresponding software engineering process. Given the industrial practice of only using semi-formal notations for describing engineering processes - with the lack of proper tool mapping - engineers and developers need to invest a significant amount of time and effort to ensure that all steps mandated by quality assurance are followed. The sheer size and complexity of systems and regulations make manual, timely feedback from Quality Assurance (QA) engineers infeasible. In order to address these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel framework for tracking, and "passively"executing processes in the background, automatically checking QA constraints depending on process progress, and informing the developer of unfulfilled QA constraints. We evaluate our approach by applying it to three case studies: a safety-critical open-source community system, a safety-critical system in the air-traffic control domain, and a non-safety-critical, web-based system. Results from our analysis confirm that trace links are often corrected or completed after the work step has been considered finished, and the engineer has already moved on to another step. Thus, support for timely and automated constraint checking has significant potential to reduce rework as the engineer receives continuous feedback already during their work step.(c) 2023 The Author(s). The Agile software Development movement emerged from practice just like most of the works in the Agile software Development evolved through practice. Thus, the creators and consultants of the Agile world may evangelize it with commercial concerns, resulting in "selling agility" to organizations as an object in the form of packaged practices (of methods/models/frameworks). Owing to the "sold practices" of the market and misleading misconceptions in the minds of Agile creators, there are issues in Agile like regarding it as a "holy" product and everything, binary thinking, trade-offs, and determinism that do not support agility in an absolute sense and even inhibit it, which ultimately lead to the end of Agile (TM). This study handles and discusses such seven prominent misconceptions and makes a prediction about the possible course of AgileT and rise of agility.

Research as early as the 90s identified rigid, active process enactment as detrimental to engineers' flexibility. While software engineering processes thus are rarely "executable", engineers would benefit from guidance in safety critical domains where standards, regulations, and processes are often complicated. In this paper, we present the Passive process Engine Environment (P2E2) that tracks process progress in the background and automatically evaluates quality assurance constraints even in the presence of process deviations. Collaboration in research: weaving Kaupapa Maori and computer science

We describe a collaboration between Maori (Indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand) and Tauiwi (non-Maori) researchers on a software engineering project. Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) provides the basis for Maori to lead research that involves Maori as participants or intends to impact Maori outcomes. Through collaboration, an extension of the traditional four-step software design process was created, culminating in a nine-step integrated process that included Kaupapa Maori (Maori ideology) principles. The collaboration experience for both Maori and Tauiwi highlighted areas of misunderstanding within the research context based on differing worldviews and our ability to navigate and work through this. This article provides context, guiding principles, and recommended research processes where Maori and Tauiwi aim to collaborate.
