In the last few years, the need to share on the web the knowledge of Cultural Heritage (CH) through navigable 3D models has increased. This need requires the availability of web-based virtual reality systems and 3D webGIS. In order to make the information available to all stakeholders, these instruments should be powerful and at the same time very user-friendly. However, research and experiments carried out so far show that a standardized methodology doesn't exist. All this is due both to complexity and dimensions of geometric models to be published, on the one hand, and to excessive costs of hardware and software tools, on the other. In light of this background, the paper describes a methodological approach for creating 3D models of CH, freely exportable on the web, based on HTML5 and free and open source software. HTML5, supporting the webGL standard, allows the exploration of 3D spatial models using most used web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer. The methodological workflow here described has been tested for the construction of a multimedia geo-spatial platform developed for three-dimensional exploration and documentation of the ancient theatres of Segesta and of Carthage, and the surrounding landscapes. The experimental application has allowed us to explore the potential and limitations of sharing on the web of 3D CH models based on webGL standard. Sharing capabilities could be extended defining suitable geospatial web-services based on capabilities of HTML5 and webGL technology.

In this paper we present a web-based remote visualization system. The system makes use of video stream based techniques to reduce the network bandwidth requirements and is capable of performing interactive volume rendering on computed tomography data in real-time. The technique allows embedding interactive volume rendering into a website. The concrete contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we outline a Microsoft Silverlight based implementation of the prototype and describe the applied video encoding techniques. Furthermore we present experimental results that allow evaluating the system in terms of latency and image quality. In particular, we show that the additional delay of stream based remote visualization is very small if compared to picture based techniques.

With data sets growing beyond terabytes or even petabytes in scientific experiments, there is a trend of keeping data at storage facilities and providing remote cloud-based services for analysis. However, accessing these data sets remotely is cumbersome due to additional network latency and incomplete metadata description. To ease data browsing on remote data archives, our WAVE framework applies an intelligent cache management to provide scientists with a visual feedback on the large data set interactively. In this paper, we present methods to reduce the data set size while preserving visual quality. Our framework supports volume rendering and surface rendering for data inspection and analysis. Furthermore, we enable a zoom-on-demand approach, where a selected volumetric region is reloaded with higher details. Finally, we evaluated the WAVE framework using a data set from the entomology science research.

This article reiterates on the recently presented hierarchy visualization service HiViSer and its API [51]. It illustrates its decomposition into modular services for data processing and visualization of tree-structured data. The decomposition is aligned to the common structure of visualization pipelines [48] and, in this way, facilitates attribution of the services' capabilities. Suitable base resource types are proposed and their structure and relations as well as a subtyping concept for specifics in hierarchy visualization implementations are detailed. Moreover, state-of-the-art quality standards and techniques for self-documentation and discovery of components are incorporated. As a result, a blueprint for web service design, architecture, modularization, and composition is presented, targeting fundamental visualization tasks of tree-structured data, i.e., gathering, processing, rendering, and provisioning. Finally, the applicability of the service components and the API is evaluated in the context of exemplary applications.

The potential of web browsers as a platform for remote visualization has long been recognized. One of the motivations behind remote visualization has mainly been large data that cannot be easily transferred to the client. Further impeding factors for local visualization at the client side included lack of compute power or capabilities as well as lack of native support for hardware-accelerated APIs in the browser. However, moving the visualization to a remote site is challenging because of high latency and low available bandwidth affecting interactivity and visual quality. Although bandwidth is continuously improving, latency remains an issue. To obtain optimal interactivity, the rendering needs to be performed on the client machine. With the introduction of webGL, it is now possible to exploit the power of the GPU inside the browser without third-party additions. We present a GPU-based ray-casting technique for the visualization of molecular structures that adheres to the restrictions of webGL. We describe implementation details with respect to these restrictions and present the results and performance. Biomolecules with tens of thousands of atoms can be rendered at interactive rates. This shows the potential of establishing the web as an attractive platform for interactive visualization using GPU-accelerated algorithms.

Analysis of large dynamic networks is a thriving research field, typically relying on 2D graph representations. The advent of affordable head mounted displays sparked new interest in the potential of 3D visualization for immersive network analytics. Nevertheless, most solutions do not scale well with the number of nodes and edges and rely on conventional fly- or walk-through navigation. In this paper, we present a novel approach for the exploration of large dynamic graphs in virtual reality that interweaves two navigation metaphors: overview exploration and immersive detail analysis. We thereby use the potential of state-of-the-art VR headsets, coupled with a web-based 3D rendering engine that supports heterogeneous input modalities to enable ad-hoc immersive network analytics. We validate our approach through a performance evaluation and a case study with experts analyzing medical data.

This paper presents a strategy of graphical visualization of the community-based Smart and Connected Community (SCC) Health data through novel spatial and temporal plots. Temporal visualization consists of two plots: graph and flow;whereas spatial visualization can be static Google Map overlay or animation over selected timeframe. The visualization uses the disease severity (Events of Interest, EoI) through colors. An arbitrary grid is used with random area code where each grid is represented by rectangles defined by latitude and longitude of that area so that it is impossible to precisely localize the study participants. The major contribution of this work is to exhibit the continuous health status of the community through the cumulative and segmented animation on the spatial plots. To implement this, a web-based dynamic server is utilized. Front end of the server uses JavaScript JQuery and Ajax, whereas backend is managed by Hypertext Preprocessor, i.e. PHP. The phpMyAdmin (administration tool for MySQL) stores the JSON data from smartphone app. Survey result shows that 81.4% participants in pre-session and 84.75% participants in post-session provided positive feedback about the visualization. In this work, the visualization is implemented with mock data.

This paper describes an interactive web-based tool for visualizing hierarchical data including the recently developed concept of space-reclaiming icicle plots and several more traditional hierarchy visualizations. The tool provides ways to upload, share, explore, and compare hierarchical data using a multitude of different linked hierarchy visualizations. The current version supports up to 8 hierarchy visualizations, with the space-reclaiming icicle plots among them. Several of the visualizations can be shown in linked views while typical hierarchy parameters and visual variables can be changed on user demand. The interactive tool makes use of OpenGL and Angular, an industry standard JavaScript platform, and runs in a web browser. We illustrate the usefulness of the visualization tool by applying it to the NCBI taxonomy that consists of more than 300,000 hierarchically organized species while filtering for the tetrapoda subhierarchy. Finally, we explain implementation details and discuss limitations and scalability issues of the linked visualization techniques.

Gradient estimation in volume data using 4D linear regression

In this paper a new gradient estimation method is presented which is based on linear regression. Previous contextural shading techniques try to fit an approximate function to a set of surface points in the neighborhood of a given voxel. Therefore a system of linear equations has to be solved using the computationally expensive Gaussian elimination. In contrast, our method approximates the density function itself in a local neighborhood with a 3D regression hyperplane. This approach also leads to a system of linear equations but we will show that it can be solved with an efficient convolution. Our method provides at each voxel location the normal vector and the translation of the regression hyperplane which are considered as a gradient and a filtered density value respectively. Therefore this technique can be used for surface smoothing and gradient estimation at the same time.

Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) is a volume rendering technique which is used to visualize high-intensity structures within volumetric data. At each pixel the highest data value, which is encountered along a corresponding viewing ray is depicted. MIP is, for example, commonly used to extract vascular structures from medical data sets (angiography). Due to lack of depth information in MIP images, animation or interactive variation of viewing parameters is frequently used for investigation. Up to now no MIP algorithms exist which are of both interactive speed and high quality. In this paper we present a high-quality MIP algorithm (trilinear interpolation within cells), which is up to 50 times faster than brute-force MIP and at least 20 times faster than comparable optimized techniques. This speed-up is accomplished by using an alternative storage scheme for volume cells (sorted by value) and by removing cells which do not contribute to any MIP projection (regardless of the viewing direction) in a preprocessing step. Also, a fast maximum estimation within cells is used to further speed up the algorithm.
