Content is Dead ... Long Live Content: The New Age of Multimedia-Hard Problems

Using the ACM Multimedia 2012 panel on metadata as a jumping-off point, the authors investigate whether content can continue to play a dominant role in multimedia research in the age of social, local, and mobile media. In this article, they propose that the community now must face the challenge of characterizing the level of difficulty of multimedia problems to establish a better understanding of where content analysis needs further improvement. They also suggest a classification method that defines problem complexity in the context of human-assisted computation.

Ultra-low-cost colour demosaicking VLSI design for real-time video applications

A novel low-complexity and high-quality colour demosaicking algorithm is proposed for very large-scale integration (VLSI) implementation for real-time video applications. It consists of a boundary detector, a boundary mirror model and five green and red-blue colour interpolation models. Two of the five interpolation models can be selected adaptively according to boundary and position information. In addition, a boundary mirror machine and identical direction technique were used to improve the qualities of the reconstructed images. To reduce the hardware cost, memory requirement and power consumption, a hardware-sharing technique and register bank design were used to realise the proposed algorithm. The VLSI architecture of this work contains only 2.9 K gate counts and its core area is 35 966 mu m(2) synthesised by a 0.18 mu m CMOS process. The synthesised results show that this design performs an operating frequency of 100 MHz processing rate by consuming only 1.83 mW. Compared with the previous low-complexity designs, this work not only reduces at least 48.2% of gate counts and 96.7% of power consumption but also improves the average CPSNR quality by more than 0.78 dB.

Maximum-likelihood-based Doppler centroid estimation algorithm for MC-HRWS SAR system

For the multi-channel in azimuth high-resolution and wide-swath (MC-HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a novel maximum-likelihood-based Doppler centroid estimation algorithm is developed. During the estimation process, the Doppler centroid is estimated by using the maximum-likelihood approach to combine the range-frequency-variant Doppler characteristics in each channel, such as the cross-functions between neighbouring channels in the range-frequency domain. In addition, the channel mismatch in phase and along azimuth baseline position measurement error can also be estimated. Finally, the experimental results of some real squint mode MC-HRWS SAR data are utilised to validate the theoretical investigations and the proposed approach.

Dynamic Control Model Calculation: A Model Generation Architecture for Autonomous On-Orbit Assembly

Autonomous on-orbit assembly is a key technology that can enable many space applications in a more cost-effective and lower risk manner than human-assisted assembly. During an assembly sequence, an assembler robot can undergo multiple configurations as it attaches to and releases individual modules. This paper addresses how to account for the mass and stiffness property variations that occur with changes in configuration. Proper model generation for each configuration is critical to maintain control system stability and efficiency. A design, called dynamic control model calculation, is presented in this paper to address a gap where models are aggregated online based on module mass property information. This design uses module information obtained at the time of attachment to generate the model for the current configuration onboard. The design, both framework and algorithm parameterization, has been successfully implemented and validated on hardware. Hardware results show a tracking error performance improvement when the correct model of the system is used in the control system over an incorrect model. Dynamic control model calculation successfully balances a priori knowledge about the possible configurations with identification of the model onboard.

Outcomes after implementing a tailored endoscopic step-up approach to walled-off necrosis in acute pancreatitis

BackgroundThe aim of the study was to compare the outcomes of patients with pancreatic or peripancreatic walled-off necrosis by endoscopy using the conventional approach versus an algorithmic approach based on the collection size, location and stepwise response to intervention. MethodsThis was an observational before-after study of consecutive patients managed over two time intervals. In the initial period (2004-2009) symptomatic patients with walled-off necrosis underwent conventional single transmural drainage with placement of two stents and a nasocystic catheter, followed by direct endoscopic necrosectomy, if required. In the later period (2010-2013) an algorithmic approach was adopted based on size and extent of the walled-off necrosis and stepwise response to intervention. The main outcome was treatment success, defined as a reduction in walled-off necrosis size to 2cm or less on CT after 8weeks. ResultsForty-seven patients were treated in the first interval and 53 in the second. There was no difference in patient demographics, clinical or walled-off necrosis characteristics and laboratory parameters between the groups, apart from a higher proportion of women and Caucasians in the later period. The treatment success rate was higher for the algorithmic approach compared with conventional treatment (91 versus 60 per cent respectively;P<0001). On multivariable logistic regression, management based on the algorithm was the only predictor of treatment success (odds ratio 651, 95 per cent c.i. 219 to 1937;P=0001). ConclusionAn algorithmic approach to pancreatic and peripancreatic walled-off necrosis, based on the collection size, location and stepwise response to intervention, resulted in an improved rate of treatment success compared with conventional endoscopic management. Fast sensing matrix construction method oriented towards frequency-sparse signal

The sensing matrix is a crucial parameter in the recovery of frequency-sparse signals according to compressive sensing theory. Generally, it is calculated via multiplication of the measurement matrix and the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) matrix, which involves a large amount of computational work. To reduce the computational load, a fast sensing matrix construction (FSMC) method is developed. The matrices transpose rule, the symmetry property of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix, the conjugation relation between the DFT matrix and the IDFT matrix are exploited for the first time to develop this FSMC method in which the fast Fourier transform algorithm can be applied. Experiments demonstrate that the FSMC method can boost computational efficiency and contribute to a reduction in computational load without any loss of accuracy.

Time delay error is common in fast pseudodynamic (PSD) tests due to the effect of actuator dynamics. This type of systematic error introduces energy into a system which if not monitored or controlled, can result in test instability and cause the response to grow exponentially. This leads to premature termination of a simulation and unreliable results. This paper proposes an intuitive error-compensation algorithm to correct this error by considering the systematic error as negative damping in the system. The key to this scheme is the introduction of varying viscous damping at each integration time step during the PSD test. The magnitude of the time-varying viscous damping is derived by equating the magnitude of the energy error with that dissipated by the introduced damping at every integration time step. Numerical simulations and experimental validations are presented in this paper to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm, to produce reliable simulation results in the presence of systematic time delay error and noisy measurements.

Building Volumetric Appearance Models of Fabric Using Micro CT Imaging

Cloth is essential to our everyday lives;consequently, visualizing and rendering cloth has been an important area of research in graphics for decades. One important aspect contributing to the rich appearance of cloth is its complex 3D structure. Volumetric algorithms that model this 3D structure can correctly simulate the interaction of light with cloth to produce highly realistic images of cloth. But creating volumetric models of cloth is difficult: writing specialized procedures for each type of material is onerous, and requires significant programmer effort and intuition. Further, the resulting models look unrealistically "perfect" because they lack visually important features like naturally occurring irregularities. This paper proposes a new approach to acquiring volume models, based on density data from X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans and appearance data from photographs under uncontrolled illumination. To model a material, a CT scan is made, yielding a scalar density volume. This 3D data has micron resolution details about the structure of cloth but lacks all optical information. So we combine this density data with a reference photograph of the cloth sample to infer its optical properties. We show that this approach can easily produce volume appearance models with extreme detail, and at larger scales the distinctive textures and highlights of a range of very different fabrics such as satin and velvet emerge automatically-all based simply on having accurate mesoscale geometry.
