A preliminary method for coding random self-similar river networks and the corresponding distance calculations are proposed in a companion paper. The coding method is applied to generate random self-similar river networks, and the corresponding algorithm for calculating the geometric distances of the links is employed to determine the width function of the river networks, and thus evaluates the adaptability of the process. The width function-based geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph (WF-GIUH) model is then applied to estimate the runoff of the Po-bridge watershed in northern Taiwan. The results imply that the separately random self-similar generating algorithm can be used to simulate river networks during the rainfall–runoff process. It can also help analyse the variations of the river network when rainfall locations change and study the influence on hydrological responses (IUH) when the shape of river network changes.

On-chip source-synchronous serial communication has many advantages over multi-bit parallel communication in the aspects Of skew, crosstalk, area cost, wiring difficulty, and clock synchronization. However, the serial wire tends to dissipate more energy than parallel bus due to the bit multiplexing. In this paper, we propose a novel coding method to reduce the transmission energy of the serial communication by minimizing the number of transitions on the serial wire. We demonstrate the significant energy saving in a multimedia application, 3D graphics. We also apply the coding technique to a CMOS SoC implementation which integrates various processing units with packet switched on-chip networks.

The MPEG-4 fine-grained scalable video coding method for multimedia streaming over IP

Real-time streaming of audiovisual content over the Internet is emerging as an important technology area in multimedia communications. Due to the wide variation of available bandwidth over Internet sessions, there is a need for scalable video coding methods and (corresponding) flexible streaming approaches that are capable of adapting to changing network conditions in real time. In this paper, we describe a new scalable video-coding framework that has been adopted recently by the MPEG-4 video standard. This new MPEG-4 video approach, which is known as Fine-Granular-Scalability (FGS), consists,of a rich set of video coding tools that support quality (i.e., SNR), temporal, and hybrid temporal-SNR scalabilities. Moreover, one of the desired features of the MPEG-4 FGS method is its simplicity and flexibility in supporting unicast and multicast streaming applications over IP.

A fault-tolerant scheduling system is presented for data broadcasting in asymmetric communication environments for obtaining high communication efficiency for the clients of mobile computing. The coding method that plays a key role in implementing this system is analysed. It shows that significant performance improvement on the waiting time can be achieved with the system.

Parameter-estimation in the auto-binomial model using the coding- and pseudo-likelihood method approached with simulated annealing and numerical optimization

In texture analysis, the Gibbs sampler constitutes an important tool in the generation of synthetic textures. The textures are modeled as distributions with specified parameters. In this paper, we study the estimation process of the parameters in such distributions and compare Besags coding method with a pseudo-likelihood method. We also compare simulated annealing with the Newton-Raphson method to find the global maximum of a likelihood or pseudo-likelihood function. For some textures, the two methods differ but in most case there are no important differences between them. The two maximization methods find the same maximum, but the Newton-Raphson method is much faster. However, the Newton-Raphson method cannot be applied in some cases when the location of the maximum differs too much from the starting points. Here, it is often possible to find the global maximum using simulated annealing. The methods have been used in an application with newsprint. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

A heuristic method for the determination of optimum or near-optimum fixed polarity Reed-Muller (FPRM) representation of multiple output, completely specified Boolean systems is presented. The Reed-Muller (RM) tree representation forms the conceptual framework for the method, which involves manipulations of arrays of cubes. A coding method that is well adapted to RM tree representation is presented. The minimisation method takes as input a disjoint sum of cubes representation of the Boolean system. Using Karpovsky's complexity estimates as the basis for polarity selection, the method obtains the FPRM expansion by generating in one run an optimum or near optimum Reed-Muller tree representation.

Modelling the distribution of plant species using the autologistic regression model

For modeling the distribution of plant species in terms of climate covariates, we consider an autologistic regression model for spatial binary data on a regularly spaced lattice. This model belongs to the class of autologistic models introduced by Besag (1974). Three estimation methods, the coding method, maximum pseudolikelihood method and Markov chain Monte Carlo method are studied and compared via simulation and real data examples. As examples, we use the proposed methodology to model the distributions of two plant species in the state of Florida.

A low-cost biotelemetry system for long time monitoring of physiological data

A biotelemetry system based on digital data processing and transmission is implemented. The transmitter digitizes analog physiological signal, converts into serial form, forms a digital data packet by summing data and synchronization information and transmits the packets via an FM transmitter. The receiver side amplifies and pulse-shapes the received data packet, separates the data and synchronization information, converts serial data into 8-bit parallel form and then into analog signal. A special coding method provides high noise immunity and proper synchronization between transmitter and receiver. The system shows a stable and high performance within a distance of 100 m.

The VHDL hardware description language (IEEE Standard 1076) is more and more used for describing hardware systems. The syntactic and semantic richness of the language induces the need of coding rules dedicated to various objectives, such as synthesis, simulation, validation, and testability. This article presents a study carried out on the definition of coding methods and an analysis of their impact on the resulting descriptions, in terms of both debugability and testability. Debugability refers to the difficulty of pinpointing description faults in an implementation, and testability to the difficulty of generating the test stimuli for the hardware implementation. Testability is appraised before any synthesis tool has been used on the VHDL description. The study is based on experiments with three coding methods. The results demonstrated several facts. With regard to debugability, we were able to point out significant differences between the various coding methods, and we propose some rules for using these methods in order to lessen the specific drawbacks of each method. With regard to testability, we demonstrated that it is mainly related to architectural choices rather than coding choices;indeed, the considered testability evaluation is a high-level one.
