Time-critical applications, such as early warning systems or live event broadcasting, present particular challenges. They have hard limits on Quality of Service constraints that must be maintained, despite network fluctuations and varying peaks of load. Consequently, such applications must adapt elastically on-demand, and so must be capable of reconfiguring themselves, along with the underlying cloud infrastructure, to satisfy their constraints. software engineering tools and methodologies currently do not support such a paradigm. In this paper, we describe a framework that has been designed to meet these objectives, as part of the EU SWITCH project. SWITCH offers a flexible co-programming architecture that provides an abstraction layer and an underlying infrastructure environment, which can help to both specify and support the life cycle of time-critical cloud native applications. We describe the architecture, design and implementation of the SWITCH components and describe how such tools are applied to three time-critical real-world use cases. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Control software systems for manufacturing plants reveal common system architectural elements. This suggests taking advantage of a development paradigm based on reusable components. Creating and upgrading a repository of reusable components suitable for many systems that share common characteristics present a challenge for engineers, especially if composition mechanisms must be founded on control theories of discrete event systems and if formal synthesis tools must be integrated into well-accepted component-based software development processes. This paper explores a component model and a pragmatic method for the development of control software systems. The method, along with the underlying component model, fills the gap between a hierarchical control theory and component-based software engineering. A detailed case study developed around a Festo didactic learning modular production system demonstrates the relevance of the proposed approach to industrial application.

Intrusion detection aware component-based systems: A specification-based framework

component-based software engineering (CBSE) increases the reusability of software and hence decreases software development time and cost. Unfortunately, developing components for maximum reusability and acquiring third party components invite many security related concerns. The security related issues are more crucial for embedded and real-time systems. Currently, many approaches are proposed to aid the development and evaluation of secure components. However, it is well known among practitioners that, like any other software entities, components cannot be completely secure. This fact leads us to incorporate intrusion detection facilities to equip components with mechanisms to discover intrusions against components. In this paper, we present a framework for developing components with intrusion detection capabilities. This framework uses UMLintr, a UML profile for intrusion specifications. The profile allows developers to specify intrusion scenarios using UML diagrams. Specifying intrusion scenarios using the same language that is used for specifying software behavior eliminates the need for separate languages for describing intrusions. Other software specification languages can be easily adopted into this framework. The outcome of this framework are components equipped with intrusion detectors. based on UMLintr, a prototype is built and used to generate signatures for some intrusions included in the benchmark DARPA attack datasets. Furthermore, we describe an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) which uses these signatures to detect component intrusions. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Integrated model for software component selection with simultaneous consideration of implementation and verification

One important objective of component-based software engineering is the minimization of the development cost of software products. Thus, the costs of software component implementation and verification, which may involve substantial expenses while under development, should be reduced. In addition, the costs for these processes should not be considered individually, but in an integrated manner, to further reduce development cost. In the current paper, an integrated decision model is proposed to assist decision-makers in selecting reuse scenarios for components used for implementation and in simultaneously determining the optimal number of test cases for verification. An objective of the model is the minimization of development cost, while satisfying the required system and reliability requirements. The Lagrange relaxation decomposition (LRD) method with heuristics was developed to solve integrated decision problems. based on LRD, the nonlinear model is condensed into a 0-1 knapsack problem for the subproblem on reuse scenario selection and an integer knapsack problem for the subproblem on the determination of the optimal number of tests. Combined with the Lagrange multiplier-determined heuristic, the proposed algorithm can determine the global optimum solution. Simulations of varying sizes for problems and sensitivity analyses were conducted, and the results indicate that LRD is more effective than previous methods in determining global optimal solutions for the integrated decision problem. Integration of a preemptive priority based scheduler in the Palladio Workbench

This paper presents an extension to the Palladio component Model (PCM), together with a new performance analysis infrastructure that supports the fixed-priority preemptive scheduling policy. The proposed solution allows modelling and analysing component-based embedded software applications that are defined using a specific pattern in which each component is executed by a task with a specific priority. The infrastructure is also capable of analysing the system performance when the tasks access shared resources, using either immediate priority ceiling, or priority inheritance protocols, in order to avoid the priority inversion problem. The paper shows the set of rules that enable the transformation between an application, compliant with the proposed design pattern, and its corresponding PCM. Finally, a use case example based on a real system, and a set of tests that validates the analysis infrastructure, are provided. This system is the on-board software of a satellite payload that is currently being developed by the Space Research Group of the University of Alcala. This software is in charge of managing the Instrument Control Unit of the Energetic Particle Detector, which will be launched as part of the Solar Orbiter mission of the European Space Agency and United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A genetic algorithm-based approach for automated refactoring of component-based software

Context: During its lifecycle, a software system undergoes repeated modifications to quickly fulfill new requirements, but its underlying design is not properly adjusted after each update. This leads to the emergence of bad smells. Refactoring provides a de facto behavior-preserving approach to eliminate these anomalies. However, manually determining and performing useful refactorings is a formidable challenge, as stated in the literature. Therefore, framing object-oriented automated refactoring as a search-based technique has been proposed. However, the literature shows that search-based refactoring of component based software has not yet received proper attention. Objective: This paper presents a genetic algorithm-based approach for the automated refactoring of component-based software. This approach consists of detecting component-relevant bad smells and eliminating these bad smells by searching for the best sequence of refactorings using a genetic algorithm. Method: Our approach consists of four steps. The first step includes studying the literature related to component-relevant bad smells and formulating bad smell detection rules. The second step involves proposing a catalog of component-relevant refactorings. The third step consists of constructing a source code model by extracting facts from the source code of a component-based software. The final step seeks to identify the best sequence of refactorings to apply to reduce the presence of bad smells in the source code model using a genetic algorithm. The latter uses bad smell detection rules as a fitness function and the catalog of refactorings as a means to explore the search space. Results: As a case study, we conducted experiments on an unbiased set of four real-world component based applications. The results indicate that our approach is able to efficiently reduce the total number of bad smells by more than one half, which is an acceptable value compared to the recent literature. This paper presents H, a minimalistic specification language for designing heterogeneous software applications, particularly in the realms of robotics and industria, which takes advantage of a component-based software engineering (CBSE) approach. H copes with some of the most outstanding characteristics of these systems, like diversity at different levels (hardware platforms, programming languages, programmer skills), network distribution, real time and fault-tolerance. The H specification covers the life-cycle of any heterogeneous application. Its development system offers to the designer and/or builder a set of tools for specifying modules, generating code semiautomatically, debugging, maintenance, and a real time analysis of the system. Context: component-based software systems require decisions on component origins for acquiring components. A component origin is an alternative of where to get a component from. Objective: To identify factors that could influence the decision to choose among different component origins and solutions for decision-making (For example, optimization) in the literature. Method: A systematic review study of peer-reviewed literature has been conducted. Results: In total we included 24 primary studies. The component origins compared were mainly focused on in-house vs. COTS and COTS vs. OSS. We identified 11 factors affecting or influencing the decision to select a component origin. When component origins were compared, there was little evidence on the relative (either positive or negative) effect of a component origin on the factor. Most of the solutions were proposed for in-house vs. COTS selection and time, cost and reliability were the most considered factors in the solutions. Optimization models were the most commonly proposed technique used in the solutions. Conclusion: The topic of choosing component origins is a green field for research, and in great need of empirical comparisons between the component origins, as well of how to decide between different combinations of them. Formal specification of non-functional properties of component-based software systems

component-based software engineering (CBSE) is viewed as an opportunity to deal with the increasing complexity of modern-day software. Along with CBSE comes the notion of component markets, where more or less generic pieces of software are traded, to be combined into applications by third-party application developers. For such a component market to work successfully, all relevant properties of components must be precisely and formally described. This is especially true for non-functional properties, such as performance, memory foot print, or security. While the specification of functional properties is well understood, non-functional properties are only beginning to become a research focus. This paper discusses semantic concepts for the specification of non-functional properties, taking into account the specific needs of a component market. based on these semantic concepts, we present a new specification language QML/CS that can be used to model non-functional product properties of components and component-based software systems.

When hard realtime matters:: software for complex mechatronic systems

A still growing number of software concepts and frameworks have been proposed to meet the challenges in the development of more and more complex robotic systems, like humanoids or networked robotics. The issue of hard realtime, however, has not been the main focus of such concepts, but is essential for building and controlling mechatronic systems. Here we discuss the specific demands of complex mechatronic systems and present a software concept, the "agile Robot Development" (aRD) concept, which we developed at our institute to pragmatically address these demands. We show that the performance of current computing and communication hardware allows for a flexible component-based concept with distributed execution, even in hard realtime with rates in the kHz range.
