An effective hybrid approach for the synthesis of pencil beams and shaped beams through 4D linear antenna arrays with constrained DRR

In this work, a novel hybrid approach combining differential evolution (DE) algorithm and convex programming (CP) is proposed for the synthesis of four-dimensional (4D) antenna arrays. To achieve ultra-low sidelobe level while suppressing sideband radiations simultaneously, the hybrid approach is applied to optimize static excitation coefficients and switch-on duration time separately. In particular, the hybrid approach fully makes use of the partial convexity of the problem with respect to the static excitation coefficients. CP is used to optimize static excitation coefficients for each set of switch-on duration time generated by the DE algorithm, while the DE algorithm is used to optimize the switch-on duration time only. Consequently, fewer optimization variables are needed and less iterations are required. The approach converges faster as compared to stochastic algorithms including all the optimization variables, especially for large arrays. Several numerical examples of the 4D antenna arrays are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid approach.

Applicability comparison of different algorithms for ambient signal based load model parameter identification

The time-varying characteristic of the power load can be tracked with the ambient signal based load model parameter identification method proposed recently. Meanwhile, the small fluctuations of the ambient signal bring higher requirement for optimization algorithm as well. The interior-point algorithm (IPA) and the activeset algorithm (ASA) are two typical traditional nonlinear constrained optimization algorithms, while the differential evolution algorithm (DEA) is an excellent heuristic search algorithm. Besides, the grid search algorithm (GSA) is a violent search algorithm, which is also an effective method considering the fact that the real load model parameters are unknown in practical power system. Based on the review of the basic idea of the four algorithms, the applicability of the four algorithms is comparatively assessed for ambient signal based load model parameter identification. Their performance is compared using ambient data from both simulation and field phasor measurement unit (PMU) in China Southern Power Grid considering the identification accuracy, calculation time, and the robustness to measurement error and algorithm parameters. Some general conclusions are drawn from the analysis for several cases.

A fuzzy pragmatic DE-CSA hybrid approach for unbalanced radial distribution system planning with distributed generation

This paper presents a multi-objective planning approach for the optimal placement of distributed generation (DG) units in unbalanced radial distribution systems using a hybrid differential evolution (DE) and cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). In this planning optimization, the objective functions formulated are the minimization of: (i) total real power loss, (ii) maximum average voltage deviation index, (iii) total neutral current, and (iv) total cost. The total cost includes the cost of energy purchased from the grid and the capital investment and operational cost of DG units. These objective functions are aggregated using max-max and max-min analogies. Fuzzy set theory is used to model the uncertainties in load and generation of renewable DG units. Hence, these objective functions are found to be fuzzy sets. An appropriate defuzzification approach is used so as to compare and rank different solutions. A modified three-phase forward-backward sweep-based load flow algorithm including the DG model is used as the support subroutine of the proposed solution algorithm using the hybrid DE-CSA. The simulation results show that significant improvements in power loss, maximum average voltage deviation, system unbalance, and total annual energy cost are obtained due to the DG integration in unbalanced distribution networks. The results obtained with fuzzy-based modeling of load and generation are found to be superior as compared to the deterministic load and generation.

Reactive power dispatch (RPD) is one of the important tasks in the operation and control of power system. This paper presents an efficient and reliable evolutionary-based approach to solve the RPD problem. The proposed approach employs differential evolution (DE) algorithm for optimal settings of RPD control variables. The proposed approach is examined and tested on the standard IEEE 30-bus test system with different objectives that reflect power losses minimization, voltage profile improvement, and voltage stability enhancement. The simulation results of the proposed approach are compared to those reported in the literature. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach and show its effectiveness and robustness to solve the RPD problem. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V. One of the most challenging problems in the computational biology is inferring the evolutionary history to construct phylogenetic trees. A phylogenetic tree is a branching topology that represents the evolutionary relationships among groups of organisms. Traditional construction methods of phylogenetic trees rely on building a multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of the corresponding sequences of organisms. However, achieving optimal MSA for a numerous number of sequences is computationally complex. Moreover, even if an optimal MSA is obtained, it may not reflect the evolutionary history of the sequences. So, several free-alignment methods for phylogenetic tree construction have been proposed. In this paper, we investigate a free-alignment construction method to infer the optimal phylogenetic tree based on differential evolution algorithm. The evaluation results confirm that the investigated method succeeds in building the optimal tree with accuracy higher than other considered methods.

Inversion of the rupture process and high-frequency radiation of the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

We studied the low- and high-frequency source processes of the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake, and focused on when and where the high-frequency (2.0-10.0 Hz) seismic energy was radiated in relation to the low-frequency (0.02-0.5 Hz) seismic energy. The low-frequency source processes were jointly inverted using teleseismic P and SH broadband waves combined with near-field strong motion data. A three-dimensional model considering real topography was used to compute the near-field Green's function. The high-frequency wave radiation was in versed using the envelope of acceleration seismograms of near-field records and the empirical Green's function by the differential evolution algorithm. The results showed the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake was a typical strike-slip earthquake with a seismic moment of about 6.9 x 10(18) N m and maximum slip of about 1.5 m. During the 2 s following the initial rupture, the earthquake radiated large high-frequency waves but small low-frequency waves. Then, the rupture broke the high stress drop area in the up-dip direction of the hypocenter, generating an obvious asperity located just above the hypocenter. About 60% of the seismic moment of the earthquake was released during about 2-6 s after initiation of the rupture. The high-frequency radiation areas were mostly located on the lower periphery of the asperity, in accordance with the complementary relationship between the distribution of high-frequency waves and zones of large slip, which might be attributable to both the initiation of the rupture and the breaking of the high stress drop area. Parts of the high-frequency radiation areas overlapped the lower part of the asperity, where the high-frequency radiation occurred about 2 s earlier than the low-frequency radiation. The stress drop of the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake was considerably lower than average for global intraplate earthquakes, but similar to that of the 2013 Lushan earthquake.

The Application of a differential evolution algorithm on Products Structure Optimization in Coal Preparation Plants

The problem of product structure optimization always appears in the coal preparation plants, mines, and mining areas three ranks. The differential evolution algorithm is applied to optimize the product structure in coal preparation plants. A model optimizing the coal product structure and maximizing economic benefit of coal preparation plants is developed, with the use of a differential evolution algorithm toolbox in optimization software called 1stopt, then the optimum solution of the products processing is achieved. The model using the differential evolution algorithm is tested through actual data;test results prove that the differential evolution algorithm can be used to optimize the product structure in coal preparation plants and it has characters of simple principle, strong ability of global convergence, memorizing optimum solution, and the optimization results accord with the practical situation.

The mass concrete structures play a very important role in civil engineering. The cracking of concrete is regarded as one of the biggest engineering problems. Therefore, it is very necessary for the cracking of mass concrete to do the control analysis. Some factors should be considered in mass concrete crack control analysis, mainly including the heat releases model of concrete, the mechanical model to the concrete, the process of temperature control in the pipe model. differential evolution algorithm and equivalent algorithm are adopted to solve the coefficient of adiabatic temperature and cool water effect. In the paper, stress field calculation, back analysis calculations, and cooling pipe processing create secondary development based on the ABAQUS software platform. The second development of the code is used to reasonably solve the problem with one actual aqueduct in hydraulic engineering.

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) technique for achieving classifiers and regressors. However, to obtain models with high accuracy and low complexity, it is necessary to define the kernel parameters as well as the parameters of the training model, which are called hyperparameters. The challenge of defining the more suitable value to hyperparameters is called the Parameter Selection Problem (PSP). However, minimizing the complexity and maximizing the generalization capacity of the SVMs are conflicting criteria. Therefore, we propose the Nature Inspired Optimization Tools for SVMs (NIOTS) that offers a method to automate the search process for the best possible solution for the PSP, allowing the user to quickly obtain several sets of good solutions and choose the one most appropriate for his specific problem. The PSP has been modeled as a Multiobjective Optimization Problem (MOP) with two objectives: (1) good precision and (2) low complexity (low number of support vectors). The user can evaluate multiple solutions included in the Pareto front, in terms of precision and low complexity of the model. Apart from the Adaptive Parameter with Mutant Tournament Multiobjective differential evolution (APMT-MODE), the user can choose other metaheuristics and also among several kernel options. Optimization is an art that is best performed by a well-tuned algorithm. Nature - instead of being fully deterministic - is evolutionary, vibrant and resourceful. The nature-inspired algorithms use the best combination and evolution strategy in a given situation. In this work, a new metaheuristic algorithm is developed by using social behavior in human dynasties. The motivation, conceptual framework, mathematical model, pseudocode and working of the algorithm are described in this paper and the adjoining papers. The proposed dynastic optimization algorithm (DOA) has evolved with the wind turbine micrositing (WTM) problem in mind. The proposed DOA has been successfully applied to the traditional WTM and encouraging results have been obtained. It is demonstrated that the proposed approach is equally viable as other existing algorithms, like the Genetic algorithm (GA) and differential evolution algorithm (DEA). The main advantage of the proposed DOA is that it is simple, unique, fast, unbiased and versatile in comparison with others. The validation of results has been made with respect to a few other mainstream algorithms in the literature, besides statistical sensitivity analysis is also performed. The 95% confidence interval forecasts for the power enhancement and cost reduction by using DOA against GA and DEA are encouraging and guarantee an adequate amount of mean increase in power output and a considerable average cost reduction.
