Multistage Flash Evaporator Control in PDE Representation

Conventionally, a multi-stage flash evaporation (MSF) process is modelled with a large system of nonlinear ODEs accounting for the pressure head, salinity and brine temperature changes spatially and temporarily. This paper demonstrates that the ODE system can be represented with PDEs as a simpler system and controlled efficiently with boundary controls that maximize the distillate production rate of MSF process. In PDE representation a whole desalination plant that includes brine recirculation can be modelled and controlled simpler than in ODE representation. © 2016

Design of consensus and adaptive consensus filters for distributed parameter systems

This work establishes an abstract framework that considers the distributed filtering of spatially varying processes using a sensor network. It is assumed that the sensor network consists of groups of sensors, each of which provides a number of state measurements from sensing devices that are not necessarily identical and which only transmit their information to their own sensor group. A modification to the local spatially distributed filters provides the non-adaptive case of spatially distributed consensus filters which penalize the disagreement amongst themselves in a dynamic manner. A Subsequent modification to this scheme incorporates the adaptation of the consensus gains in the disagreement terms of all local filters. Both the well-posedness of these two consensus spatially distributed filters and the convergence of the associated observation errors to zero in appropriate norms are presented. Their performance is demonstrated on three different examples of a diffusion partial differential equation with point measurements. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Boundary adaptive synchronization of networked PDEs with adaptive parameter estimators

This work considers the synchronization control of networked PDEs that have boundary observation and control. The PDEs are assumed identical, with information exchange dictated by a complete directed graph. Parametric uncertainties entering in the boundary, result in structured perturbation terms that may render the open loop system unstable. Additionally constant disturbance terms entering at the boundary are impeding state regulation. To address these parametric uncertainties, a precompensator is utilized to stabilize each networked PDE. Another component of the controller provides an on-line cancellation of the parametric uncertainties by attempting to cancel them through their adaptive estimate, and to attenuate the effects of boundary disturbances, their adaptive estimates are utilized in the controller. To provide a robustness in the adaptive estimation of the parametric uncertainties and the boundary disturbances, the standard adaptive laws are complemented with a consensus protocol term that penalizes the pairwise disagreement of the adaptive estimates. Finally, to enforce synchronization of all networked PDEs, a synchronization controller is included which utilizes only the outputs of all communicating PDE systems weighted by adaptive synchronization gains. These gains, derived from Lyapunov redesign methods, include a consensus term for added robustness and to enforce convergence. Simulation studies of five networked diffusion PDEs with boundary observation and control are included. © 2016

The computation of an optimal steady-state operating point in an experimental annealing furnace is considered. In particular, the optimum spatial distribution of electric power supplied to IR-lamps is computed to ensure the temperature uniformity in the specimen fillet. A control-oriented reduced-order model of the steady-state 2D temperature distribution is derived and compared with the full-order model. Saturation functions are used to consider input constraints in a tailored optimization problem. The evaluation of the optimal control input is carried out with the full-order model. Uniqueness of the solution of the optimization problem is investigated numerically. The temperature field in the specimen fillet deviates less than 0.4% of the setpoint value if sufficient heating power is available. © 2016

In this manuscript, the output regulation is addressed for a boundary controlled 2 × 2 system of first order linear hyperbolic PDEs subject to process and boundary input disturbances. Under the assumption that the structure of the exosystem is known, the full state feedback boundary control law is developed to achieve disturbances rejection and the reference signal tracking, simultaneously. In addition, the stability of the closed-loop system is ensured with the aid of the backstepping stabilization approach. Furthermore, the existence of the unique solution of the resulting regulator equations is proved, which is essential to the solvability of the output regulation problem. A simulation example is studied to demonstrate the performance of the proposed regulator.

Estimation of a gaseous release into the atmosphere using a formation of UAVs

The real-time estimation of a gaseous plume that results from gas released into the atmosphere by a moving aerial source is presented. The approach is utilizing a group of UAVs equipped with gas concentration sensors onboard and the concentration measurements are used in an estimation scheme in the form of a Luenberger observer. The estimator is modeled as the advection-diffusion equation, which is solved numerically in real-time using a finite volume method on a dynamically adapted computational grid. The UAVs maintain a rigid flying formation, with the control signals for the leader being provided by the Lyapunov-redesign method, which couples the UAV dynamics to the performance of the estimator. The follower UAVs provide plant information to the estimator and also compute the spatial gradients necessary for the implementation of the guidance scheme. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. © 2016

VITKOVICE POWER ENGINEERING joint-stock company designs and constructs the decentralized flexible energy cogeneration system (FES) with combined Brayton - Rankine cycle which represents a new solution of decentralized cogeneration energy sources. In FES, the heating medium is flue gas generated by combustion of a solid fuel. The heated medium is power gas, which is a gas mixture of air and water steam. Power gas is superheated in the main heat exchanger (MHE) and is led to the gas turbine that drives the asynchronous generator. In this paper, the principle of FES is briefly described. The protective control which prevents the damage of MHE by overheating is discussed. The dynamics of the MHE with respect to dynamics of protective control is presented. © 2016

Optimization of second order spatially distributed systems with multiple interconnected actuator/sensor pairs

This work considers the economic aspects in control implementation of second order spatially distributed systems. By opting to use multiple actuator/sensor pairs with limited capacity, instead of a single actuator/sensor pair with higher price and larger capacity, this work provides a first view into the economic, computational and communication aspects. Considering a large number of actuator/sensor pairs and the a priori defined controller architecture of static output feedback along with the collocation assumption of the actuators and sensors, the resulting closed-loop system is expressed in terms of a static output feedback gain matrix that defines the communication amongst the actuator/sensor pairs. The design problem is then to find the values of the static feedback gain matrix in order to optimize a performance measure. Using the energy of the second order infinite dimensional system as the performance measure, the resulting optimization is expressed in terms of the solution to a parameterized operator Lyapunov equation. Simulation studies of the wave PDE in one spatial dimension for different communication topologies, reveal the effects of communication on the performance of the closed loop system. © 2016

Flatness of a class of linear Volterra partial integro–differential equations

Flatness–based trajectory planning is addressed for a parabolic–like linear Volterra partial integro–differential equation (PIDE) with boundary control. For this purpose the PIDE is formally integrated which results in an implicit state and input parametrization. Successive approximation is used to explicitly resolve the implicit result in terms of a recursion scheme. Absolute and uniform convergence is verified by restricting the flat output trajectory to Gevrey class functions of a particular order. Simulation results confirm the applicability and illustrate the tracking behavior for finite time transitions between operating points along predefined transition paths. © 2016
