We show how error-detection Tasks (EDT) are an effective way for students to practice giving peer feedback. In EDT, students are presented with a solved physics problem, prepared by a fictional in-class peer, containing one or more errors - algebraic, procedural, or conceptual. Students must identify and explain how to correct the error(s), as though they were explaining it to the "peer" who wrote the solution. EDTs have been developed for a web-based learning platform (***) that provides students with asynchronous peer instruction such that students can provide feedback and evaluate feedback from other students. Results show that students trained with EDT significantly outperform a control group in correctly identifying errors and providing more meaningful feedback to their fictional in-class peer.

A compact AES core with on-line error-detection for FPGA applications with modest hardware resources

This paper presents a compact, low-cost, on-line error-detection architecture for a 32-bit hardware implementation of the AES. The implemented AES is specially designed for FPGA-based embedded applications, since it is tuned to specific FPGA logic resources. The on-line error-detection is based on parity codes. The parity prediction is implemented in the AES encryption, decryption, and key expansion process. The developed solution has been upgraded to an efficient BIST with a high fault coverage and a low hardware overhead. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Network coding is being viewed to have the potential for significant throughput improvement in network environment. However, these expected benefits are very fragile to malicious attacks, including message block content corruption and node compromise attacks. To solve these problems, both pollution detection and pollution correction based schemes have been proposed. These schemes are only effective in some limited scenarios. In this paper, we propose a new scheme that combines the benefits of the existing error-detection and error-correction (EDEC) schemes. The proposed scheme is similar in structure to the existing error-control based schemes. However, by appropriately modifying the rate of the underlying error-control scheme, we can improve the network throughput and robustness significantly. Our scheme can detect the malicious attacks by computing whether the syndromes are all zeros. By collecting all the non-zero syndromes, the malicious attacks within the error-decoding capacity of the underlying linear network coding can be removed and the original message can be recovered. Our theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EDEC scheme can improve the overall network performance dramatically with only a very moderate increase of the computational overhead.

Unifying quantum verification and error-detection: theory and tools for optimisations

With the advent of cloud-based quantum computing, it has become vital to provide strong guarantees that computations delegated by clients to quantum service providers have been executed faithfully. Secure-blind and verifiable-delegated quantum computing (SDQC) has emerged as one of the key approaches to address this challenge, yet current protocols lack at least one of the following three ingredients: composability, noise-robustness and modularity. To tackle this question, our paper lays out the fundamental structure of SDQC protocols, namely mixing two components: the computation which the client would like the server to perform and tests that are designed to detect a server's malicious behaviour. Using this abstraction, our main technical result is a set of sufficient conditions on these components which imply the security and noise-robustness of generic SDQC protocols in the composable Abstract Cryptography framework. This is done by establishing a correspondence between these security properties and the error-detection capabilities of the test computations. Changing the types of tests and how they are mixed with the client's computation automatically yields new SDQC protocols with different security and noise-robustness capabilities. This approach thereby provides the desired modularity as our sufficient conditions on test computations simplify the steps required to prove the security of the protocols and allows to focus on the design and optimisation of test rounds to specific situations. We showcase this by systematising the search for improved SDQC protocols for bounded-error quantum polynomial-time ( BQP ) computations. The resulting protocols do not require more hardware on the server's side than what is necessary to blindly delegate the computation without verification, and they outperform all previously known results.

The perturbation-based nonlinearity compensation (NLC) method is considered in conjunction with a forward error correction (FEC) code that is capable of detecting block errors. The FEC decoding is performed prior to the NLC, and NLC is then performed only for blocks, that could not be decoded correctly. The total NLC complexity is thus dramatically reduced to down to 1% in some cases w.r.t. the standard, hard decision-directed NLC performed prior to the FEC decoding. Negligible FEC decoding complexity increase is required for the subsequent decoding of the nonlinearity-compensated blocks. The proposed method achieves and sometimes outperforms the standard perturbation based NLC at a fraction of the overall complexity. Polar codes are used to exemplify the method.

Empirical results on parity-based soft error detection with software-based retry

Local triple modular redundancy (LTMR) is often the first choice to harden the FFs of a flash-based FPGA application against radiation-induced bitflips in space, but LTMR leads to an area overhead of roughly 300%. To cope with this significant overhead, we propose an error detection based approach. In this work, we compare parity-based error detection with software-based retry, and LTMR on a reference architecture regarding maximum frequency, area overhead and processing time. Our results show that our solution based on parity-based error-detection saves from 29% up to 36% of the area overhead caused by LTMR (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Protecting the Future of Information: LOCO Coding With error detection for DNA Data Storage

From the information-theoretic perspective, DNA strands serve as a storage medium for 4-ary data over the alphabet {A, T, G, C} . DNA data storage promises formidable information density, long-term durability, and ease of replicability. However, information in this intriguing storage technology might be corrupted because of error-prone data sequences as well as insertion, deletion, and substitution errors. Experiments have revealed that DNA sequences with long homopolymers and/or with low GC-content are notably more subject to errors upon storage. In order to address this biochemical challenge, constrained codes are proposed for usage in DNA data storage systems, and they are studied in the literature accordingly. This paper investigates the utilization of the recently-introduced method for designing lexicographically-ordered constrained (LOCO) codes in DNA data storage to improve performance. LOCO codes offer capacity-achievability, low complexity, and ease of reconfigurability. This paper introduces novel constrained codes, namely DNA LOCO (D-LOCO) codes, over the alphabet {A, T, G, C} with limited runs of identical symbols. Due to their ordered structure, these codes come with an encoding-decoding rule we derive, which provides simple and affordable encoding-decoding algorithms. In terms of storage overhead, the proposed encoding-decoding algorithms outperform those in the existing literature. Our algorithms are based on small-size adders, and therefore they are readily reconfigurable. D-LOCO codes are intrinsically balanced, which allows us to achieve balanced AT- and GC-content over the entire DNA strand with minimal rate penalty. Moreover, we propose four schemes to bridge consecutive codewords, three of which guarantee single substitution error detection per codeword. We examine the probability of undetecting errors over a presumed symmetric DNA storage channel subject to substitution errors only. We also show that D-LOCO codes are capacity-achieving and that

Despite improved performances of the latest Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems, transcription errors are still unavoidable. These errors can have a considerable impact in critical domains such as healthcare, when used to help with clinical documentation. Therefore, detecting ASR errors is a critical first step in preventing further error propagation to downstream applications. To this end, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for ASR error detection using audio-transcript entailment. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to frame this problem as an end-to-end entailment task between the audio segment and its corresponding transcript segment. Our intuition is that there should be a bidirectional entailment between audio and transcript when there is no recognition error and vice versa. The proposed model utilizes an acoustic encoder and a linguistic encoder to model the speech and transcript respectively. The encoded representations of both modalities are fused to predict the entailment. Since doctor-patient conversations are used in our experiments, a particular emphasis is placed on medical terms. Our proposed model achieves classification error rates (CER) of 26.2% on all transcription errors and 23% on medical errors specifically, leading to improvements upon a strong baseline by 12% and 15.4%, respectively.

Hamming code is well known for its single-bit error detection & correction capability. To provide such a capability, it introduces 4 redundancy bits in a 7-bit data item. These redundancy bits are to be interspersed at bit positions 2(n) (n = 0, 1, 2, 3) with the original data bits. After error detection & correction, if any, the data bits have to be reassembled by removing the redundancy bits. In the proposed improvement the redundancy bits will be appended at the end of data bits. This eliminates the overhead of interspersing the redundancy bits at the sender end and their removal at the receiver end after checking for single-bit error and consequent correction, if any. Further the effort needed in identifying the values of the redundancy bits is lower in the proposed novel method. Hamming code is normally used for transmission of 7-bit data item. Scaling it for larger data lengths results in a lot of overhead due to interspersing the redundancy bits and their removal later. In contrast, the proposed method is highly scalable without such overhead. Because of this feature it is suitable for transmission of large size data bit-streams with much lower redundancy bits per data bit ratio.

The error detection and recovery of robotic assembly tasks

A new approach to process modelling, task synthesis and motion control for robotic assembly, with emphasis on error detection and recovery, is presented. Assembly is modelled as a discrete event system using Petri nets. The abstraction to a discrete event system allows for the detection of state transitions including errors via a simple qualitative reasoning technique. The abstraction to a discrete event system also allows for task-level planning and control using velocity constraints derived from a geometric model of the process. Given the event recognition, task-level planning and task-level control, error detection and recovery are accomplished through a reconfiguration strategy based on contingency states. Experimentation verifies the success of the approach in the presence of both modelling and tracking errors.
