Circular trace transform and its PCA-based fusion features for image representation

To improve the image representation efficiency of trace transform (TT) features to images with circular and arc-shaped textures, the authors propose circular TT (CTT) to extract features. CTT consists of tracing an image with circles around which certain functionals of the image function are calculated. Quadruple CTT features can be generated through three successive functionals in the results of CTT, while different quadruple features can be obtained by choosing different combinations of successive functionals. These quadruple features can represent different texture properties and deeper intrinsic information of an image. By fusing CTT features and TT features based on PCA (FFCT_PCA), they construct a new complementary descriptor with much less dimension, further improving the representation performance for mixed texture images. Experimental results demonstrate that CTT has better performance than TT in recognising images with circular and arc-shaped textures, and FFCT_PCA has the potential to outperform the state-of-the-art feature extraction methods.

Abstract. This paper presents an analytical solution for the pressure transient response of a well producing from an arbitrary position within a circular drainage boundary. The analysis is performed for both constant pressure and no-flow outer boundary conditions. In the analysis of pressure effects in asymmetrical circular systems, the practice has been to represent the circular system by a square system for which solutions exist. While this representation yields adequate results for the cases of wells close to the center, this work shows that significant errors may arise in situations where the wells are close to the boundary. Dimen-sionless pressure drops are obtained by numerically inverting solutions in Laplace space and are plotted as functions of dimensionless *** the wellbore pressure behavior it can be inferred that an effect of the eccentricity of the system is an apparent reduction of the drainage radius. By introducing the concept of an "equivalent radius" in the constant pressure boundary case, we show that the eccentric system can be analyzed, for the most part, as if it were a symmetrical one. Shape factors are calculated and presented for various well locations. The shape factors show similarities to those for a square system for well positions close to the center but differ significantly for positions close to the boundaries.

The production of narrative through static imagery: examples from a peculiar medieval illustration

Certain images perform upon and with their readers. Among the performative capabilities of imagery is narrative function, where the reader actively constructs a sense of time from an otherwise static surface. An extraordinary medieval illustration of Saint Margaret's emergence from the belly of a dragon is used to demonstrate a range of narrative imagery. Consideration is given to the original conditions of this 'Margaretene', especially its medieval readership. This exemplar then contributes to a form of creative analysis, where other extant narrative strategies are utilized to visually 'tell' the same story. The result - a series of illustrations rendered by artist James Wisdom - permits a most direct comparison of six narrative strategies. The strategies outlined are graphic projective, partitioned, graphic repetitive, natural repetitive, intrafigural, and evidentiary. Certain trends emerge when the strategies are arranged in an axis based on naturalism. The reader must be more astute as strategies utilize more naturalistic scenes and thus become less dependent upon learned conventions and the repetition of figures.

Numerical Simulation of CBM Seepage Characteristics Based on Fracture Network images

The natural fracture network within the coal body serves as the main pathway for gas migration, with its geometric characteristics significantly impacting coalbed methane flow. In order to enhance the numerical model for simulating coalbed methane flow based on fracture network images, we define porosity and permeability functions for these images and improve upon existing methods. By employing a pixel probability decomposition algorithm, we establish a geometric model of a rough discrete fracture network, which is imported into COMSOL Multiphysics to build a numerical model of gas flow. We analyze the impact of different fracture structures on coal seam permeability and find that gas primarily flows through interconnected fractures at much higher velocities compared to matrix pores. Furthermore, we observe that fracture network permeability increases with increasing porosity (0.0635-0.164), fractal dimension (1.571-1.755), maximum fracture branch length (0.0111-0.0249 m), and connectivity (0.808-2.789). Conversely, it decreases with an increasing fracture dip angle (1.61-88.39 degrees) and tortuosity fractal dimension (1.0018-1.0195). Our simulation method based on fracture network imaging provides a simple yet feasible approach to simulate gas extraction while accurately capturing various stages in the extraction process, including the temporal and spatial evolution of gas velocity and pressure as well as differences between fractures and the coal matrix.

Metaphor and simplification strategies in the design of tourist guidebooks

Tourist guidebooks play an important role in providing supplementary information to travelers during their journeys and enable them to identify orientation and location and obtain other information. Hence, the design of icons used in tourist guidebooks is crucial. A fundamental design principle for indicative icons is that they should be simple and easy to understand. In this study, 66 university students were recruited in order to experimentally investigate how two strategies - simplification and metaphor - affect the design of tourist guidebooks. The findings demonstrate that to achieve 'semantic conveyance,' the use of metaphor or simplification combined with metaphor can provide the optimal effect. For 'design quality,' the use of simplification has the most significant effect. For 'symbolic significance' and 'comprehensive evaluation,' metaphor or simplification combined with metaphor can achieve the most significant effect. Finally, this paper proposes recommendations and considerations for future studies.

A novel shape descriptor, termed multi-scale bisector integrals, is proposed in this paper. Different from the existing Radon transform based descriptors which integrate the shape image function over all the possible lines in its domain, the proposed method restrains the integrals only over a special class of lines, termed shape bisectors, for characterizing the essence of the shape. Integrating the shape image over the multi-orders of shape bisectors yields a multi-scale descriptor. The proposed descriptor is completely invariant to translation, scaling and rotation. The experimental results on the standard MEPG-7 CE-2 shape database demonstrate its superiority over the state-of-the-art approaches.

The results of numerical simulations have confirmed that it is possible to recognize the existence of a perfectly conducting crack via subspace migration when an inaccurate wavenumber is applied, even though the exact shape cannot be retrieved. However, the theoretical reason for this phenomenon has not been confirmed. Due to this reason, we rigorously analyze subspace migration. In this regard, we prove that the imaging function is expressed by the zero-order Bessel function and theoretically identify why such a phenomenon occurs.

As reconfigurable platforms become more and more complex through heterogeneous architectures, exploiting the gained computational speedup efficiently remains a difficult task. Such FPGA based platforms like the Xilinx Zynq require detailed knowledge in FPGA design as well as embedded programming and platform configuration which makes it hard to exploit it for embedded applications where usually no reconfigurable hardware was used, e.g. optical ADAS applications. Through the development of the PYNQ system handling the entire platform by a Python interface becomes possible. The framework comes with a wide support of OpenCV functions for ARM-based processing. However, the main PYNQ project does not offer hardware support for these functions. In this paper, we describe the design an easy to use hardware library for applying complex image processing applications on PYNQ. Our library has been published as open-source repository. It supports various common image functions including Gaussian blur, Sobel or Median filter and even the Canny edge detection. Using the library does not require any hardware knowledge. Supported hardware functions are automatically detected and outsourced on the *** the provided HLS interface our library can be extended by adding further components. Our results show that the library can be used for accelerating typical ADAS tasks like lane detection in order to achieve real time performance.

image segmentation is to divide the image into a number of specific, unique characteristics of the region and to put forward the technology and process of the target of interest. It is the key step of preprocessing in the regime of image recognition and computer vision. Without correct image segmentation, there wouldn't be correct identification. However, the only basis for segmentation is the brightness and color of pixels in the image. Therefore, when the image is automatically processed by the computer segmentation, a variety of difficulties will be encountered. Because remote sensing image has many characteristics such as high resolution and unequal noise distribution, the traditional segmentation algorithm cannot achieve satisfactory accuracy when analyzing these images. This paper proposes a new image segmentation framework based on the graph theory. During the recent years, the use of graph theory in many mature theories and mathematical tools for image segmentation has become a hot topic in the field of image segmentation research. The graph theory is a branch of applied mathematics, and have a good relationship with the mapping between the images. This paper also includes experimental result on the high resolution that is spatial resolution 0.1～0.3 m for remote sensing image.
