Rehearsals in Citizenship: BBC Stop-Motion Animation Programmes For Young Children

This essay argues that BBC stop-motion animations for under-fives reflect changes in British culture and citizenship over the second half of the twentieth century, and can be regarded as rehearsals in citizenship. This argument is considered in the context of debates about the BBC's ethos in relation to British democracy, culture and citizenship 1922-1999, and previous studies of children's programmes. The earlier 1967-1969 programmes-Trumpton and Chigley-represent a citizenship operating in relation to a structured, protective social state, defined by a national boundary, while the later 1998-2001 Bob the Builder is consistent with the globalisation of the late-twentieth century, in which a communitarian, privatised citizenship is characterised by individualism and personal autonomy, with their attendant risks. Young children are rehearsed in configurations of citizenship through narrative strategies and modes of audience address. This essay demonstrates that the representations of disciplinary mechanisms and citizenship closely conform to Foucauldian theory as developed by Foucault (1980, 1991) and Rose (1999a, 1999b). The essay argues that greater academic attention should be devoted to texts for young children, and that Foucauldian theory should be developed to allow space for the study of children as agents and vehicles of governmentality.

Management development practices: empirical evidence from Sri Lanka

Being a South Asian developing country, management development (MD) practices in Sri Lanka has received insufficient attention. The paper reports results of an empirical investigation of 219 managers and 78 human resource (HR) managers on MD practices in Sri Lanka. The study investigated different processes by which MD takes place in organizations, the nature of immediate senior managers' support for MD, the importance given to the HRM function in the organizational strategy and the HR managers' contribution to the organizational strategy on MD aspects. The research findings indicate more similar MD practices across the three forms of ownership - local, foreign and joint venture. The conclusions address the existing practice and implications.

Towards a revaluation of the legend of "saint" William of Norwich and its place in the blood libel legend

The legend of William of Norwich is extremely well known and often quoted in discussions of defamatory folklore. However, since I started working on it three or four years ago I have found that there are surprisingly few folkloric analyses. Leaving aside those who have attempted to believe the story and to use it as anti-Jewish propaganda, most of the respectable work has been done by historians and has tended to concentrate either on debunking the legend or on attempting to reconstruct events in Norwich during Easter 1144. My aim in this paper is to redress this balance and tackle a couple of the more folkloric questions.

Ecclesial Communion: The Letters of St Basil the Great Revisited

The German word Kirchengemeinschaft, translated as 'ecclesial communion' or 'communion of churches', is a term frequently used in contemporary ecumenical discourse. Are 'communion of churches' or 'ecclesial communion' leading concepts for future ecumenism? Starting from the fact that modern ecumenism and ecclesiology often refer to communio/kappa omicron iota v omega i alpha in the Early Church as their model or ideal, this article investigates more closely how kappa omicron iota v omega vi alpha worked in that period. Basil the Great's letters serve as an example to show not so much the theoretical but the practical impact of kappa omicron iota v omega vi alpha on everyday church life. They also demonstrate how Basil applied kappa omicron iota v omega vi alpha on different levels and indicate what is required to facilitate it. Finally, they give some indication of what this could mean for ecumenism today.

The photographs scattered across the pages of the book are central to the idea that memory can be considered from the point of view of objects, things and images - a world charged with the capacity to remember us. The question that follows is: How is it possible to write the dilemma of memory other than as a process of conscious remembrance? And, moreover, what role does photography play in this writing?

Exemplary teaching: some possibilities for renovating and stimulating didactic practice

Exemplary teaching is directed to the essences of a lesson theme and provides possibilities for successfully implementing the essential conditions for educative and formative tasks. A particular example is not chosen to serve as a first learning step but because the essence of a greater whole is reflected in it. This gives teaching a depth where originality is pursued at the expense of completeness. In practice the aim is to use a particular example to give pupils the opportunity to experience the essence of a matter or phenomenon. Exemplary teaching does not force the learner to master vast quantities of factual knowledge. As a fundamental didactic form it presents a solution to rigidity in teaching, as well as to the problem of overburdening the pupil.

Drowning in early Dickens

Drowning was a Victorian obsession, and Charles Dickens' use of it as a trope was both paradigmatic and extraordinary. Like many other novelists of the Victorian period, Dickens repeatedly drowned his characters, but his use of death by water was different to that of his contemporaries because of the sheer frequency with which he employed the trope. Moreover, the most-common trope of drowning was usually that of the suicidal woman, but of the thirty-something characters that drown in the Dickensian canon, none are women. This article addresses why Dickens' texts seem to be out of step with the Victorian metaphorical economy while also exploring the ways in which nineteenth-century water has been simplistically gendered in recent criticism. The work of Helen V. Emmit, Mary Jane Lupton, and others has historically situated water as unproblematically feminine, and drowning as a return to the womb. However, the Dickensian canon throws up a number of examples which imply that the gender status of water was much more mutable than previous studies have suggested;consequently, there is nothing epistemologically or phenomenologically clear about Dickensian waters. The article concludes by suggesting that, for the mid- to late Victorians, drowning was metonymically linked with coitus, and consequently had developed an active role and fluctuating sexual identity in the drowning of its victims by selecting, luring, clasping, and violating;and finally transforming, assimilating and obliterating its drownees.
