Astrophysical black holes are expected to be described by the Kerr metric. This is the only stationary, vacuum, axisymmetric metric, without electromagnetic charge, that satisfies Einstein’s equations and does not have pathologies outside of the event horizon. We present new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr prediction based on 2017 EHT observations of Sagittarius A∗ (Sgr A∗). We calibrate the relationship between the geometrically defined black hole shadow and the observed size of the ring-like images using a library that includes both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. We use the exquisite prior constraints on the mass-to-distance ratio for Sgr A∗ to show that the observed image size is within ∼ 10% of the Kerr predictions. We use these bounds to constrain metrics that are parametrically different from Kerr as well as the charges of several known spacetimes. To consider alternatives to the presence of an event horizon we explore the possibility that Sgr A∗ is a compact object with a surface that either absorbs and thermally re-emits incident radiation or partially reflects it. Using the observed image size and the broadband spectrum of Sgr A∗, we conclude that a thermal surface can be ruled out and a fully reflective one is unlikely. We compare our results to the broader landscape of gravitational tests. Together with the bounds found for stellar mass black holes and the M87 black hole, our observations provide further support that the external spacetimes of all black holes are described by the Kerr metric, independent of their mass. © 2023, CC BY.

This research aims to evaluate the management of physics laboratories as supporting education in the public high school in Jambi City. The research methodology used is the evaluation of the program with model CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) subject of the study of the school principal, head of the laboratory, the Chairman of the BOS fund Committee (School Operational Assistance), physics teacher, technician, laboratory assistant and students at Public Senior High School Jambi City Year lesson 2018/2019. Collection of data using polls, observations, documentation, and interviews. Based on the results of the evaluation of Physics Laboratory, the management of physics laboratories has not been optimally running because several aspects have not been fulfilled, such as lack of facilities and infrastructure and limited experts in the management of physical laboratories, both laboratory assistant and technicians. The equipment in the physics laboratory has been following the Government regulation No. 24 of 2007 about the standards of physics laboratories, but most of the life of the equipment has crossed the boundary so that many tools are experiencing damage.

Pinanga javana is an endemic palm species that only grows on Java, especially in the montane forest. Information about the ecology of P. javana has not been widely revealed, especially concerning growth and distribution patterns in nature. The data is needed to support the success of this type of conservation effort. The study aimed to explain the pattern of distribution and development of P. javana growth in its natural habitat. The method of data collection was done by making a sampling measuring 10x10 m. The research location was located on the eastern slope and the southern slope of Mt. Slamet. Data analysis used the Morisita index to find out the distribution patterns. Descriptive analysis was used to explain the development of P. javana growth. The results showed that the pattern of the distribution of P. javana in its natural habitat was spread in groups. The morphological development of P. javana growth follows the Corner architecture model. Seeds of P. javana are included in the recalcitrant seed type and are hypogeal sprouts. The dispersal agent of P. javana seeds is carried out by a common civet palm (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus).

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/c and 0.5–7 GeV/c, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au+Au collisions and p+p collisions, IAA and ΔAA, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Δϕ, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-pT associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

We present the first Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A∗), the Galactic center source associated with a supermassive black hole. These observations were conducted in 2017 using a global interferometric array of eight telescopes operating at a wavelength of λ = 1.3 mm. The EHT data resolve a compact emission region with intrahour variability. A variety of imaging and modeling analyses all support an image that is dominated by a bright, thick ring with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 µas (68% credible interval). The ring has modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry and a comparatively dim interior. Using a large suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the EHT images of Sgr A∗ are consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole with mass ∼4 × 106 M☉, which is inferred to exist at this location based on previous infrared observations of individual stellar orbits as well as maser proper motion studies. Our model comparisons disfavor scenarios where the black hole is viewed at high inclination (i > 50◦), as well as non-spinning black holes and those with retrograde accretion disks. Our results provide direct evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and for the first time we connect the predictions from dynamical measurements of stellar orbits on scales of 103 − 105 gravitational radii to event horizon-scale images and variability. Furthermore, a comparison with the EHT results for the supermassive black hole M87∗ shows consistency with the predictions of general relativity spanning over three orders of magnitude in central mass. © 2023, CC BY.

Indonesia home of abundant indigenous and hybrid rice varieties. The phenomenon of phenotipic-plasticity allows varieties or even the same species to exhibit different phenotypic characteristics when planted in different locations. Thus, the identification based on phenotypic characters is needed to be supported by genetic data. The aim of this research was to unveil the relationship between local rice varieties provided from East Java, Banten, and Samarinda based on matK and rbcL genes. Total DNA from leaves were used as template for amplification of both genes. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed using Neighbour-Joining (NJ) models in Kimura-2 parameters with 1000 bootstraps. The phylogenetic analysis using matK proved that rice varieties from East Java were closely related to rice varieties from Banten rather than to rice varieties from Samarinda. Meanwhile the same study using the rbcL gave inconsistent results

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here, we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron (π±, K±, p, p¯) production at midrapidity in p+Al, He3+Au, and Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV and U+U collisions at sNN=193GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum (pT) and transverse-mass (mT) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of K/π and p/π have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu+Au and U+U) and small (p+Al and He3+Au) collision systems. The values of K/π ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in p+p collisions. However, the values of p/π ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of ≈0.6, which is a factor of ≈2 larger than in p+p collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (RAB) are also presented. Enhancement of proton RAB values over meson RAB values was observed in central He3+Au, Cu+Au, and U+U collisions. The proton RAB values measured in the p+Al collision system were found to be consistent with RAB values of ϕ, π±, K±, and π0 mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in p+Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

We present cosmological constraints from the abundance of galaxy clusters selected via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect in South Pole Telescope (SPT) data with a simultaneous mass calibration using weak gravitational lensing data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The cluster sample is constructed from the combined SPT-SZ, SPTpol ECS, and SPTpol 500d surveys, and comprises 1,005 confirmed clusters in the redshift range 0.25–1.78 over a total sky area of 5200 deg2. We use DES Year 3 weak-lensing data for 688 clusters with redshifts z<0.95 and HST weak-lensing data for 39 clusters with 0.6286±0.032, σ8=0.817±0.026, and the parameter combination σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.25=0.805±0.016. Our measurement of S8≡σ8Ωm/0.3=0.795±0.029 and the constraint from Planck CMB anisotropies (2018 TT, TE, EE+lowE) differ by 1.1σ. In combination with that Planck dataset, we place a 95% upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses ∑mν<0.18 eV. When additionally allowing the dark energy equation of state parameter w to vary, we obtain w=−1.45±0.31 from our cluster-based analysis. In combination with Planck data, we measure w=−1.34−0.15+0.22, or a 2.2σ difference with a cosmological constant. We use the cluster abundance to measure σ8 in five redshift bins between 0.25 and 1.8, and we find the results to be consistent with structure growth as predicted by the ΛCDM model fit to Planck primary CMB data.

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U, and V respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties. © 2023, CC BY.
