Promising application of fine bubbles (FBs) to control Aeromonas hydrophila on striped catfish seed (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

This research aims to determine the potential of fine bubbles (FBs) technology in controlling the activity of Aeromonas hydrophila in striped catfish rearing. The method used in this study is an experimental method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of three treatments and four replications. The treatments are using conventional aeration, FBs applied by recirculating system and FBs applied for 1 hour/day. The fish infected by A. hydrophila as much as 2 mL of NaCl/L solution with a density of 108 cfu by cohabitation. The parameters that were observed are clinical signs, mortality time and water quality. Preliminary results showed that FBs have potential as antibacterial with inhibitory zone diameter 4.17±0.17 mm. The time of death of striped catfish seedlings that were treated with FBs continuously in the recirculation system showed a relatively slower death time and lower mortality than the maintenance without FBs. The application of FBs in recirculation system has a better influence on controlling A. hydrophila, but not for controlling A. hydrophila curatively. The recovery process began to occur on the 3rd day, the fish was healed on the 8th day and was able to restore striped catfish response both to the shock response (on the 9th day) and feed response (on the 11th day).

Today microorganisms have been widely used to support human life. Some examples include foodstuffs (***), to help with medical needs, for mining purposes and more. On the other hand, the development of technology is also very big influence on human life. The combination of technology and health science will be very useful if we can develop it. One is the cancer treatment by utilizing the movement of the flagella to be made a nanorobot used as a carrier of cancer drugs. Movement of flagella that resembles the shape of the arc and straight line can be searched formulation and then applied to the manufacture of nanorobot tail. Then the nanorobot will carry a cancer drug that leads directly to the cancer cells. So hopefully with this nanorobot, can minimize the death of healthy cells around cancer cells. From the results of research and analysis of the movement of flagella, it can be concluded that the smaller the mass of the flagella, the greater the efficiency will be or will be more efficient. So, the energy needed nanorobot will be smaller. Model with non-sinusoidal approach (Brokaw, 1965) is discussed in this work and formulation to get the energy efficiency is proposed and analyzed. Unfortunately, there is a negative value in the formulation.

Pandeglang district is one of the fishery production centers in Banten province which is the largest producer of high economic fish in Banten province. One of the dominant species caught is mackerel (Rastrelliger spp). Production of mackerel is fluctuated due to the condition of fishing areas that are always changing related to the fertility of the waters. Lack of information to fishermen associated with fishing areas leads to unstable catches. This study aims to provide an overview of the fertility of waters around Pandeglang waters using sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a parameters based on satellite data during the western and transitional season (January to May) 2017. The method used in this study is survey method by collecting primary data in the form of catch and capture data, sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a data in some fishing areas, and secondary data of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a during the west season and transitional seasons taken from AQUA MODIS satellite images. The results of this study indicated that the highest yield of mackerel fish obtained in May is about 98 kg/trip with sea surface temperature conditions ranging from 30.49 °C - 31.10 °C and chlorophyll-a concentrations between 0.21 - 0.58 mg/L. This condition can be used as a reference in determining potential fishing areas that are beneficial to fishermen, especially in Pandeglang regency.

Biological invasions threaten global biodiversity, human well-being and economies. Many regional and taxonomic syntheses of monetary costs have been produced recently but with important knowledge gaps owing to uneven geographic and taxonomic research intensity. Here we combine species distribution models, macroeconomic data and the InvaCost database to produce the highest resolution spatio-temporal cost estimates currently available to bridge these gaps. From a subset of 162 invasive species with 'highly reliable' documented costs at the national level, our interpolation focuses on countries that have not reported any costs despite the known presence of invasive species. This analysis demonstrates a substantial underestimation, with global costs potentially estimated to be 1,646% higher for these species than previously recorded. This discrepancy was uneven geographically and taxonomically, respectively peaking in Europe and for plants. Our results showed that damage costs were primarily driven by gross domestic product, human population size, agricultural area and environmental suitability, whereas management expenditure correlated with gross domestic product and agriculture areas. We also found a lag time for damage costs of 46 years, but management spending was not delayed. The methodological predictive approach of this study provides a more complete view of the economic dimensions of biological invasions and narrows the global disparity in invasion cost reporting.

Escolar (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) is one exported fish products in Indonesia. This research was aim to investigate metal content especially mercury and chromium in escolar fishes which collected from fisheries management area 573. Escolars were group into three categories, which were 4 kg, 8 kg, and 12 kg in weight. Metal analysis was done on their meat (muscle), liver, and gill. The metal measurement was done using atomic absorption spectrophotometry AAS Agilent Technologies 200 AA. Data of metal content were then statistically analyzed using factorial design. The result showed that content of chromium was ranged from 0.04 – 0.08 ppm in gill and 0.09 – 0.66 ppm in meat. However, the content of chromium in the liver is not detected. This content was contrast to the content of mercury, which was variated (0.02-3.87 ppm) among organs and weight group of escolar. It seems that the liver contained higher mercury than other organs of each weight group. Based on the average value, meat of escolar at 8 kg contained the lowest mercury which was 0.68 ppm. This was slightly different to which was 0.63 mg/kg (ppm) for its mercury content. Based on the factorial analysis, it showed that contains of mercury all organs and group were significantly different (p < 0.05). Unfortunately, this finding was above for mercury content in fish generally, which is 0.5 mg/kg.

Context. There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching the TeV energy range, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims. In this work we aim to study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. Crab pulsar observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods. We analyzed a total of ∼103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. To characterize the Crab pulsar emission over a broader energy range, a new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including ∼14 years of observations. Results. The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra is reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance level of 15.2σ. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10σ), as well as the so-called bridge emission between them (5.7σ). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of ∼3.44 and ∼3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. The detailed results obtained in the first observations of the Crab pulsar with LST-1 show the potential that CTAO will have to study this type of sources. © 2024, CC

Synthesis of colloidal platinum nanoparticles using pulse laser ablation method

High-purity platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) has been successfully synthesized in a pure water by using laser ablation method utilizing low-power neodymium yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser at fundamental wavelength. Experimentally, pulse laser beam (Nd:YAG laser, 1064 nm, 7 ns, 30 mJ) was directed and focused onto a high-purity platinum sheet (99.9%), which was placed into a pure liquid of deionized water, to produce PtNPs colloid. The morphology, size distribution and optical properties of the Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and UV-vis spectrometer. The average diameter of Pt NPs prepared in 10 Hz and 15 Hz ranges around 8 nm and 9 nm, respectively. Dark-yellow color colloid containing high-purity PtPs was successfully produced.

Fragrance rice (Oryza sativa) recognized as an international crop commodity with high price. Betaine- aldehyde-dehydrogenase-2 (Badh2) is known as a key role in the accumulation of fragrant compound in rice, 2-acetyl-1- pyrroline (2AP). Nucleotide deletion of 8bp in exon 7 inactivates Badh2 causing in the increasing level of 2AP. The objective of this study was to determine among 20 Indonesian local rice varieties from Banten, Samarinda and Banyuwangi which genetically potential for producing fragrance rice based on Badh2 gene. Total DNA was isolated from leaves and Badh2 gene was amplified using PCR with specific primers. The evaluation based on amplified Badh2 fragments was carried out by electrophoresis in 1% agarose. Based on this study we suggest that Pandan Ungu from Samarinda and Blambangan A3 from Banyuwangi are the varieties which potential to produce fragrance rice.

Single Garlic Oil (SGO) extract from Indonesian tropical plant contains active compound such as S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxides(alliin), allicin, Z-ajoene, and E-ajoene. SGO has been used for hyperlipidemia. This study observed the potency of SGO on body weight gain, liver weight, and improved hepatic steatosis that caused consumption of high-fat diet (HFD). Twenty-four males Balb C mice divided into six group: normal diet, HFD treated with statin 26 mg/kgBW (positive control), HFD without treatment (negative control), HFD treated with SGO 12.5 mg/kgBW, HFD treated with SGO 25 mg/kgBW, and HFD treated with 50 mg/kgBW. The result shown SGO treatment significantly decreased body weight gain and liver weight compared with negative control group (P < 0.05). SGO treatment also showed ameliorated hepatic steatosis and the hepatocyte has a similar shape with the normal group. This study shown that SGO has effective treatment on hyperlipidemia considered to suppress body weight gain, decreased liver and spleen weight, and improved hepatic steatosis.
