Some aerial tasks are achieved more efficiently and at a lower cost by a group of independently controlled micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) when compared to a single, more sophisticated robot. Controlling formation flight can be cast as a two-level problem: stabilization of relative distances of agents (formation shape control) and control of the center of gravity of the formation. To date, accurate shape control of a formation of MAVs usually relies on external tracking devices (e.g. fixed cameras) or signals (e.g. GPS) and uses centralized control, which severely limits its deployment. In this paper, we present an environment-independent approach for relative MAV formation flight, using a distributed control algorithm which relies only on embedded sensing and agent-to-agent communication. In particular, an on-board monocular camera is used to acquire relative distance measurements in combination with a consensus-based distributed Kalman filter. We evaluate our methods in- and outdoors with a formation of three MAVs while controlling the formation's center of gravity manually.

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter;neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s. Human action recognition from videos is a challenging machine vision task with multiple important application domains, such as humanrobot/ machine interaction, interactive entertainment, multimedia information retrieval, and surveillance. In this paper, we present a novel approach to human action recognition from 3D skeleton sequences extracted from depth data. We use the covariance matrix for skeleton joint locations over time as a discriminative descriptor for a sequence. To encode the relationship between joint movement and time, we deploy multiple covariance matrices over sub-sequences in a hierarchical fashion. The descriptor has a fixed length that is independent from the length of the described sequence. Our experiments show that using the covariance descriptor with an off-the-shelf classification algorithm outperforms the state of the art in action recognition on multiple datasets, captured either via a Kinect-type sensor or a sophisticated motion capture system. We also include an evaluation on a novel large dataset using our own annotation.

It is crucial for real-time embedded system to design and verify for a little fault may lead to a catastrophe. Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is a modeling language used to design and analysis the architecture of real-time embedded system based on Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Code generation of AADL model to codes running on the Real-time Operation System can avoid hand-writing mistakes and improve the efficiency of development. Partitioning is introduced into embedded system to control fault transmission. This paper presents a mapping approach to generate codes from AADL model for partitioned system, and the generated codes which include configuration codes and C codes will run on a partitioned platform. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Creating descriptors for trajectories has many applications in robotics/human motion analysis and video copy detection. Here, we propose a novel descriptor for 2D trajectories: Histogram of Oriented Displacements (HOD). Each displacement in the trajectory votes with its length in a histogram of orientation angles. 3D trajectories are described by the HOD of their three projections. We use HOD to describe the 3D trajectories of body joints to recognize human actions, which is a challenging machine vision task, with applications in human-robot/machine interaction, interactive entertainment, multimedia information retrieval, and surveillance. The descriptor is fixed-length, scale-invariant and speed-invariant. Experiments on MSR-Action3D and HDM05 datasets show that the descriptor outperforms the state-of-the-art when using off-the-shelf classification tools.

Detecting epileptic seizure onsets is the main goal of numerous studies, since it has many profits for patients and clinicians. Methods based on electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and other electrophysiological signals had been used for automatic detection in the literature. For the first time, absence seizures have been detected based on ECG signals in this study. Animal models of absence epilepsy, WAG\Rij rats, with repetitive seizures (duration about few seconds'), have been investigated. After detecting QRS complexes from ECG signal and extracting 38 different linear, nonlinear and frequency domain features from heart rate variability, feature vectors were constructed. In order to obtain high efficiency detection algorithm, feature selection have been implemented based on wrapper approach. Results related to support vector machine (SVM), linear discriminate analysis (LDA), and k-nearest neighbor (kNN), three important classifiers for seizure detection have been compared in this work. The test results for patient-independent detection with 5 selected features in leave-one-out (LOO) train approach had accuracy of 74%, 72% and 71% for SVM, LDA and kNN, respectively. All the algorithms and methods have been optimized to be useful in embedded implementations. © 2013 IEEE.

We proposed a novel visible polarizer based on multilayer silicon and silicon oxide alternative subwavelength grating and its optical characteristic is numerically investigated by finite difference time domain method. The reflectance of TE mode and transmission of TM mode are above 90% with extinction ratio up to 10 3 . Moreover, the proposed polarizer also has wide angular field and large fabrication tolerance.

Multi-block gray statistics local dimming algorithm is proposed to automatically control the brightness of the backlight for reducing energy consumption and enhancing the image quality. The large blocks are used to determine the value of backlight matrix and small blocks are to determine the image block brightness. With the use of BMA (Blur-mask approach) to blur the backlight brightness matrix and compensate LCD control signal, local dimming function is realized. The simulation results show that: for pictures, the average backlight power consumption is decreased markedly by 19.9% and the contrast ratio is increased by 53%.

Automatic face photo-sketch image retrieval has attracted great attention in recent years due to its important applications in real life. The major difficulty in automatic face photo-sketch image retrieval lies in the fact that there exists great discrepancy between the different image modalities (photo and sketch). In order to reduce such discrepancy and improve the performance of automatic face photo-sketch image retrieval, we propose a new framework called multi-feature canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) to effectively address this problem. The MCCA is an extension and improvement of the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) algorithm using multiple features combined with two different random sampling methods in feature space and sample space. In this framework, we first represent each photo or sketch using a patch-based local feature representation scheme, in which histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) and multi-scale local binary pattern (MLBP) serve as the local descriptors. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is then performed on a collection of random subspaces to construct an ensemble of classifiers for photo-sketch image retrieval. Extensive experiments on two public-domain face photo-sketch datasets (CUFS and CUFSF) clearly show that the proposed approach obtains a substantial improvement over the state-of-the-art.
