This paper addresses the problem of optimal rate allocation for video streaming in a multi-path peer-to-peer mesh network. We present a distributed rate allocation algorithm that minimizes the total rate distortion among receiving peers. The scheme assumes that video streams can be transcoded/re-quantized at intermediate peers. We deploy a double pricing solution that simultaneously incorporates both the network and the relay constraints. We compare it with a single pricing solution where the relay constraint is applied only after all the communicating peers have converged. Our simulation shows that the double pricing solution consistently achieves a smaller aggregate distortion for all peers in comparison to the single pricing solution and thus achieves higher video quality.

We present a distributed rate allocation algorithm with the goal of minimizing the total video distortion among peers receiving the same video. The scheme assumes that video streams can be transcoded/re- quantized at intermediate peers. We deploy a double pricing solution that simultaneously incorporates the network and the relay constraints in the peer-to-peer network and compare it with a single pricing solution where the relay constraint is applied only after all the communicating peers converge to optimality. We combine our solution with two video adaptation techniques: transcoding using times 264 and scalable coding using H.264 SVC (scalable video coding) extension. Our experiment shows that the double pricing solution consistently achieves a smaller aggregate distortion for all peers over the single pricing solution.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) is a powerful platform for a variety of multimedia streaming applications over the Internet such as video-on-demand, video conferencing, live broadcasting, etc. A P2P system is extremely cost-effective since it utilizes the resources (CPU cycles, storage space, and uplink bandwidth) of peer *** decentralized and shared bandwidth nature of a P2P network, therefore, makes it an effective choice for implementing video conferencing applications. In this work, Vanets is presented , a P2P based video conferencing system that takes advantage of transcoding to optimally allocate streaming rates for all participating peers. The solution presented in this paper distinguishes between active and passive participants and enhances the video quality of the active participant.

Optical switches are important devices in optical communications. A blocking 88 thermo-optic waveguide switch matrix and a rearrangeable nonblocking one are designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. The building block of the matrix is a 22 switch cell with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) configuration, where a general multi-mode interferometer (MMI) serves as splitter/combiners. Nonblocking switch matrix presents excess loss of 10.9dB7tild;13.6dB and crosstalk of -26.6dB7tild;-13.5dB. Blocking one presents excess loss of 6.6dB9.6dB and crosstalk of -25.8dB~-16.8dB. Their extinction ratios vary from 17dB to 25dB. The power consumption of each switch cell is less than *** response time is less than 3s. The power consumption and the response times are much better than that of silica-based or polymer-based switch matrix because of the large thermo-optic coefficient and the high thermal conductivity of silicon. © 2009 SPIE.

Contact map is the simplified, 2D representation of protein spatial structure. Contact map prediction is an intermediate step to predict protein 3D structure. Ensemble learning-based model is a collection of learners that is more accurate than a single learner. In this paper we propose an ensemble learning method for contact map prediction. Results show that a considerable performance improvement is attainable using this approach instead of using a single model.

In single frequency network (SFN), there exist some special long delay spread channels as well as conventional multi-path channels. For pilot-aided orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems, channel estimation is usually accomplished by interpolation with pilots. However, few pilot subcarriers exist within coherent bandwidth under the long delay spread channels in SFN. In this case, conventional interpolation methods cannot work properly. This paper proposes a sine-wave based frequency domain interpolation method for channel estimation of pilot-aided OFDM systems in SFN. As simulation results show, the proposed method gives accurate channel estimation under the long delay spread channels, whereas the mismatched Wiener interpolation filter (WIF) estimates channel response inaccurately. Moreover, the proposed method performs well under conventional multi-path channels, especially for systems which adopt high order modulations.

Fabrication of microscale and nanoscale silicon waveguide devices requires patterning silicon, but until recently, exploitation of the technology has been restricted by the difficulty of forming ever-small features with minimum linewidth fluctuation. A technique was developed for fabricating such devices achieving vertical sidewall profile, smooth sidewall roughness of less than10 nm, and fine features of 40 nm. Subsequently, silicon microring resonator and silicon-grating coupler were realized using this technique.

This paper introduces, for the first time, electrodeposited gold as a new adsorbent material for micro preconcentration applications. The thin film gold layer serves as both an adsorbent and a resistive heater thus allowing self-heating capability without the need for additional off or on-chip heaters. The self-heating adsorbent enhances the desorption efficiency, reduces power consumption, and is simple to fabricate. The gold layer is deposited by seedless electroplating on silicon microstructures embedded in the cavity of microfabricated preconcentrators (¿PCs). The presented devices have outer dimensions of 7 mm × 7 mm, total inner surface area of ~10 m 2 , total inner volume of ~6.5 ¿L, and encompass more than 3500 high-aspect-ratio (30 ¿m × 120 ¿m × 240 ¿m) pillars. The ¿PC design provided high surface to volume ratio, high adsorption capacity, and improved sample distribution. The performance of these ¿PCs has been evaluated by using the preconcentration factor of several samples as a performance metric. Preconcentration factors of 810, 6156, 405 has been determined for 1-propanol, methanol and acetone, respectively.
