This paper proposes an alternative docking charger station for mobile robots. One crucial task in swarm robots scenario is to find low battery robots and recover them. Overcoming this problem requires a versatile mobile charging station that is able to actively locate and charge inactive mobile robots unlike the conventional stationary docking stations. The mobile charger robot should perform independent tasks other than the swarm robots global task. It uses similar communication method with other swarm robots, however new preprogrammed instructions are required to facilitate battery charging task for swarm robots.

In this paper, we establish a rate duality between the forward and reverse links of MIMO interference channel, where the reverse links are obtained by exchanging the roles of transmitters and receivers in the forward links, and the corresponding channel matrices are conjugate transpose of the forward channel matrices. Since the capacity region for general interference channel is unknown, we show that the forward and reverse links have the same achievable rate region by treating interference as noise under some sum power constraint. The explicit expression of the corresponding input covariance matrix transformation is provided. We discuss the connection between the proposed transformation and the MAC-BC transformations in the previous works. As an application, a duality based iterative algorithm is proposed to maximize the sum rate of MIMO interference channel under sum power constraint. We also extend the algorithm to individual power constraint. The proposed algorithms are shown to be effective by simulation.

In this article, the fabrication process of annular photonic crystals on silicon-on-insulator wafers was addressed for the first time. A self-alignment procedure for nanofabrication using atomic layer deposition and sacrificial etching was established to place accurately nanosized dielectric rods in nanosized circular air holes. Avoiding the challenging electron-beam lithography alignment, this method achieves atomic level precision and shows high stability. © 2009 American Vacuum Society.

In the best of circumstances, change detection (CD) is accomplished using measurements from the same instrument and under similar collection circumstances. Complications in the CD process arise when the variability in the collection process is not minimized. Variations between collected images and a lack of precise corresponding ground truth make accurate evaluation of a given CD method imprecise at best. This work leverages synthetic hyperspectral imagery, with known ground truth to include primary and tertiary materials, to investigate the use of common CD algorithms for the hyperspectral CD problem. Specifically, we use synthetic hyperspectral images with different spatial resolutions acquired at different altitudes, thus exhibiting different atmospheric affects. The importance of this work is in definition of a CD taxonomy and using that taxonomy for the accurate evaluation of several CD methods. Results are presented using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve, indicating that, under mildly varying imaging conditions, principal component analysis-based CD outperforms simple image differencing and correlation coefficient-based CD methods.

Raman amplifiers provide a simple and yet powerful platform for optical amplification needs in modern optical communication networks. This paper reviews recent progress in Raman amplifier research and highlights some non-conventional future of the field. Although the low-noise and wavelength-independent gain properties of Raman amplifiers have been long exploited in optical communication networks, researchers strive to tap into the huge potential of non-linear optics to improve reach and performance. Alternative approaches used to enhance the quality of Raman amplified networks such as the use of novel pumping schemes that can ensure uniformity in gain and noise performance are discussed. Finally, the advances in research on Raman amplification in monolithically integrated silicon waveguides which should fuel wide deployment in the coming years are presented.

Automatic face annotation (or tagging) facilitates improved retrieval and organization of personal photos in online social networks. In this paper, we present a new collaborative face recognition (FR) method that aims to improve face annotation accuracy. The proposed method makes efficient use of multiple FR engines and databases that are distributed over an online social network. The performance of our collaborative face recognition method was successfully evaluated using the standard MPEG-7 VCE-3 data set and a set of real-world personal photos from the Web. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated in terms of comparative annotation performance against non-collaborative approaches utilizing a single FR engine and a single database only.

In this paper, power minimization of multi-access multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with rate constraint is studied where the users only have partial channel state information (CSI) obtained through finite-rate feedback. Although the optimal scheme is difficult to obtain, we propose a sub-optimal beamforming scheme where the beamforming vectors are selected by the feedback. The Base station (BS) broadcasts the optimal index of the code vectors in the codebook to the users. With optimal quatization of CSI and only a small number of feedback bits, the required average sum-power is shown to be close to or even smaller than the sub-optimal maximum eigenmode beamforming (MEB) scheme where perfect CSI is known at the users. To simplify the performance analysis, we use a sub-optimal quantization scheme for the proposed beamforming scheme, where the distance between the code vectors and the strongest eigen-channel vectors of the users is minimized. Although the sub-optimal quantization scheme has a higher sum-power than the optimal one, simulation results show that they achieve similar multi-user gain. By letting the feedback bits approach infinity, this sub-optimal quantization scheme becomes the MEB scheme. A closed-form expression for the sum-power of this sub-optimal quantization scheme is estimated by random matrix theory and quantization bounds on Grassmann manifold. The effect of the finite-rate feedback on multi-user gain is then studied using this closed-form expression.

The reference frame theory constitutes an essential aspect of electric machine analysis and control. In this study, apart from the conventional applications, it is reported that the reference frame theory approach (RFTA) can successfully be applied to real time fault diagnosis of electric machinery systems as a powerful tool to find the magnitude and phase quantities of fault signatures with good precision. Although it is possible to run RFTA for each fault signature consecutively, orthogonal PN (Pseudo Noise) code is proposed as an alternative method to detect more than one fault simultaneously. As the physical facts explaining the incipient fault mechanisms are studied for a long time, the motor fault signature frequencies and fault models are very well-known. Therefore, ignoring all other components, the proposed method focuses only on certain fault signatures in the current spectrum depending on the examined motor fault. Broken rotor bar and eccentricity faults are experimentally tested employing the TMS320F2812 digital signal processor (DSP) to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. In this application, only the readily available drive hardware is used without employing additional components such as analog filters, signal conditioning board, external sensors, etc. The motor drive on-board DSP is utilized both for motor control and fault detection purposes providing instantaneous fault information. Being a model independent fault analyzer, this method can be applied to all multi-phase and single phase motors.
