Background: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) comprises biologically and clinically heterogeneous subtypes. Previously, study size has limited the ability to compare and contrast the risk factor profiles among these heterogeneous subtypes. Methods: We pooled individual-level data from 17 471 NHL cases and 23 096 controls in 20 case-control studies from the International Lymphoma Epidemiology Consortium (InterLymph). We estimated the associations, measured as odds ratios, between each of 11 NHL subtypes and self-reported medical history, family history of hematologic malignancy, lifestyle factors, and occupation. We then assessed the heterogeneity of associations by evaluating the variability (Q value) of the estimated odds ratios for a given exposure among subtypes. Finally, we organized the subtypes into a hierarchical tree to identify groups that had similar risk factor profiles. Statistical significance of tree partitions was estimated by permutation-based P values (P_NODE). Results: Risks differed statistically significantly among NHL subtypes for medical history factors (autoimmune diseases, hepatitis C virus seropositivity, eczema, and blood transfusion), family history of leukemia and multiple myeloma, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and certain occupations, whereas generally homogeneous risks among subtypes were observed for family history of NHL, recreational sun exposure, hay fever, allergy, and socioeconomic status. Overall, the greatest difference in risk factors occurred between T-cell and B-cell lymphomas (P_NODE < 1.0 × 10^-4), with increased risks generally restricted to T-cell lymphomas for eczema, T-cell-activating autoimmune diseases, family history of multiple myeloma, and occupation as a painter. We further observed substantial heterogeneity among B-cell lymphomas (P_NODE < 1.0 × 10^-4). The content based image retrieval (CBIR) is aimed to find the most similar images from a collection of images or a database to the query image according to the visual or semantic similarity. Current image retrieval algorithms mainly focus on feature selection and learning distance metric. Other methods are also proposed to promote the performance such as relevance feedback. But as a whole their performance still can not reach the expectation for application. This paper presents a new framework for image retrieval by introducing the hypothesis testing heory. The rest of this paper is organized as follows: Section II introduces the motivation of the proposed approach and the hypothesis testing problem in image retrieval. Section III is the main part of the paper and in this section the concepts of background model, image model, test ratio and feature extraction that compose the framework are introduced and discussed. Section IV shows the relevant experimental results of the algorithm. © 2012 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

In the application of land slide, flood forecast or inflow forecast, the data from the rain intensity is important for the hydrologist and/or geologist to estimate rainfall and amount of water that flows into the interesting area. The tipping bucket rain gauge is widely used especially in the ground-based rainfall measurement. In this paper, we describe behavior of the tipping bucket rain gauge in various rain intensities, from light rain to extreme rain. We also describe the problem that ordinary tipping bucket rain gauge suffer, the calibration and how to improve the accuracy in the lab and its results.

In the recent years, there has been an increasing research into and experience with autonomy and automation of space missions, such as Earth observation, space station operations, planetary robotic exploration and deep space probes. Capabilities of such systems have grown radically, leading to the need of the development of autonomy for the spacecraft and ground systems. One of the possible solutions for the development of autonomous systems is the use of agent-based systems. Put at its simplest, an agent is a computer system that is capable of flexible autonomous action in dynamic, unpredictable, typically multi-agent domain, and that has autonomous characteristics, like autonomy, social ability, reactiviy and proactivity. From the software's point of view, the design of computer programs as multi-agent systems presents a new software engineering paradigm where systems are described as individual problem-solving agents pursuing high-level goals. To support the development of multi-agent systems in other areas of application, many different multi-agent frameworks have been developed in the last decade. These multi-agent frameworks provide infrastructure functionalities allowing agents developers to concentrate on application-dependent issues. In this paper we analyze the results of the use of multiagent frameworks within the DAFA study. DAFA (Distributed Agents For Autonomy) is a study for the European Space Agency in which GMV, the University of Glasgow (UNG) and the Planning and Scheduling Team from the Institute for Cognitive Science and technology of Italian National research Council (ISTC-CNR) have collaborated. The project is aimed to demonstrate the advantages of using distributed agents in a space system. Its objectives can be summarized as follows: 1) demonstrate that agent technology, and in particular distributed agents, can be applied to increase mission performances, and 2) demonstrate a methodology to allow the assessment of the impact of the introduct

In this letter, we present a novel approach of valve stiction detection using wavelet technology. A new non-invasive method is developed with the closed-loop normal operating data. The redundant dyadic discrete wavelet transform is used to decompose the data at different resolution scales. Based on the Lipschitz regularity theory, wavelet coefficients analysis across scales is performed to detect the jumps in the controlled variables. Adaptive wavelet de-noising is then applied to the data. Features of the valve stiction patterns are extracted from the de-noised data and the valve stiction probability is calculated.
