Controlled islanding plays an essential role in preventing the blackout of power *** there are several studies on this topic in the past,no enough attention is paid to the uncertainty brought by renewable energy sources(RESs)that may cause unpredictable unbalanced power and the observabilit>T of power systems after islanding that is essential for back-up black-start ***,a novel controlled islanding model based on mixed-integer second-order cone and chance-constrained programming(MISOCCP)is proposed to address these ***,the uncertainty of RESs is characterized by their possibility distribution models with chance constraints,and the requirements,e.g.,system observability,for rapid back-up black-start measures are also ***,a law of large numbers(LLN)based method is em-ployed for converting the chance constraints into deterministic ones and reformulating the non-convex model into convex ***,case studies on the revised IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus power systems as well as the comparisons among different models are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** results show that the proposed model can result in less unbalanced power and better observability after islanding compared with other models.

In several Machine Learning (ML) clustering and dimensionality reduction approaches, such as nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), RESCAL, and K-Means clustering, users must select a hyper-parameter k to define the number of clusters or components that yield an ideal separation of samples or clean clusters. This selection, while difficult, is crucial to avoid overfitting or underfitting the data. Several ML applications use scoring methods (e.g., Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores) to evaluate the cluster pattern stability for a specific k. The score is calculated for different trials over a range of k, and the ideal k is heuristically selected as the value before the model starts overfitting, indicated by a drop or increase in the score resembling an elbow curve plot. While the grid-search method can be used to accurately find a good k value, visiting a range of k can become time-consuming and computationally resource-intensive. In this paper, we introduce the Binary Bleed method based on binary search, which significantly reduces the k search space for these grid-search ML algorithms by truncating the target k values from the search space using a heuristic with thresholding over the scores. Binary Bleed is designed to work with single-node serial, single-node multi-processing, and distributed computing resources. In our experiments, we demonstrate the reduced search space gain over a naive sequential search of the ideal k and the accuracy of the Binary Bleed in identifying the correct k for NMFk, K-Means pyDNMFk, and pyDRESCALk with Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores. We make our implementation of Binary Bleed for the NMF algorithm available on GitHub. © 2024 IEEE.

Much of human knowledge in cybersecurity is encapsulated within the ever-growing volume of scientific papers. As this textual data continues to expand, the importance of document organization methods becomes increasingly crucial for extracting actionable insights hidden within large text datasets. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) serve as a means to store factual information in a structured manner, providing explicit, interpretable knowledge that includes domain-specific information from the cybersecurity scientific literature. One of the challenges in constructing a KG from scientific literature is the extraction of ontology from unstructured text. In this paper, we address this topic and introduce a method for building a multi-modal KG by extracting structured ontology from scientific papers. We demonstrate this concept in the cybersecurity domain. One modality of the KG represents observable information from the papers, such as the categories in which they were published or the authors. The second modality uncovers latent (hidden) patterns of text extracted through hierarchical and semantic non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), such as named entities, topics or clusters, and keywords. We illustrate this concept by consolidating more than two million scientific papers uploaded to arXiv into the cyber-domain, using hierarchical and semantic NMF, and by building a cyber-domain-specific KG. © 2024 IEEE.

Conductors within a loaded electric machine commonly induce the highest loss. Numerous cooling solutions exist for high-power density electric machine conductors with external water jackets being the most common. The inherent disadvantage of water jacket cooling is the thermal resistance between the conductor and the cooling medium, which reduces the maximum cooling capacity, regardless of the jacket design. This restriction commonly leads designers to implement solutions such as end-turn cooling. The advances in additive manufacturing have unlocked new potential for conductor end-turn cooling. This paper investigates an additively-manufactured conductor with an integrated end-turn heat exchanger. The conductor is based around a Formula Student in-hub motor. This concept utilizes air-cooling and demonstrates a steady-state current density of 11 A/mm2 for a AlSi10Mg end-turn heat-exchanger conductor, without the added mass and complexity of liquid cooling solutions. If copper is used instead of AlSi10Mg, this value increases to approximately 22 A/mm2. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper presents novel sub-harmonic synchronous machines having series or parallel permanent magnet structures on rotors for better performance in terms of greater torque density. The stator of the machines has two sets of three-phase winding, where the additional winding is used to generate sub-harmonic magnetomotive force components for brushless operation. Similar to the stator, the rotor of them uses an additional winding to induce that sub-harmonic component. Rotor also uses a permanent magnet to improve machine performance in series or parallel hybrid structures having conventional or consequent pole permanent magnet structures. In this paper, 4 different rotors, 3 having hybrid excitation, are used and their performance is compared. To validate the performance, a 2D finite element analysis of 8 poles and 48 slots of sub-harmonic synchronous machines is carried out with different rotors. Finally, the wide-speed operation of the proposed machine is discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

At present, there exist some problems in granular clustering methods, such as lack of nonlinear membership description and global optimization of granular data boundaries. To address these issues, in this study, revolving around the parabolic granular data, we propose an overall architecture for parabolic granular modeling and clustering. To begin with, novel coverage and specificity functions are established, and then a parabolic granular data structure is proposed. The fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is used to obtain the numeric prototypes, and then particle swarm optimization (PSO) is introduced to construct the parabolic granular data from the global perspective under the guidance of principle of justifiable granularity (PJG). Combining the advantages of FCM and PSO, we propose the parabolic granular modeling and optimization (PGMO) method. Moreover, we put forward attribute weights and sample weights as well as a distance measure induced by the Gaussian kernel similarity, and then come up with the algorithm of weighted kernel fuzzy clustering for parabolic granularity (WKFC-PG). In addition, the assessment mechanism of parabolic granular clustering is discussed. In summary, we set up an overall architecture including parabolic granular modeling, clustering, and assessment. Finally, comparative experiments on artificial, UCI, and high-dimensional datasets validate that our overall architecture delivers a good improvement over previous strategies. The parameter analysis and time complexity are also given for WKFC-PG. In contrast with related granular clustering algorithms, it is observed that WKFC-PG performs better than other granular clustering algorithms and has superior stability in handling outliers, especially on high-dimensional datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Bus-clamping Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is an effective method to reduce the switching loss in a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). In bus-clamping PWM scheme, the phase legs are switched using high frequency PWM signals for two-third of the line cycle, while for the remaining duration of cycle, the pole voltage is clamped to either positive or negative rail of the DC bus. In PWM operation of a half bridge, a dead-time is applied between the gate signals of complementary switches to ensure safe and reliable operation. However, introduction of dead-time leads to poor power quality, increased Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and variation in actual voltage compared to the intended pole voltage. Moreover, when the bus-clamping technique is used, the PWM has both high frequency switching region and clamped region in a line cycle, and consequently, the undesired effects of dead-time are further aggravated. Therefore, in order to enhance the quality of output voltage, this paper presents a dead-time compensation strategy for a VSI operating with bus-clamping PWM. The proposed method calculates the required compensation term to be added on the modulation signal considering wide range of operating conditions. Additionally, the compensation includes a new strategy for low current conditions near zero-crossing to avoid distortion. The proposed method is verified by simulation and experiments in a three-phase VSI with a switching frequency of 100 kHz and a fundamental frequency of 60Hz. © 2023 IEEE.
