It is a truth universally acknowledged that 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. The emerge of digital media has taken this saying to a complete new level. By using steganography, one can hide not only 1000, but thousands of words even in an average sized image. This article presents various types of techniques used by modern digital steganography, as well as the implementation of the least significant bit (LSB) method. The main objective is to develop an application that uses LSB insertion in order to encode data into a cover image. Both a serial and parallel version are proposed and an analysis of the performances is made using images ranging from 1:9 to 131 megapixels. © 2013 IEEE.

The paper shows a Windows© NT/XP/7 application oriented to learn control skills to process engineers. It is a dynamic simulation based tool with a friendly user interface that contains two sets of diverse process control problems (more than twenty study cases are available). It is possible to study typical control problems as cascade, ratio, selective, override and feedforward control techniques and the tuning, configuration and operation of PID controllers. Additionally, it allows analyzing complex control systems installed in boilers, furnaces, distillation columns or reactors and special industrial control techniques to ensure the process safety. In order to outline the functional features of the tool, one of the simplest modules is shown. To conclude, an overview of the methodology and software used to develop this tool is also outlined. In particular, an object oriented modeling and simulation tool is used to develop the simulation models, a self-developed SCADA is used as graphical user interface and the simulation-SCADA communications are supported by the OPC standard. Finally, it must be remarked that this tool is used successfully in an industrial master of instrumentation and process control. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This work presents an image vectorization application aimed to exploit features found in most of today's modern architectures. Design decisions supported by performance results are presented along with use cases for the proposed solution. We will present the algorithm, the target architectures and threading models, as well as a number of optimization techniques. Finally results of both low power SoC and high performance multicore processors are discussed. © 2013 IEEE.

Analysis of various adaptive feedforward vibration compensation schemes has shown that a strictly positive real (SPR) condition has to be satisfied in order to guarantee the stability of the whole system (Jacobson, Johnson, Cormick, & Sethares, 2001;Landau, Airimiţoaie, & Alma, 2011a;Landau, Alma, & Airimiţoaie, 2011b;Wang & Ren, 1999). Filters have to be implemented in order to satisfy this condition. The problem becomes even more crucial in the presence of the internal mechanical coupling between the compensator system and the reference source (a correlated measurement with the disturbance) since some information is not available when adaptation starts (see Landau et al., 2011b). It is therefore very important to relax the SPR condition at least in the initial phase, and in the same time to improve the adaptation transients. It is shown, in this paper, that adding a proportional adaptation to the standard integral type parametric adaptation, the SPR condition can be relaxed and the adaptation transients are improved. Theoretical developments are enhanced by real time experimental results obtained on an active vibration control (AVC) system. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Road traffic is considered as a complex system organized in a decentralized structure composed of three levels. At the highest level of complexity we have a traffic region, considered as a part of a city's road infrastructure. At the next level, the region is decomposed into traffic objects represented by road sections and intersections. At the last level of complexity we have the road segments that are parts of a road section. The traffic is considered in a macroscopic representation and the modeling for the different components of the road region is achieved by employing techniques from fluid mechanics. The results are verified in simulation, based on traffic data. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel adaptive spiral dynamic algorithm for global optimization. Through a spiral model, spiral dynamic algorithm has a balanced exploration and exploitation strategy. Defining suitable value for the radius and displacement in its spiral model may lead the algorithm to converge with high speed. The dynamic step size produced by the model also allows the algorithm to avoid oscillation around the optimum point. However, for high dimension problems, the algorithm may easily get trapped into local optima. This is due to the incorporation of a constant radius and displacement in the model. In order to solve the problem, a novel adaptive formulation is proposed in this paper by varying the radius and displacement of the spiral model. The proposed algorithm is validated with various dimensions of unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions. Furthermore, it is applied to parameter optimization of an autoregressive with exogenous terms dynamic model of a flexible manipulator system. Comparison with the original spiral dynamic algorithm shows that the proposed algorithm has better accuracy. Moreover, the time domain and frequency domain responses of the flexible manipulator model shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms its predecessor algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper aims to describe two identification methods for Hammerstein systems. Both methods are design to approximate the nonlinear component by using families of simpler functions. The first algorithm combines linear least squares with PSO to approximate both linear and nonlinear component parameters, whilst the latter redesigns the unknown coefficients approximation problem into a nonlinear least squares one and uses a modified version of Gauss-Newton algorithm to solve it. A comparison between the two methods is carried out.

The purpose of this paper is to look back on a long term informal innovative experience carried out during the last nine years until the present one, and try to discern, with a retrospective and a long time vision, whether it has been as beneficial as expected once it has concluded. This experience has taken place in the University College of engineering of Vitoria (Basque Country University, Spain) since the year 2.004, and it has been accomplished in the subject Company Networks of Technical engineering in Management Computing. After the analysis of a number of data collected along these years, we found that we have reached the initial objective of increasing the enrolment in the subject that has driven the project, and other unexpected ones that are more important from a long time point of view. Once that nine years have lapsed and the project is going to be finished, we conclude that it is a very positive experience and we recommend doing the same with the new degrees of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), as we plan.

The current situation of environmental resources requires their efficient usage through efficient process control. But, process control can not be achieved without an essential component: the communication between all devices, such as sensors, controllers, actuators, programming stations etc. The aim is to achieve the irrigation process of plants in greenhouse conditions. Therefore, it is submitted a comprehensive application that proposes to be a distributed control system including data acquisition and processing, both local and remote monitoring of the process parameters. The distributed system is based on modern equipment: Siemens Simatic PLCs and HMI, Memsic e̅Ko Pro wireless sensors network, level sensors for irrigation tanks and actuators such as on/off valves and pumps. In terms of communication between equipments, an industrial bus and protocols were used - Profinet and wireless communication. The software part is provided by TIA Portal with STEP 7 and WinCC flexible RT and LOGO! Soft Comfort for programming the automation devices. ModbusTCP was used to develop the communication protocol between central devices.

The objective of this paper is to describe an ongoing work that we are carrying out in the frame of an educational innovation project supported by the Education Advisory Service of the Vicerectorship for Teaching Quality and Innovation (University of the Basque Country, Spain). The project is driven by means of the subject of Industrial Informatics of the degree of Industrial Electronic engineering and automatics (University College of engineering of Vitoria, Basque Country University, Spain). The design of the project is based on the development of a collaborative work distributed among all the students of the subject, grouped in several teams or working groups. The work developed by each of those groups is complementary, and when all these parts of work are finished, all of them will fit together. The conclusion reached until this moment through the continuous tracking of the students is that there is an increased and more active attendance. Besides, the results reached by the students in different evaluations have improved those reached by means of the traditional paradigm of learning.
