In this paper a backstepping controller for a nonlinear, MIMO HVAC system is introduced. Feedback linearization method with introduction of a feedback of states and disturbances is used for the purposes of disturbance decoupling and nonlinear model linearization. The backstepping controller is applied to the linearized model of the system. It is shown that by this method, heat and moisture loads can be compensated, considering them as measurable disturbances. In this way the system can adapt itself to load variations fast and without any offset. Finally the simulation results are brought to show the ability of the method to present a controller with high disturbance decoupling and good tracking properties.

The paper presents an intelligent predictive control to govern the dynamics of a solar power plant system. This system is a highly nonlinear process; therefore, a nonlinear predictive method, e.g., neuro-fuzzy predictive control, can be a better match to govern the system dynamics. In our proposed method, a neuro-fuzzy model identifies the future behavior of the systems over a certain prediction horizon while an optimizer algorithm based on EP determines the input sequence. The first value of this sequence is applied to the plant. Using the proposed intelligent predictive controller, the performance of outlet temperature tracking problem in a solar power plant is investigated. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a neural network-based predictive controller is designed to govern the dynamics of heat exchanger process. Heat exchanger is a highly nonlinear process; therefore, a nonlinear prediction method can be a better match in a predictive control strategy. Advantages of neural networks for the process modeling are studied and a neural network based predictor is designed, trained and tested as a part of the predictive controller. The neuro predictive controller is utilized in setpoint tracking of a heat exchanger plant. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with that of Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) through simulation studies. Obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

The paper presents the design of fuzzy sliding mode control based on genetic algorithms. An optimal design criterion is not required in the design of a fuzzy sliding mode control. Therefore, we design a fuzzy sliding mode controller for the general nonlinear control systems as an optimization problem and apply the optimal searching algorithms and genetic algorithms to find the optimal rules and membership functions of the controller. The proposed approach has the merit to determine the optimal structure and the inference rules of fuzzy siding mode controller simultaneously. Using the proposed approach, the tracking problem of two-degree-of-freedom rigid robot manipulator is studied. Simulation results of the close-loop system with the proposed controller based on genetic algorithms show the effectiveness of the approach.

This paper introduces robust control architecture for nonholonomic mobile robots. The proposed technique linearizes and decouples the nonlinear and coupled dynamic equations of the robot by computed torque approach. Since the computed torque technique requires the exact knowledge of the corresponding nonlinear dynamics, therefore, any mismatch in this regard may leave some nonlinear and also uncertain parts in the resulting system. The effect of mentioned parts may be compensated via a robust controller. As a result, in the present work, the remaining uncertainty is compensated by the H/sub /spl infin// technique, which requires the boundedness of the uncertain part. It is shown that the elements of the said uncertainty are L/sub 2/ -bounded. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed H/sub /spl infin// based robust control scheme.

This paper, presents a traction control algorithm for an electric vehicle (EV) with four separate wheel drives. This algorithm is necessary to improve the handling and stability of EV during cornering or under slippery road condition. It distributes the traction power among four drives and especially an independent torque reference on each wheel. The proposed algorithm is implemented in terms of a hierarchical architecture, which incorporates all new known vehicle systems ABS (anti-lock brake system), ASR (anti slip regulation), ESP (electronic stability program). To achieve good performances, a robust sliding mode control strategy is implemented. Several simulation results, which show the potential of such an algorithm, are presented.

Images are often contaminated by impulse noise. The major drawback of median filtering and its variants - that are widely used for removing impulsive noise - is the blurring effect for large window sizes and low noise suppression for small window sizes. In this paper, an algorithm for removing impulse noise in images is proposed. The long-range correlation information in a competitive scheme is utilized to find the gray level of degraded pixels. The experimental results show that the performance of our method in removing impulse noise is better than that of most other state-of-the-art methods.

Informal presentations are a lightweight means for fast and convenient communication of ideas. People communicate their ideas to others on paper and whiteboards, which afford fluid sketching of graphs, words and other expressive symbols. Unlike existing authoring tools that are designed for formal presentations, we created SketchPoint to help presenters design informal presentations via freeform sketching. In SketchPoint, presenters can quickly author presentations by sketching slide content, overall hierarchical structures and hyperlinks. To facilitate the transition from idea capture to communication, a note-taking workspace was built for accumulating ideas and sketching presentation outlines. Informal feedback showed that SketchPoint is a promising tool for idea communication. Copyright 2003 ACM.

This paper reports on a successful determination of the train travel schedule parameters for a rail system based on limited data, and thus provides a verification of the ASCAP, a rail system simulator developed at the center of Rail Safety-Critical excellence at the University of Virginia. The train system considered is a corridor encompassing a territory of over 127 miles. It is divided into 37 train speed zones, with 9 sidings. The only data available are the actual trip times of 171 trains dispatched over a period of 14 days. The problem of determining the 37 train-zone-average-speeds and 9 siding delay times was formulated as a constrained optimization problem. The cost to be minimized is the cumulated errors between the actual train trip times and the ASCAP simulated trip times resulting from a particular set of train-zone-average-speeds and siding delay times. The constraints include allowable siding delays, permissible train-zone-average-speeds and prohibition of southbound trains from entering the sidings. This large scale nonlinear optimization problem was then solved by a genetic algorithm developed by the authors and referred to as the intelligent genetic algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

At the 2001 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining in San Jose, California,on November 29 to December 2, 2001, there was a panel discussion on how datamining research meets practical development. One of the motivations for organizing thepanel discussion was to provide useful advice for industrial people to explore their directionsin data mining development. Based on the panel discussion, this paper presentsthe views and arguments from the panel members, the Conference Chair and the ProgramCommittee Co-Chairs. These people as a group have both academic and industrialexperiences in different data mining related areas such as databases, machine learning,and neural networks.
