Reusing Egyptian in-situ construction &demolition waste(CDW)to produce sustainable *** of compressive &bond strengths using steel & glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP)rebars

This research paper presents the effect of using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), from the Egyptian construction waste, in different proportions on the bond performance between concrete and its internal reinforcement, where two types of reinforcement were used: a- steel reinforcing bars, and b- glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. 72 samples of concrete were prepared and tested with replacement ratios for natural aggregate (NA) with RCA: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 %. The samples were divided into 150 mm cubes to conduct axial compression tests, and pull-out samples to investigate the effect of replacement ratios on the bond between concrete with steel and GFRP rebars. Results showed that concrete loses 26% of its compressive strength after replacing NA with 100% RCA. The results of the pull-out test for steel samples showed 30% higher bonding than GFRP samples. A slight decrease in bond was observed between the control and the tested samples, where the steel and GFRP samples showed a decrease of 5% and 9%, respectively, over the control samples for each, at a replacement percentage of 100%. It was also clear that the steel reinforcement bars had a stronger bond with the concrete, and this can be attributed to the stronger mechanical interlocking of the steel ribs than their counterparts in the GFRP. Failure patterns showed the crushing of concrete with steel bars, in contrast to the GFRP bars, which showed slipping from within the concrete with failure of the ribs in many samples. © 2024 The Author(s). Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are essential structural components in buildings and infrastructure, providing vertical load support and stability. However, these columns can be degraded over time due to various factors, such as environmental exposure, seismic events, and increased loading demands. As a result, the need for effective and reliable column-strengthening techniques arises to ensure the safety, durability, and longevity of structures. The main objective of this study is to investigate how fully strengthening damaged columns affects load-bearing capacity and overall structural performance. Moreover, this study tested 13 reinforced concrete columns during the experimental program. The original dimensions of these columns were 150 × 150 * 1200 mm. One specimen served as a control, while the remaining 12 underwent strengthening and enlarged to be (250 × 250 * 1200) mm. These specimens varied in stirrup spacing, reinforcing materials such as glass fiber and steel rebar, and different concrete’s compressive strengths. The results revealed that the load increasing ratio values were increased from 2.87 to 4.13 times of the reference specimen. The failure pattern was changed from brittle failure to ductile failure. Both stress-strain behavior and axial load deformation were enhanced. The ductility was increased from twice to six times the value of the reference specimen. On the other hand, the designed proposal was compared with standard codes (ECP 203–2020 and Eurocode 4). Strengthening RC columns using steel jackets and filling with various concrete’s compressive strengths enhanced their durability, stiffness, and performance under eccentric loads. © 2025 The Author(s). Reclaiming urban lost spaces around elevated urban linkages: the case of El Sawy Cultural Wheel, Egypt

In recent times, elevated urban linkages (EULs) have emerged as crucial components of urban development, cutting through the cities’ urban fabric to accommodate the rapid expansion of urban cores and to facilitate traffic flow. However, these massive infrastructures have inadvertently given rise to urban lost spaces—vacant, inefficient areas within the urban fabric. Recognizing these lost spaces as untapped public assets, the paper explores sustainable development strategies to reclaim them into the urban fabric, transforming them into vibrant, multi-functional public spaces. The paper aims to achieve a set of urban design guidelines for rehabilitation design interventions which will be deduced into a comprehensive framework. This framework encompasses criteria for selecting appropriate approaches and types of rehabilitation design interventions, as well as design principles ensuring the desirability of the reclaimed space. The paper applies this framework to assess the El Sawy Cultural Wheel in Egypt, revealing it as a successful example of a reclaimed space. While positive aspects of rehabilitation design interventions are evident in terms of the approach and type of intervention in this case study, there are identified areas with shortcomings in fully implementing the design principles, if enhanced, could elevate the overall quality of the reclaimed space. © The Author(s) 2024.

Gamification in architecture: is Egypt’s real estate ready for interactive design?

Seeking an Egyptian real estate industry receptive to real-time interactive design, this study departs from static 3D renders to enhance user engagement. Advanced interactive design walkthrough prototypes, integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM), were presented to Cairo developers. A mixed methods approach of surveys and interviews analyzed their acceptance, uncovering the strengths and weaknesses of real-time interactive design implementation. Findings revealed the need for the industry to embrace virtual reality (VR) technologies for improved user participation. While concerns exist, developers recognize the potential of VR tools, particularly Unreal Engine, for engaging presentations. The increasing reliance on digital solutions in real estate highlights the importance of interactive and immersive technologies in enhancing user experiences. By bridging the gap between traditional architectural visualization techniques and emerging digital innovations, this study emphasizes the transformative potential of real-time interactive design. It also situates VR and BIM as pivotal tools in reshaping architectural communication, allowing stakeholders to explore and experience spaces before construction. The study offers a valuable foundation for exploring real-time interactive design’s potential in architectural gamification and project visualization. This original research introduces real-time interactive design through VR for the Egyptian real estate market, triggering the concept of architectural gamification. It promotes user engagement through interactive designs and bridges the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of interactive design. © 2025 The Author(s). Urban heritage sites encounter significant issues in reconciling preservation, tourism development, and the requirements of local communities. The archaeological district of the Giza Pyramids illustrates this dilemma;as rapid urbanization has profoundly affected a culturally valuable worldwide site. The adjacent neighborhoods of PYRAMIDS GARDENS, KAFR EL GABAL, KAFR GHATATY, and NAZLET EL SEMAN have increasingly altered the historical landscape, exerting a significant burden on archaeological resources and tourism prospects. The study proposes a thorough urban tourist development strategy for the Giza Pyramids area, incorporating innovative methodologies to tackle significant problems, it examines sustainable development solutions that reflect cultural heritage while improving visitor experiences and enhancing local community resilience through the integration of quantitative site analysis and comprehensive qualitative research,with mixed-methods research utilized comprehensive spatial analysis, encompassing detailed site surveys, land use mapping, and demographic studies, enhanced by significant community involvement, conducting Questionnaires and interviews with 124 participants, including residents, tourists, urban planning specialists, and local stakeholders, to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the district's diverse dynamics. The research presents an innovative "astronomical urbanism" framework, reconsidering ancient Egyptian astronomical concepts as a modern urban planning strategy. This approach seeks to establish a sustainable tourism area that maintains cultural integrity, fosters local economic growth, and provides an immersive historical experience focused on the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The results include an established master plan that aligns archaeological conservation, urban revitalization, and community integration, providing a possible framework for heritage-conscious urban development in complex historical contexts. ©

Performance analysis of a sustainable green ammonia production system driven by a solar spectrum-beam-splitting technology

Intermittent solar irradiance and inefficient solar-to-ammonia conversion challenge efficient green ammonia production. This study investigates the integration of a novel spectral beam-splitting concentrated photovoltaic/thermal (SBS-CPVT) model, an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), and thermal energy storage for sustainable ammonia production while supplying excess electricity and heat. This system splits the solar spectrum, using short wavelengths for PV electricity and long wavelengths for heat. High-grade heat drives the ORC, while lower-grade heat preheats water for the electrolyzer. Electricity powers the electrolyzer and air separation unit, producing hydrogen and nitrogen for ammonia synthesis. A comprehensive mathematical model is developed and validated to ensure reliable simulation of all components. The impact of key design parameters is analyzed to assess their influence on overall power performance under various climatic conditions. The findings indicate that this system achieves an overall SBS-CPVT efficiency of 84.2 % with Dowtherm as the optimal heat transfer fluid and an ORC thermal efficiency of 24 % using Toluene as the best working fluid. In warmer climates, it attains a solar-to-ammonia efficiency of 11.07 %, with a specific electricity consumption of 9.42 kWele/kgNH3 and a specific thermal consumption of 5.07 kWth/kgNH3. The SBS-CPVT system's specific solar consumption of 64.52 kWsolar/kgNH3 is less than half that of a stand-alone PV system, which is 145.82 kWsolar/kgNH3, highlighting the superior efficiency of this integrated approach. This study demonstrates the system's efficiency for solar-driven ammonia production, with future work focusing on techno-economic and exergy analyses for optimization. © 2025 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

There are many operational and technical obstacles in the way of the shift to a decentralized, sustainable smart grid. In the face of growing renewable energy integration, distributed resources, and cyber threats, traditional grid management techniques are ill-suited to handle the real-time optimization, predictive analytics, and autonomous control necessary for dependable and efficient electricity delivery. This study thoroughly analyzes how artificial intelligence (AI) approaches can be used to address the main problems that smart grid systems face. The paper looks at how cutting-edge AI techniques, such as multi-agent systems, deep learning, machine learning, and optimization algorithms, can be used in important smart grid applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Impact pile driving is an interesting technique for the construction of deep foundations from a practical and economical point of ***,the generalization of this technique can be restricted due to the excessive vibration levels that can be generated,which can be especially problematic in residential ***,different mitigation measures can be applied to prevent excessive vibration levels inside buildings located near construction *** compare its efficiency through a numerical prediction tool,two experimental test sites are first presented and *** the results obtained,it was found that the construction of an open trench near the impact source can be used as an efficient mitigation measure to reduce the maximum vibration levels evaluated in this study.

Gamification is the incorporation of game elements into non-game settings. Software designers increase user motivation by introducing adequately engaging elements, such as leaderboards and badges, into an existing system. In recent years, few studies have examined the risks associated with gamification inside the business systems sector, especially within software development organizations. Yet, this issue must be addressed more systematically to build gamified solutions that take individual gamification risks into account. This research introduces "Inclusive Gamification" as contextually aware gamification that highlights individual risks. The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to identify the gamification risk factors that could cause the emergence of risks in software development organizations;and 2) to develop a list of risks with consideration of various contextual factors, namely tasks, personality type, adopted game element, and organizational cultural aspects. 15 employees from three software development companies participated in an exploratory study in which their perspectives on the negative effects of gamification were collected. As a result, we were able to identify several risk factors and associated risks. Our findings assist software engineers throughout the design process in identifying potential threats. Thus, create gamified solutions that better situate employees at their workplaces. © 2023 Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School. All rights reserved.

Control moment gyroscopes(CMGs) are a favorable choice for spacecraft attitude control systems thanks to their torque amplification capability. However, their performance is hindered by geometric singularities, which can severely limit control capabilities during attitude maneuvers. This paper proposes a hybrid attitude control system incorporating a single reaction wheel into the standard minimum redundant four-CMG pyramid configuration, providing an additional degree-of-freedom to avoid and escape singularities effectively. A comprehensive mathematical analysis of the system's Jacobian matrix,using row echelon form, is performed alongside a geometrical analysis of the hybrid configuration's momentum envelope. These analyses demonstrate the reflection of a reaction wheel inclusion into the system of four CMGs in the improvement of the system's capacity to avoid/escape singularity. Additionally, an asymptotic control law and an adapted steering law are developed to optimize control performance. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid system is validated through simulation, which includes a comparative analysis with traditional CMG-only system. The results highlight the superiority of the hybrid system in handling singularities.
