The capability of the proper orthogonal decomposition for the simulation of heat transfer in building components is investigated via three applications: linear heat transfer (not coupled to mass transfer), mildly non-linear heat transfer (coupled to air and moisture transfer (hygroscopic)) and highly non-linear heat transfer (coupled to moisture transfer (capillary)). It is shown that increasing non-linearity leads to an increasing number of required construction modes. To further investigate the reason for this degrading performance of POD, the singular values' decay progress from the different training snapshots is addressed in this paper. The results confirm that a fast decay of the singular values implies a high interrelation of the snapshots and a better performance of the POD method. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Many complex systems involve direct interactions among more than two entities and can be represented by hypergraphs, in which hyperedges encode higher-order interactions among an arbitrary number of nodes. To analyze structures and dynamics of given hypergraphs, a solid practice is to compare them with those for randomized hypergraphs that preserve some specific properties of the original hypergraphs. In the present study, we propose a family of such reference models for hypergraphs, called the hyper dk-series, by extending the so-called dk-series for dyadic networks to the case of hypergraphs. The hyper dk-series preserves up to the individual node’s degree, node’s degree correlation, node’s redundancy coefficient, and/or the hyperedge’s size depending on the parameter values. Furthermore, we numerically find that higher-order hyper dk-series more accurately preserves the shortest path length and degree distribution of the one-mode projection of the original hypergraph, which the method does not intend to preserve. We also apply the hyper dk-series to numerical simulations of epidemic spreading and evolutionary game dynamics on empirical social hypergraphs. We find that the hyperedge’s size affects these dynamics more than any of the node’s properties and that the node’s degree correlation and redundancy in the empirical hypergraphs promote cooperation. Dimension reduction techniques for dynamical systems on networks are considered to promote our understanding of the original high-dimensional dynamics. One strategy of dimension reduction is to derive a low-dimensional dynamical system whose behavior approximates the observables of the original dynamical system that are weighted linear summations of the state variables at the different nodes. Recently proposed methods use the leading eigenvector of the adjacency matrix of the network as the mixture weights to obtain such observables. In the present study, we explore performances of this type of one-dimensional reductions of dynamical systems on networks when we use non-leading eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix as the mixture weights. Our theory predicts that non-leading eigenvectors can be more efficient than the leading eigenvector and enables us to select the eigenvector minimizing the error. We numerically verify that the optimal non-leading eigenvector outperforms the leading eigenvector for some dynamical systems and networks. We also argue that, despite our theory, it is practically better to use the leading eigenvector as the mixture weights to avoid misplacing the bifurcation point too distantly and to be resistant against dynamical noise. © 2022, CC BY.

Population structure has been known to substantially affect evolutionary dynamics. Networks that promote the spreading of fitter mutants are called amplifiers of selection, and those that suppress the spreading of fitter mutants are called suppressors of selection. Research in the past two decades has found various families of amplifiers while suppressors still remain somewhat elusive. It has also been discovered that most networks are amplifiers of selection under the birth-death updating combined with uniform initialization, which is a standard condition assumed widely in the literature. In the present study, we extend the birth-death processes to temporal (i.e., time-varying) networks. For the sake of tractability, we restrict ourselves to switching temporal networks, in which the network structure deterministically alternates between two static networks at constant time intervals or stochastically in a Markovian manner. We show that, in a majority of cases, switching networks are less amplifying than both of the two static networks constituting the switching networks. Furthermore, most small switching networks, i.e., networks on six nodes or less, are suppressors, which contrasts to the case of static networks. © 2023, CC BY.

We study finite-size effects on the convergence time in a continuous-opinion dynamics model. In the model, each individual's opinion is represented by a real number on a finite interval, e.g., [0,1], and a uniformly randomly chosen individual updates its opinion by partially mimicking the opinion of a uniformly randomly chosen neighbor. We numerically find that the characteristic time to the convergence increases as the system size increases according to a particular functional form in the case of lattice networks. In contrast, unless the individuals perfectly copy the opinion of their neighbors in each opinion updating, the convergence time is approximately independent of the system size in the case of regular random graphs, uncorrelated scale-free networks, and complete graphs. We also provide a mean-field analysis of the model to understand the case of the complete graph.

Trusting others and reciprocating the received trust with trustworthy actions are fundaments of economic and social interactions. The trust game (TG) is widely used for studying trust and trustworthiness and entails a sequential interaction between two players, an investor and a trustee. It requires at least two strategies or options for an investor (e.g. to trust versus not to trust a trustee). According to the evolutionary game theory, the antisocial strategies (e.g. not to trust) evolve such that the investor and trustee end up with lower payoffs than those that they would get with the prosocial strategies (e.g. to trust). A generalisation of the TG to a multiplayer (i.e. more than two players) TG was recently proposed. However, its outcomes hinge upon two assumptions that various real situations may substantially deviate from: (i) investors are forced to trust trustees and (ii) investors can turn into trustees by imitation and vice versa. We propose an asymmetric multiplayer TG that allows investors not to trust and prohibits the imitation between players of different roles;instead, investors learn from other investors and the same for trustees. We show that the evolutionary game dynamics of the proposed TG qualitatively depends on the nonlinearity of the payoff function and the amount of incentives collected from and distributed to players through an institution. We also show that incentives given to trustees can be useful and sufficient to cost-effectively promote trust and trustworthiness among self-interested players. © 2023, CC BY.

Recurrence in the evolution of air transport networks

Changes in air transport networks over time may be induced by competition among carriers, changes in regulations on airline industry, and socioeconomic events such as terrorist attacks and epidemic outbreaks. Such network changes may reflect corporate strategies of each carrier. In the present study, we propose a framework for analyzing evolution patterns in temporal networks in discrete time from the viewpoint of recurrence. Recurrence implies that the network structure returns to one relatively close to that in the past. We applied the proposed methods to four major carriers in the US from 1987 to 2019. We found that the carriers were different in terms of the autocorrelation, strength of periodicity, and changes in these quantities across decades. We also found that the network structure of the individual carriers abruptly changes from time to time. Such a network change reflects changes in their operation at their hub airports rather than famous socioeconomic events that look closely related to airline industry. The proposed methods are expected to be useful for revealing, for example, evolution of airline alliances and responses to natural disasters or infectious diseases, as well as characterizing evolution of social, biological, and other networks over time. Understanding the dynamics of financial transactions among people is critically important for various applications such as fraud detection. One important aspect of financial transaction networks is temporality. The order and repetition of transactions can offer new insights when considered within the graph structure. Temporal motifs, defined as a set of nodes that interact with each other in a short time period, are a promising tool in this context. In this work, we study three unique temporal financial networks: transactions in Mercari, an online marketplace, payments in a synthetic network generated by J.P. Morgan Chase, and payments and friendships among Venmo users. We consider the fraud detection problem on the Mercari and J.P. Morgan Chase networks, for which the ground truth is available. We show that temporal motifs offer superior performance than a previous method that considers simple graph features. For the Venmo network, we investigate the interplay between financial and social relations on three tasks: friendship prediction, vendor identification, and analysis of temporal cycles. For friendship prediction, temporal motifs yield better results than general heuristics, such as Jaccard and Adamic-Adar measures. We are also able to identify vendors with high accuracy and observe interesting patterns in rare motifs, like temporal cycles. We believe that the analysis, datasets, and lessons from this work will be beneficial for future research on financial transaction networks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hypergraphs have been a useful tool for analyzing population dynamics such as opinion formation and the public goods game occurring in overlapping groups of individuals. In the present study, we propose and analyze evolutionary dynamics on hypergraphs, in which each node takes one of the two types of different but constant fitness values. For the corresponding dynamics on conventional networks, under the birth-death process and uniform initial conditions, most networks are known to be amplifiers of natural selection;amplifiers by definition enhance the difference in the strength of the two competing types in terms of the probability that the mutant type fixates in the population. In contrast, we provide strong computational evidence that a majority of hypergraphs are suppressors of selection under the same conditions by combining theoretical and numerical analyses. We also show that this suppressing effect is not explained by one-mode projection, which is a standard method for expressing hypergraph data as a conventional network. Our results suggest that the modeling framework for structured populations in addition to the specific network structure is an important determinant of evolutionary dynamics, paving a way to studying fixation dynamics on higher-order networks including hypergraphs.
