The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is a population-based metaheuristics in which the individuals communicate through decentralized networks. The network can be of many forms but traditionally its structure is predetermined and remains fixed during the search. This paper investigates an alternative approach. The particles are positioned on a 2-dimensional grid of nodes. During the run, they move through the network according to simple rules, while interacting with each other using signs that they leave on the nodes. The links between the particles – and consequently the information flow – are then defined at each time step by the position of the particle on the grid. As a result, each particle’s set of neighbors and connectivity degree varies during the search progress. The particles can move randomly or instead track signs left by other particles on the grid. In this paper, after a formal description of the general model, two different strategies (random and sign-based) are tested and compared to standard topologies on unimodal and multimodal functions, including a rotated and a shifted function with noise from the CEC benchmark. The experiments demonstrate that the dynamics provided by the proposed structure results in a more consistent and stable performance throughout the test set. This article proposes new analysis methods for complex manufacturing systems as part of the scenario research methodology of complex systems developed by the authors. A new concept of modeling of complex systems’ vulnerability is suggested. A method for analyzing of crisis situations in behavior of complex manufacturing systems, including distributed systems is developed. A concept for determining complex systems’ vulnerabilities is suggested. The strategic development model of PJSC "Gazprom" was considered. Scenario calculations of model behavior were conducted. The major vulnerability factors in the structural organization of the Company were revealed. © 2016

With growing urban populations, the World Health Organization has highlighted the importance of urban design for everyone. It is widely recognized that quality of life in the urban environment could be improved through participatory design that includes the active involvement of diverse citizens. Technologies can offer potential tools for such inclusive engagement, however, working together across disciplines and expertise presents key challenges. The design and infrastructure of cities is inherently complex and requires attention to inclusion, translation, sharing and communicating information in effective and constructive ways across diverse constituencies. This workshop intends to bring together a multi-disciplinary community of researchers and designers who are investigating theories, practices, methodologies and technologies of the city;how we live in and (re)adapt them to changing needs together with citizens. This includes technologies that support collecting data on, representing and sharing aspects of urban environments and experiences, architectural envisioning, grass-roots civic engagement, local government planning, activism and creative practice. Our aim is to map a multi-disciplinary agenda for the future of urban HCI.

The development of renewable energy technologies is an inevitable requirement to cope with environmental, economic and political challenges. Solar energy is regarded as one of the most promising types among renewable energy sources. So, the characterization of solar parameters is a significant process in solar energy installations. In this paper, we use three different curve fitting methods called Fourier, sum of sines and smoothing spline in order to model global solar radiation and air temperature parameters at 10-min intervals over a month. In the stage of accuracy comparison, we computed the coefficient of determination (R~2) and the root mean squared error (RMSE) for the mentioned methods. In consequence, the smoothing spline model leads to the best modeling results.

Collaborative learning activities have shown to be useful to address educational processes in several contexts. Monitoring these activities is mandatory to determine the quality of the collaboration and learning processes. Recent research works propose using Social Network Analysis techniques to understand students' collaboration learning process during these experiences. Aligned with that, this paper proposes the use of the indirect blockmodeling network analytic technique for monitoring the behaviour of different social roles played by students in collaborative learning scenarios. The usefulness of this technique was evaluated through a study that analysed the students' interaction network in a collaborative learning activity. Particularly, we tried to understand the structure of the interaction network during that process. Preliminary results suggest that indirect blockmodeling is highly useful for inferring and analysing the students' social roles, when the behaviour of roles are clearly different among them. This technique can be used as a monitoring service that can be embedded in collaborative learning applications.

An anomalous flux of neutrinos produced in hypothetical annihilations or decays of dark matter inside a source would produce a signal observable with neutrino telescopes. As suggested by observations, a conspicuous amount of dark matter is believed to accumulate in the centre of our Galaxy, which is in neat visibility for the Mediterranean underwater telescopes ANTARES and KM3NeT. Searches have been conducted with a maximum likelihood method to identify the presence of a dark matter signature in the neutrino flux measured by ANTARES. Results of all-flavour searches for WIMPs with masses from 50 GeV/c2 up to 100 TeV/c2 over the whole operation period from 2007 to 2020 are presented here. Alternative scenarios which propose a dark matter candidate in the heavy sector extensions of the Standard Model would produce a clear signature in the ANTARES telescope, that can exploit its view of the Galactic Centre up to high energies. The presentation of Galactic Centre searches is completed with ongoing analyses and future potential of the KM3NeT telescope, in phased construction in the Mediterranean Sea. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

With the rapid growth of bandwidth-intensive applications, Carrier Aggregation (CA) has been introduced in Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Networks to provide higher data rates. In this paper, we investigate the joint resource block allocation and link adaptation problem with CA in LTE-A dwonlink. The problem is formulated as an Integer Programming problem aimed at maximizing the cell throughtput while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) of each User Equipment (UE), in the form of the minimum transmission rate. We also consider the proportional fairness of radio allocation among UEs. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose an efficient algorithm QA-PFRA. QA-PFRA consists of two phases. In the first one we assign radio resource to UEs successively for QoS requirements according to UEs' priority, and in the second one we assign CCs to other UEs to maximize the cell weighted throughput. We develop a simulator to evaluate the performance of QA-PFRA. For comparison, we also implement GA algorithm and ERAA algorithm. It is found that the cell throughput obtained by QA-PFRA is about 70 higher than that obtained by ERAA, and QA-PFRA can also achieve higher throughput compared with GA when the UEs are sparsely distributed in the cell. Furthermore, we can observe that Jain's fairness index obtained by QA-PFRA is about 10 higher than that obtained by GA and 40 higher than that obtained by ERAA. © 2016 IEEE.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array and the KM3NeT neutrino telescopes are major upcoming facilities in the fields of γ-ray and neutrino astronomy, respectively. Possible simultaneous production of γ rays and neutrinos in astrophysical accelerators of cosmic-ray nuclei motivates a combination of their data. We assess the potential of a combined analysis of CTA and KM3NeT data to determine the contribution of hadronic emission processes in known Galactic γ-ray emitters, comparing this result to the cases of two separate analyses. In doing so, we demonstrate the capability of GAMMAPY, an open-source software package for the analysis of γ-ray data, to also process data from neutrino telescopes. For a selection of prototypical γ-ray sources within our Galaxy, we obtain models for primary proton and electron spectra in the hadronic and leptonic emission scenario, respectively, by fitting published γ-ray spectra. Using these models and instrument response functions for both detectors, we employ the GAMMAPY package to generate pseudo data sets, where we assume 200 hours of CTA observations and 10 years of KM3NeT detector operation. We then apply a three-dimensional binned likelihood analysis to these data sets, separately for each instrument and jointly for both. We find that the largest benefit of the combined analysis lies in the possibility of a consistent modelling of the γ-ray and neutrino emission. Assuming a purely leptonic scenario as input, we obtain, for the most favourable source, an average expected 68% credible interval that constrains the contribution of hadronic processes to the observed γ-ray emission to below 15%. © 2023, CC BY.

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building and operating two deep sea neutrino telescopes at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The telescopes consist of latices of photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres, called digital optical modules and arranged in vertical detection units. The two main scientific goals are the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the discovery and observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe. Neutrinos are detected via the Cherenkov light, which is induced by charged particles originated in neutrino interactions. The photomultiplier tubes convert the Cherenkov light into electrical signals that are acquired and timestamped by the acquisition electronics. Each optical module houses the acquisition electronics for collecting and timestamping the photomultiplier signals with one nanosecond accuracy. Once finished, the two telescopes will have installed more than six thousand optical acquisition nodes, completing one of the more complex networks in the world in terms of operation and synchronization. The embedded software running in the acquisition nodes has been designed to provide a framework that will operate with different hardware versions and functionalities. The hardware will not be accessible once in operation, which complicates the embedded software architecture. The embedded software provides a set of tools to facilitate remote manageability of the deployed hardware, including safe reconfiguration of the firmware.
