We propose an efficient physics-based method for dexterous `real hand' - `virtual object' interaction in Virtual Reality environments. Our method is based on the Coulomb friction model, and we show how to efficiently implement it in a commodity VR engine for realtime performance. This model enables very convincing simulations of many types of actions such as pushing, pulling, grasping, or even dexterous manipulations such as spinning objects between fingers without restrictions on the objects' shapes or hand poses. Because it is an analytic model, we do not require any prerecorded data, in contrast to previous methods. For the evaluation of our method, we conduction a pilot study that shows that our method is perceived more realistic and natural, and allows for more diverse interactions. Further, we evaluate the computational complexity of our method to show real-time performance in VR environments.

The problem of digital images distortion is considered in the article. Authors investigated the factors that influence on digital image aberrations. These appear mainly due to the optical system errors. The image acquisition conditions were investigated as well. To determine values of distortion as a test object square grid is used. The focus distance of camera affects on distortion value. To determine the value of distortion the program has been developed. Using this program it was found out that for every camera the optimal focus distance with minimal distortion can be determined. The distortions correction techniques are developed on base of well-known image processing methods and on methods worked out by the authors. To find coordinates of grid nodes authors worked out the technique using information of the central part of test object’s image. The common case of mutual position of camera lens and object plane is solved using method of projective geometry based on the harmonic properties of the full quadrangle. When they are parallel to each other, coordinates of nodes are determined using method of line detection developed by authors.

Statics is a backbone course for several engineering disciplines and also a pre-requisite for dynamics and mechanics of materials. Researchers have identified a lack of understanding of statics as a significant source of difficulties in terms of both conceptual understanding, representation of free body diagrams (FBD) and problem-solving ability. Our approach to improve the learning of the concept of friction focuses on students' understanding of acting forces and specific components of such forces of a system. The presented quasi-experimental study investigates how the use of visuo-haptic simulations can improve students understanding and use of FBD. Specifically, we compared two visuo-haptic simulations; one that explicitly visually depicts FBD of multiple objects interacting with different surfaces, while the other only provides haptic feedback while students engage in the same forms of interaction. Our results suggest that using the visuo-haptic simulator with FBD leads to better learning results. These findings support the hypothesis that appropriately sequenced visuo-haptic simulators with well-designed visual cues can help students to better understand and use FBD.
