In this paper, we introduce a mean value analysis based methodology for performance evaluation of transactions executed in a multi server distributed system. We first present probabilistic arguments to investigate under which conditions MVA models provide worst case response times, without large overshoots. Then, we show how to characterize the distributed server system so as to construct a model to predict response times as well as estimate system capacity. Finally, we exemplify the methodology usage via transactions implemented in two distributed Linux systems.

In a multihop wireless network (MWN), access points (APs) in an MWN should provide high reliability to improve network availability. However, APs do not always work well. An AP may stop functioning due to a power outage or may malfunction for various reasons, including malicious attacks. To maintain MWN availability, the network should work autonomously to treat unreliable APs appropriately. In this paper, we propose an AP evaluation system in which each AP attempts to evaluate neighboring APs in collaboration with other APs that are neighbors of the target. Furthermore, each AP exchanges its evaluation result with other APs and attempts to use the result to control the MWN. We evaluate our proposed scheme using simulations to confirm its effectiveness.

The paper is focused on how to carry out adaptive human-computer interaction when task-related functional demotion of resources caused by resource degradation in system. Through the analysis of the issue of resource degradation about embedded devices, the paper introduces two kinds of means to identify degradation and propose a scheme of adaptive interaction for device degradation on the basis of the theory of health management. Besides it conducts design and implementation. The study is the PHM one aspect of prognostics and health management (PHM), and it has a little catalytic role in this field.

NBgossip:An Energy-Efficient Gossip Algorithm for Wireless Sensor networks

Gossip-based algorithms for information dissemination have recently received significant attention for sensor and ad hoc network applications because of their simplicity and robustness. However, a common drawback of many gossip-based protocols is the waste of energy in passing redundant information over the network. Thus gossip algorithms need to be re-engineered in order to become applicable to energy constrained networks. In this paper, we consider a scenario where each node in the network holds a piece of information （message） at the beginning, and the objective is to simultaneously disseminate all information （messages） among all nodes quickly and cheaply. To provide a practical solution to this problem for ad hoc and sensor networks, NBgossip algorithm is proposed, which is based on network coding and neighborhood gossip. In NBgossip, nodes do not simply forward messages they receive, instead, the linear combinations of the messages are sent out. In addition, every node exchanges messages with its neighboring nodes only. Mathematical proof and simulation studies show that the proposed NBgossip terminates in the optimal O（n）-order rounds and outperforms the existing gossip-based approaches in terms of energy consumption incurred in spreading all the information.

Schema matching, the problem of finding semantic correspondences between elements of two schemas, plays a key role in many applications, such as data warehouse, heterogeneous data sources integration and semantic Web. The existing approaches to automating schema matching almost focus on computing direct element matches (1:1 matches) between two schemas. However, relationships between real-world schemas involve many complex matches besides 1:1 matches. At present, there are few methods can discover complex matches, such as iMAP, but they have bad matching efficiency, because the candidate matches space is so large which they need searching. A complex schema matching system called CSM is introduced in this paper. Firstly it can filter unreasonable matches on data types and values by preprocessor and clustering processor, and employs a set of special-purpose searchers in match generator to explore a specialized portion of the search space and discovers 1:1 and complex matches. Then it estimates candidate matches and selects optimal candidate matches by using similarity estimator and match selector respectively. Finally, according to the problem that there are opaque columns in the schemas being matched, it can apply complementary matcher to discover matching relations between opaque columns further more. Thereby it can discover more general, reasonable matching pairs. Experiments show that, CSM does not only discover matches between schemas roundly, but also improve the matching recall and precision in practice.

The virtual machine (VM) technology has received an increasing interest a spotlight both in the industry and the research communities. Although the potential advantages of virtualization in HPC workloads have been documented, the potential impact to application performance in HPC environments is not clearly understood. This paper presents a study on performance evaluation of virtual HPC systems using High Performance Computing Challenge (HPCC) benchmark suite and xVM as the workload representative and VM technology, respectively. Based on the extended AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method, we propose an efficient performance evaluation model based on extended AHP and analyze the results and quantify the performance overhead of xVM in terms of compute, memory, and network overhead. Our analysis shows that the computational and network performance in HVM is slightly better and the memory performance is significantly better compared to paravirtualization.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) in embedded system is an issue concerned by many people. From the engineering point of view, by analyzing the scenario of embedded system, we propose the use of multi-list for HCI in embedded system. We have set up the model and implemented the system. Our engineering practice shows the effectiveness of this scheme.

The dependence of the g factors of semiconductor donors on applied electric and magnetic fields is of immense importance in spin-based quantum computation and in semiconductor spintronics. The donor g-factor Stark shift is sensitive to the orientation of the electric and magnetic fields and is strongly influenced by the band-structure and spin-orbit interactions of the host. Using a multimillion atom tight-binding framework, the spin-orbit Stark parameters are computed for donors in multivalley semiconductors, silicon, and germanium. Comparison with limited experimental data shows good agreement for a donor in silicon. Results for gate-induced transition from three-dimensional to two-dimensional wave-function confinement show that the corresponding g-factor shift in Si is experimentally observable, and at modest B field, O(1 T) can exceed the Stark shift of the hyperfine interaction.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.
