Advancement in micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) that integrate mechanical system, sensor, actuator, and electronics has contributed to significant improvement of automation system including security and safety system. This paper will propose a framework of integrated security and safety system that combines microembedded system and computer based system. The framework is designed and developed based on conceptual model of security and safety system for enclosed area such as campus, industrial complex, airport, and oil/gas platform. As infrastructure for connecting the security and safety devices, control panels, and network operating center (NOC), the framework will use hybrid networking technology. Such technology interconnects IP-based and non IP network in form of wired and wireless data communication.

In single frequency network (SFN), there exist some special long delay spread channels as well as conventional multi-path channels. For pilot-aided orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems, channel estimation is usually accomplished by interpolation with pilots. However, few pilot subcarriers exist within coherent bandwidth under the long delay spread channels in SFN. In this case, conventional interpolation methods cannot work properly. This paper proposes a sine-wave based frequency domain interpolation method for channel estimation of pilot-aided OFDM systems in SFN. As simulation results show, the proposed method gives accurate channel estimation under the long delay spread channels, whereas the mismatched Wiener interpolation filter (WIF) estimates channel response inaccurately. Moreover, the proposed method performs well under conventional multi-path channels, especially for systems which adopt high order modulations.

Carrier-blind and non-data-aided (NDA) feedforward solutions for symbol timing recovery are particularly important for initial acquisition in burst modems; the Oerder and Meyr (O&M) algorithm is perhaps the most prominent example in this respect. Since usually operated with an oversampling rate of four, alternatives using only two samples per symbol have been suggested in the open literature. On the other hand, Moeneclaey and Batsele introduced an error detector for blind NDA recovery in feedback loops, based on only one sample per symbol. In the current paper, it is shown that this approach can be successfully applied to a feedforward solution. In this context, two estimator variants are developed exhibiting no self-noise effect for M-ary PSK schemes, whereas it turns out that this does not hold true for nonconstant modulus constellations.

Fabrication of microscale and nanoscale silicon waveguide devices requires patterning silicon, but until recently, exploitation of the technology has been restricted by the difficulty of forming ever-small features with minimum linewidth fluctuation. A technique was developed for fabricating such devices achieving vertical sidewall profile, smooth sidewall roughness of less than10 nm, and fine features of 40 nm. Subsequently, silicon microring resonator and silicon-grating coupler were realized using this technique.

Using a nonperturbative method, we study the exact entanglement dynamics of two two-level dipole-dipole interacting atoms coupled to a common non-Markovian reservoir with different coupling strengths. Besides analyzing the conditions for the existence of a steady state, we find that, although the dipole-dipole interaction could destroy the stationary entanglement, a relatively strong dipole-dipole interaction does suppress disentanglement in the initial period of time. These results are helpful for the practical engineering of entanglement in the future.
