The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. The main goal of this paper is to describe the technical aspects of our generic approach for domain-specific model analysis. Our framework supports checks and information retrieval for a set of models which may be based on different notations and tools. Such a modelling scenario is typical for the analysis of clinical processes, where techniques of process modelling (e.g. Aris) are combined with techniques of IT-landscape modelling (e.g. using the 3LGM). All elements defined and used in the models under consideration are saved in a common repository based on a common meta model. The method supports the user during the modelling and the analysis phase. Support for the latter is achieved by providing aggregated information on model elements based on queries and views, which can be considered as model cross sections corresponding to given aspects. We present an architecture, a prototypical realization and the technologies used in our implementation. The architecture is modular, used technologies and software are open, thus the tool is easy to extend.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are flexible, robust, and self-organizing resource sharing infrastructures which are typically designed in a fully decentralized manner. However, a key problem of such systems are peers overusing a resource. This paper presents a fully decentralized scheme to achieve fair use in P2P systems, which does not require a priori information about a peer. The approach developed is based on a scarce resource trading scheme (SRTCPU), which utilizes CPU time as a form of payment. SRTCPU provides an incentive to offer CPU time in return of consuming a scarce resource. A distributed DNS has been implemented as an example application that uses SRTCPU.

Feature Filtering is an approach that is widely used for dimensionality reduction in text categorization. In this approach feature scoring methods are used to evaluate features leading to selection. Thresholding is then applied to select the highest scoring features either locally or globally. In this paper, we investigate several local and global feature selection methods. The usage of Standard Deviation (STD) and Maximum Deviation (MD) as globalization schemes is suggested. This work provides a comparative study among fourteen thresholding techniques using different scoring methods and benchmark datasets of diverse nature. This includes investigation of normalizing feature scores before combining them in the global pool. The results suggest that normalized MD outperforms other methods in thresholding Document Frequency (DF) scores using even and moderate diverse data-sets. Furthermore, the results indicated that normalizing feature scores improves the performance of rare categories and balances the bias of some techniques to frequent cateories. © 2006, Australian computer Society, Inc.

National institute of Information and Communications Technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.

Design space exploration plays an essential role in the system-level design of embedded systems. It is imperative therefore to have efficient and effective exploration tools in the early stages of design, where the design space is largest. System-level simulation frameworks that aim for early design space exploration create large volumes of simulation data in exploring alternative architectural solutions. Interpreting and drawing conclusions from these copious simulation results can be extremely cumbersome. In other domains that also struggle with interpreting large volumes of data, such as scientific computing, data visualization is an invaluable tool. Such visualization is often domain specific and has not become widely used in evaluating the results of computer architecture simulations. Surprisingly little research has been undertaken in the dynamic use of visualization to guide architectural design space exploration. In this paper, we plead for the study and development of generic methods and techniques for run-time visualization of system-level computer architecture simulations. We further explain that these techniques must be scalable and interactive, allowing designers to better explore complex (embedded system) architectures. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Diversification of software assets through changing requirements impose a constant challenge on the developers and maintainers of large software systems. Recent research has addressed the mining for data in software repositories of single products ranging from fine- to coarse grained analyses. But so far, little attention has been payed to mining data about the evolution of product families. In this work, we study the evolution and commonalities of three variants of the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), a large open source operating system. The research questions we tackle are concerned with how to generate high level views of the system discovering and indicating evolutionary highlights. To process the large amount of data, we extended our previously developed approach for storing release history information to support the analysis of product families. In a case study we apply our approach on data from three different code repositories representing about 8.5GB of data and 10 years of active development. Copyright 2005 ACM.

IATAC: A Smart Predictor to Turn-Off L2 Cache Lines

As technology evolves, power dissipation increases and cooling systems become more complex and expensive. There are two main sources of power dissipation in a processor: dynamic power and leakage. Dynamic power has been the most significant factor, but leakage will become increasingly significant in future. It is predicted that leakage will shortly be the most significant cost as it grows at about a 5× rate per generation. Thus, reducing leakage is essential for future processor design. Since large caches occupy most of the area, they are one of the leakiest structures in the chip and hence, a main source of energy consumption for future processors. This paper introduces IATAC (inter-access time per access count), a new hardware technique to reduce cache leakage for L2 caches. IATAC dynamically adapts the cache size to the program requirements turning off cache lines whose content is not likely to be reused. Our evaluation shows that this approach outperforms all previous state-of-the-art techniques. IATAC turns off 65% of the cache lines across different L2 cache configurations with a very small performance degradation of around 2%. © 2005, ACM. All rights reserved.
