Summary form only given. A tapered-silica fiber has recently been used in producing an ultra-broad band spectrum. By heating and stretching a 10 mm silica fiber with a 125 /spl mu/m outer diameter and a 9 /spl mu/m core diameter, a 70 mm totally long tapered fiber was produced with a 25 mm long waist of 2 /spl mu/m uniform diameter. A typical resultant ultra-broad band spectrum was found to range from 425 to 955 nm. By using our second-harmonic frequency-resolved optical gating (SH-FROG) apparatus, the intensity and phase profiles of the output pulse from the fiber in both temporal and frequency domains were determined. The output pulse was centered at 785 nm and had an averaged power of 26 mW for the input with a 150 fs duration. We performed pulse compression with a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) on the basis of the spectrum phase information obtained by the SH-FROG measurement. This was the first pulse compression of an output pulse from a tapered fiber using an SLM. That is, chirp compensation of the complicated frequency-dependent phase in comparison with that of the conventional silica-fiber output was carried out successfully by the spatial light modulation technique for the first time.

Monitoring of environmental chemicals in Japan has revealed that several endocrine active chemicals are in river water, sediments, and wildlife as well as in the human umbilical cord. In 2001, risk assessments of tributyltin and nonylphenol have been conducted by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. Risk assessments of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and di-isononyl phthalate have also been performed by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare using a toxicological point of view in 2001. In this review, an overview of recent progress in endocrine disruptor research in Japan will be provided.

The human hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase (H-PGDS) gene is expressed in megakaryoblastic cells, and its expression is enhanced by phorbol ester. We analyzed the promoter activity of the 5′-flanking region and the untranslated exon 1 (−1044 to +290) of the human H-PGDS gene in human megakaryoblastic Dami cells. Both promoter-luciferase reporter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays demonstrated that the Oct-1 element in the 5′-flanking region was required for the cell type-specific activation of the H-PGDS gene. The AP-2 element within the untranslated exon 1 was shown to be critical for the basal expression and the phorbol ester-mediated up-regulation of the gene. The H-PGDS promoter activity was effectively enhanced by co-expression with AP-2α in AP-2-deficient HepG2 cells. © 2002, Elsevier B.V.

An experimental model using guinea pigs to reduce accumulated dioxins in the body

Dioxins are one of the accumulative endocrine disruptors that are detected from the human body. They are known to induce a wide range of adverse effects, however there are only a few methods that have been reported to reduce them. Consequently, a new effective method to reduce the dioxins in our body needs to be developed. To develop such a method, animal models are needed to be experimented on in order to evaluate each method required. In this study, an animal model using guinea pigs was made to evaluate the methods. Three weeks after the administration of 0.05 microg/kg/day of TCDD for 5 days, the serum TCDD level in the guinea pigs was almost equal to the relatively high dioxin level among human serum. Our present study suggests that the guinea pig model used in this research can be effective for further study in the method to reduce accumulated dioxins in the body.

The ever-increasing presence of environmental toxicants and their disruptive effect on the reproductive systems of wildlife raises the question of possible damage to the human reproductive system. Using medicolegal data from over 20,000 Japanese men subjected to necropsy from 1948 to 1998, we investigated temporal changes in testis weight to find possible evidence of male reproductive disorders. We also carried out a histological examination of 747 testes collected from 1978 to 1998. Our detailed analyses of the development of testis weight over the past 50 years have revealed four clear phenomena: (i) the age at which testis weight reaches its maximum has decreased;(ii) peak weight showed a general increase until it started to decline in boys born after 1960;(iii) the decline-rate at which testis weight decreases after its peak has greatly accelerated;and (iv) the onset of increasing testis weight of boys has occurred at a progressively younger age. Our quantitative analyses of testis weight indicate the possibility of a subtle reproductive disorder in Japanese men, especially in those born after 1960. Together with the accelerated development and decline in testis weight during the past 50 years, the decline in peak weight might be indicative of a subtle interference of environmental toxicants with male reproductive organogenesis.

New High-Efficiency Source of Photon Pairs for Engineering Quantum Entanglement

We constructed an efficient source of photon pairs using a waveguide-type nonlinear device and performed a two-photon interference experiment with an unbalanced Michelson interferometer. As the interferometer has two arms of different lengths, photons from the short arm arrive at the detector earlier than those from the long arm. We find that the arrival time difference (ΔL/c) and the time window of the coincidence counter (ΔT) are important parameters which determine the boundary between the classical and quantum regimes. Fringes of high visibility ( 80%±10%) were observed when ΔT<ΔL/c. This result is explained only by quantum theory and is clear evidence for quantum entanglement of the interferometer’s optical paths.

Coupling between magnetism and dielectric properties in quantum paraelectric EuTiO3

The dielectric constant of quantum paraelectric EuTiO3, which contains Eu2+ with S=7/2 spin and Ti4+, has been measured under a magnetic field. The dielectric constant shows a critical decrease at the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu spins at 5.5 K, as well as a substantial change under a magnetic field (by ∼7% with 1.5 T), indicating a strong coupling between the Eu spins and dielectric properties. We show that the variation of the dielectric constant is dominated by the pair correlation of the nearest-neighbor Eu spins, likely via the variation of the soft-phonon-mode frequency.

Observation of Andreev Surface Bound States in the 3-K Phase Region of Sr2RuO4

The tunneling spectrum of the superconducting phase with Tc≃3.0K has been measured in the Ru-embedded region of Sr2RuO4 using cleaved junctions. A sharp zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) has been observed below 3 K. All characteristics of this ZBCP suggest that it originates from Andreev surface bound states, indicating that the pairing in the 3-K phase is also non- s-wave. Below the bulk Tc of Sr2RuO4 (≃1.5K), a crossover from sharp to bell-shaped ZBCP was found. This supports the theory that there is a phase transition in the 3-K phase region near the bulk Tc.

Soliton in Two-Band Superconductor

There is a soliton in a superconductor having two bands (two-band superconductor), when the interband interaction is much smaller than the intraband interaction. This soliton is in a stable state. In the soliton the relative phase between two gap parameters rotates 0 to 2π (or −π to π), where each gap resides in each band. A phase slip of the superconducting order parameter is accompanied with the soliton. The phase slip is not n×2π where n is an integer. A soliton traps the flux inside the superconducting ring, of which magnitude is not integral multiples of the fluxoid quantum.
