Mean-field theory for double-well systems on degree-heterogeneous networks

Many complex dynamical systems in the real world, including ecological, climate, financial, and power-grid systems, often show critical transitions, or tipping points, in which the system’s dynamics suddenly transit into a qualitatively different state. In mathematical models, tipping points happen as a control parameter gradually changes and crosses a certain threshold. Tipping elements in such systems may interact with each other as a network, and understanding the behavior of interacting tipping elements is a challenge because of the high dimensionality originating from the network. Here we develop a degree-based mean-field theory for a prototypical double-well system coupled on a network with the aim of understanding coupled tipping dynamics with a low-dimensional description. The method approximates both the onset of the tipping point and the position of equilibria with a reasonable accuracy. Based on the developed theory and numerical simulations, we also provide evidence for multistage tipping point transitions in networks of double-well systems. © 2022, CC BY.

The water treatment depends exclusively on the identification of residues containing toxic chemical elements accumulated in NPs (nanoparticles), and ultrafine particles sourced from waste piles located at old, abandoned sulfuric acid factories containing phosphogypsum requires global attention. The general objective of this study is to quantify and analyze the hazardous chemical elements present in the leachate of waste from deactivated sulfuric acid factories, coupled in NPs and ultrafine particles, in the port region of the city of Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples were collected in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Corresponding images from the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite, taken in the same general vicinity, detected the levels of absorption coefficient of Detritus and Gelbstoff (ADG443_NN) in 443 m−1, chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN (m−3)), and total suspended matter (TSM_NN (g m−3) at 72 points on the marine coast of the port region. The results of inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrate that the leaching occurring in waste piles at the port area of Imbituba was the likely source of hazardous chemical elements (e.g., Mg, Sr, Nd, and Pr) in the environment. These leachates were formed due to the presence of coal pyrite and Fe-acid sulfates in said waste piles. The mobility of hazardous chemical elements potentiates changes in the marine ecosystem, in relation to ADG443_NN (m−1), CHL_NN (m−3), and TSM NN (g m−3), with values greater than 20 g m−3 found in 2021 and 2022. This indicated changes in the natural conditions of the marine ecosystem up to 30 km from the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, justifying public initiatives for water treatment on a global scale. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. The aim of this study is to develop a fun and effective computer application game for children with amblyopia and to prevent eye strain in people whose work or lifestyle involves constantly looking at screens. The main motivation is to use children’s enthusiasm for playing video games for the treatment of amblyopia. For this, hardware and software products were brought together, and a software was developed according to software engineering principles. The system was tested with a group of volunteers and necessary alterations were made.

Computer simulations are an important tool for studying the mechanics of biological evolution. In particular, agent-based approaches provide an opportunity to collect high-quality records of ancestry relationships. Such phylogenies can provide insight into evolutionary dynamics within these simulations. Previous work generally tracks lineages directly, yielding an exact phylogenetic record of evolutionary history. However, challenges exist in scaling direct ancestrytracking approaches to highly-distributed, many-processor evolution in silico. An alternative approach is to estimate phylogenetic history via noncoding annotations on digital genomes, akin to how bioinformaticians build phylogenies by assessing genetic similarities between organisms. Recent work has extended this “hereditary stratigraphy” approach to support powerful hardware accelerator platforms, such as the Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine. Although these second-generation “surface”-based hereditary stratigraphy algorithms have demonstrated order-ofmagnitude speedups over first-generation “column”-based algorithms, it remains unknown how they impact the accuracy of reconstructed phylogenies. To address this question, we assessed reconstruction accuracy under alternative configurations across a matrix of evolutionary conditions varying in selection pressure, spatial structure, and ecological dynamics. Encouragingly, we find that the second-generation approaches provide higher reconstruction quality across most surveyed conditions.

Ultrasound kidney image segmentation presents significant challenges due to missing or ambiguous boundaries. In this study, we introduce a coarse-to-refinement approach incorporating four novel aspects. Firstly, we leverage the properties of a principal curve (PC) to automatically fine-tune the curve shape and employ a neural network's learning ability to reduce model error. Secondly, a deep fusion learning network is utilized for the coarse segmentation step, incorporating a parallel architecture to enhance deep-learning performance. Thirdly, addressing the limitation of standard PC-based methods in determining the number of vertices automatically, we propose an automatic searching polygon tracking method using a mean shift clustering-based approach to replace the projection and vertex extension step in standard PC-based methods. Lastly, we develop an explainable mathematical map function for the kidney contour, as denoted by the neural network output (i.e., optimized vertices), which aligns well with the ground truth contour. We conducted various experiments to evaluate our method's performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in ultrasound kidney image segmentation. © 2023 IEEE.

Ultrasound image segmentation is crucial for early disease detection and treatment planning but remains a challenging task due to the low contrast of organ boundaries and varying image quality. Current methods often require manual intervention or have limited accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid framework that combines an automatic option polygon segment (AOPS) algorithm and a distributed- and memory-based evolution (DME) algorithm for precise ultrasound organ segmentation. Our pipeline consists of two cascaded stages: (1) a coarse segmentation step using the AOPS algorithm, which determines the number of vertices/clusters without human intervention, and (2) a refinement step using the DME algorithm to hunt for the optimal neural network, which is then used to represent a smooth, explainable mathematical expression of the organ boundary. We employ the fractional backpropagation learning network with L2 regularization (FBLN) for training and use the scaled exponential linear unit (SELU) activation function to address the vanishing gradient problem. This is a new attempt such a hybrid framework is applied to ultrasound organ segmentation tasks, and it demonstrates significant contributions in terms of accuracy, smoothness, and computational efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

Dimension reduction techniques for dynamical systems on networks are considered to promote our understanding of the original high-dimensional dynamics. One strategy of dimension reduction is to derive a low-dimensional dynamical system whose behavior approximates the observables of the original dynamical system that are weighted linear summations of the state variables at the different nodes. Recently proposed methods use the leading eigenvector of the adjacency matrix of the network as the mixture weights to obtain such observables. In the present study, we explore performances of this type of one-dimensional reductions of dynamical systems on networks when we use non-leading eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix as the mixture weights. Our theory predicts that non-leading eigenvectors can be more efficient than the leading eigenvector and enables us to select the eigenvector minimizing the error. We numerically verify that the optimal non-leading eigenvector outperforms the leading eigenvector for some dynamical systems and networks. We also argue that, despite our theory, it is practically better to use the leading eigenvector as the mixture weights to avoid misplacing the bifurcation point too distantly and to be resistant against dynamical noise. © 2022, CC BY.

Early Warnings for Multistage Transitions in Dynamics on Networks

Successfully anticipating sudden major changes in complex systems is a practical concern. Such complex systems often form a heterogeneous network, which may show multistage transitions in which some nodes experience a regime shift earlier than others as an environment gradually changes. Here we investigate early warning signals for networked systems undergoing a multistage transition. We found that knowledge of both the ongoing multistage transition and network structure enables us to calculate effective early warning signals for multistage transitions. Furthermore, we found that small subsets of nodes could anticipate transitions as well as or even better than using all the nodes. Even if we fix the network and dynamical system, no single best subset of nodes provides good early warning signals, and a good choice of sentinel nodes depends on the tipping direction and the current stage of the dynamics within a multistage transition, which we systematically characterize. © 2022, CC BY.
