A Spatial Constraint Model for Manipulating Static Visualizations

We introduce a spatial constraint model to characterize the positioning and interactions in visualizations, thereby facilitating the activation of static visualizations. Our model provides users with the capability to manipulate visualizations through operations such as selection, filtering, navigation, arrangement, and aggregation. Building upon this conceptual framework, we propose a prototype system designed to activate pre-existing visualizations by imbuing them with intelligent interactions. This augmentation is accomplished through the integration of visual objects with forces. The instantiation of our spatial constraint model enables seamless animated transitions between distinct visualization layouts. To demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, we present usage scenarios that involve the activation of visualizations within real-world contexts.

Improve the Security of Industrial Control System: A Fine-Grained Classification Method for DoS Attacks on Modbus/TCP

With the rapid development of technology, more malicious traffic data brought negative influences on industrial areas. Modbus protocol plays a momentous role in the communications of Industrial Control Systems (ICS), but it's vulnerable to Denial of Service attacks(DoS). Traditional detection methods cannot perform well on fine-grained detection tasks which could contribute to locating targets of attacks and preventing the destruction. Considering the temporal locality and high dimension of malicious traffic, this paper proposed a Neural Network architecture named MODLSTM, which consists of three parts: input preprocessing, feature recoding, and traffic classification. By virtue of the design, MODLSTM can form continuous stream semantics based on fragmented packets, discover potential low-dimensional features and finally classify traffic at a fine-grained level. To test the model's performances, some experiments were conducted on industrial and public datasets, and the models achieved excellent performances in comparison with previous work(accuracy increased by 0.71% and 0.07% respectively). The results show that the proposed method has more satisfactory abilities to detect DoS attacks related to Modbus, compared with other works. It could help to build a reliable firewall to address a variety of malicious traffic in diverse situations, especially in industrial environments.

Technology fitness landscape for design innovation: a deep neural embedding approach based on patent data

Technology is essential to innovation and economic prosperity. Understanding technological changes can guide innovators to find new directions of design innovation and thus make breakthroughs. In this work, we construct a technology fitness landscape via deep neural embeddings of patent data. The landscape consists of 1,757 technology domains and their respective improvement rates. In the landscape, we found a high hill related to information and communication technologies (ICT) and a vast low plain of the remaining domains. The landscape presents a bird's-eye view of the structure of the total technology space, providing a new way for innovators to interpret technology evolution with a biological analogy, and a biologically-inspired inference to the next innovation.

Deep reinforcement learning for community architectural layout generation

Architectural layout design is of considerable importance in urban design, yet it can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive task for architects. Thus, a highly automated approach would benefit the profession. Different from recently studied methods for indoor floorplan generation, community architectural layout generation faces more challenges due to constraints such as building interval and volume rate while also considering architectural aesthetics. Existing algorithms that rely on predefined rules or heuristic search have difficulties balancing these factors. In addition, a dataset for evaluating the generated plans is lacking. In this paper, we formulate the community architectural layout task as a Markov game by defining the state, action space and reward function. We then propose a multi-agent reinforcement learning method with curriculum learning to generate layouts for the formulation. Besides, we propose a set of metrics for the evaluation of architectural layouts especially for residential area planning. We conduct our experiments on the real-world scene. The results have demonstrated our approach's superiority in comparison to baseline methods.

Atherosclerosis, a multifactorial progressive inflammatory disease, is the common pathology underlying cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The macrophage plasticity is involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. With the advance of metabolomics and epigenetics, metabolites/metabolic and epigenetic modification such as DNA methylation, histone modification and noncoding RNA, play a crucial role in macrophage polarization and the progression of atherosclerosis. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of the essential role of metabolic and epigenetic regulation, as well as the crosstalk between the two in regulating macrophage polarization in atherosclerosis. We also highlight the potential therapeutic strategies of regulating macrophage polarization via epigenetic and metabolic modifications for atherosclerosis, and offer recommendations to advance our knowledge of the roles of metabolic-epigenetic crosstalk in macrophage polarization in the context of atherosclerosis. Fundamental studies that elucidate the mechanisms by which metabolic and epigenetic regulation of macrophage polarization influence atherosclerosis will pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches.

Breast cancer histopathology image classification using transformer with discrete wavelet transform

Early diagnosis of breast cancer using pathological images is essential to effective treatment. With the development of deep learning techniques, breast cancer histopathology image classification methods based on neural networks develop rapidly. However, these methods usually capture features in the spatial domain, rarely consider frequency feature distributions, which limits classification performance to some extent. This paper proposes a novel breast cancer histopathology image classification network, called DWNAT-Net, which introduces Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to Neighborhood Attention Transformer (NAT). DWT decomposes inputs into different frequency bands through iterative filtering and downsampling, and it can extract frequency information while retaining spatial information. NAT utilizes Neighborhood Attention (NA) to confine the attention computation to a local neighborhood around each token to enable efficient modeling of local dependencies. The proposed method was evaluated on the BreakHis and Bach datasets, yielding impressive image-level recognition accuracy rates. We achieve a recognition accuracy rate of 99.66% on the BreakHis dataset and 91.25% on the BACH dataset, demonstrating competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Clinical signature and associated immune metabolism of NLRP1 in pan-cancer

Inflammations have been linked to tumours, suggesting a potential association between NLRP1 and cancer. Nevertheless, a systematic assessment of NLRP1's role across various cancer types currently absent. A comprehensive bioinformatic analysis was conducted to determine whether NLRP1 exhibits prognostic relevance linked to immune metabolism across various cancers. The study leveraged data from the TCGA and GTEx databases to explore the clinical significance, metabolic features, and immunological characteristics of NLRP1, employing various tools such as R, GEPIA, STRING and TISIDB. NLRP1 exhibited differential expression patterns across various cancers, with elevated expression correlating with a more favourable prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD). Downregulation of NLRP1 reduced tumour metabolic activity in LUAD. Moreover, the mutational signature of NLRP1 was linked to a favourable prognosis. Interestingly, high NLRP1 expression inversely correlated with tumour stemness while positively correlating with tumour immune infiltration in various cancers including LUAD and PAAD. Through extensive big data analysis, we delved into the role of NLRP1 across various tumour types, constructing a comprehensive role map of its involvement in pan-cancer scenarios. Our findings highlight the potential of NLRP1 as a promising therapeutic target specifically in LUAD and PAAD.

Chemotherapy was one of indispensable methods for treating cancer, and the development of novel antitumor drugs was necessary due to the emergent drug resistance and undesirable side effects. In the current study, we successfully constructed a novel library of isatin-phenol hybrids by chemical coupling of isatin (1) with a series of active phenols including honokiol (2), magnolol (3), bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl) sulfide (4), bisphenol A (5), carvacrol (6), and hydroxyqunioline (7) respectively. The target molecules were screened for anticancer activity, and we further investigate the anti-cancer mechanism of the most potent compound IPH10 in vitro and in vivo. Animal experiments demonstrated that IPH10 possessed strong anti-tumor effects in vivo without hepatic and renal toxicity. Moreover, the effects of IPH10 on mitochondrial membrane potential (JC-1) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tumor cells were investigated, and the results showed that IPH10 could significantly increase the content of ROS and dramatically decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential in tumor cells. Furthermore, the effect of IPH10 on apoptotic proteins in tumor cells was also explored by Western blotting analysis, which revealed that IPH10 could significantly increase the protein content of cleaved caspase-9/cleaved caspase-3/ cleaved caspase-7/cleaved PARP. Taken together, the current study reported a promising novel chemotherapeutic drug candidate IPH10 that could inhibit the growth and induce the apoptosis of tumor cells.

Covert Communications via Two-Way IRS With Noise Power Uncertainty

Due to the open accessibility of wireless networks with severe privacy risks, covert communication has gained increasing attention, where the effective range is limited by the low transmit power. Fortunately, employing intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) as a relay has become an appealing solution to extend the range of covert communication. To this end, we investigate the covert communication in which the ground transmitter secretly delivers information to the full-duplex receiver through a two-way IRS, avoiding detection by the warden. Then, the error detection probability is determined with an optimal threshold at a warden, which is the worst case for covert transmission. Moreover, we analyze the closed-form expression of outage probability. To improve the covertness, artificial noise is generated by the receiver to interfere with the adversarial monitoring. Thus, considering the optimal prior probability, we maximize the expected error detection probability of warden subject to the covertness constraint. Specifically, we alternately optimize the prior probability and the transmit power of artificial noise while satisfying the outage probability and covertness requirement. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for covert communications via the two-way IRS.

Origami-Inspired Reconfigurable Soft Actuators for Soft Robotic Applications

Soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) hold great promise for simple and effective actuation of soft robots. Multi-degree-of-freedom SPAs are highly desired as they enable diverse motion forms and improve possibility for soft robots to navigate challenging environments and perform complex tasks. Herein, this study proposes two novel origami-based SPAs (O-SPAs), namely the Flasher origami-inspired SPA (FO-SPA) and the Kresling origami-inspired SPA (KO-SPA), which are fabricated entirely from soft silicone without any rigid supports. A finite element model is developed to predict the deformation behavior of O-SPAs and the deformability and dynamic response of O-SPAs are characterized through performance tests. Simulation experiments are carried out to investigate the impact of different structural parameters on their performance. These O-SPAs are highly sensitive to low negative pressure, exhibiting 80% of maximum deformation at -4 kPa. Based on the Flasher and Kresling origami pattern, the actuators are capable of generating compound motions including contraction, twisting, and radial motions. These motions can be used as "building blocks" for the rapid reconfiguration of various soft robots. The study has successfully enriched the types of existing SPAs by providing important multiple motions through origami, with great potential to facilitate the rapid and low-cost design of soft robots. The origami-inspired reconfigurable soft actuators exhibit simultaneous multiple motions when activated by negative pressure. The actuators are reconfigured into three different soft robots, including a circular soft gripper, a bipedal walking soft robot, and a soft pipeline crawling robot. image
