Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating intestinal disease associated with high rate of mortality and long-term morbidity. It can be successfully treated if diagnosed early, but there is no reliable way to detect NEC in early stages. Infrared imaging can detect tissue inflammation and thus can offer an early diagnostic tool for NEC. We enrolled infants with no clinical or radiographic signs of NEC, and a group consisting of infants with evidence of at least Bell's Stage 2 NEC. The infants underwent bedside infrared imaging for 60 seconds. Our dataset consisted of 20 normal infants and 9 infants with NEC. In infants with NEC, the upper-to-lower (UL) region temperatures differed significantly, whereas there was no significant difference in the UL quadrant temperatures in normal infants (p = 0.0037 Wilcoxon Rank-Sum and Kruskal-Wallis tests). We found no significant differences in left-to-right (LR) quadrant abdominal temperature profiles for both the normal and the NEC group. The performance of the Decision Tree classifier was highest when using the medians of UL quadrant temperatures;the mean specificity, sensitivity, and standard deviations for ten trials with medians and means were respectively: 90&+/-12%;78%+/-18%;88%+/-14%;69%+/-12%. We conclude that abdominal infrared imaging of preterm infants yields thermal profiles that can be analyzed and classified using statistical methods and decision trees to identify infants with and without NEC. Future work includes automating the analysis, conducting a prospective study to attempt detecting NEC at earlier stages, and assessing other image analysis approaches to enhance the overall performance of our methodology. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Biometric signatures for identity recognition have been practiced for centuries. Basically, the personal attributes used for a biometric identification system can be classified into two areas: one is based on physiological attributes, such as DNA, facial features, retinal vasculature, fingerprint, hand geometry, iris texture and so on;the other scenario is dep.ndent on the individual behavioral attributes, such as signature, keystroke, voice and gait style. Among these features, iris recognition is one of the most attractive approaches due to its nature of randomness, texture stability over a life time, high entropy density and non-invasive acquisition. While the performance of iris recognition on high quality image is well investigated, not too many studies addressed that how iris recognition performs subject to non-ideal image data, especially when the data is acquired in challenging conditions, such as long working distance, dynamical movement of subjects, uncontrolled illumination conditions and so on. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, the optical system parameters, such as magnification and field of view, was optimally designed through the first-order optics. Secondly, the irradiance constraints was derived by optical conservation theorem. Through the relationship between the subject and the detector, we could estimate the limitation of working distance when the camera lens and CCD sensor were known. The working distance is set to 3m in our system with pupil diameter 86mm and CCD irradiance 0.3mW/cm2. Finally, We employed a hybrid scheme combining eye tracking with pan and tilt system, wavefront coding technology, filter optimization and post signal recognition to implement a robust iris recognition system in dynamic operation. The blurred image was restored to ensure recognition accuracy over 3m working distance with 400mm focal length and aperture F/6.3 optics. Crowded environments pose a challenge to the comfort and safety of those with impaired ability. To address this challenge we have developed an efficient algorithm that may be embedded in a portable device. The algorithm anticipates undesirable circumstances in real time, by verifying simulation traces of local crowd dynamics against temporal logical formulae. The model incorporates the objectives of the user, pre-existing knowledge of the environment and real time sensor data. The algorithm is thus able to suggest a course of action to achieve the user's changing goals, while minimising the probability of problems for the user and others in the environment. To demonstrate our algorithm we have implemented it in an autonomous computing device that we show is able to negotiate complex virtual environments. The performance of our implementation demonstrates that our technology can be successfully applied in a portable device or robot.

Classical search engines rely mainly on keyword matches. More advanced search engines and information retrieval systems use personalization techniques to enhance the relevancy of the results. Those approaches assume that the current search of a user is directly related to his/her profiles and/or past navigation/search experience. However, this assumption does not hold in all cases. In this paper, we are proposing an information retrieval approach that is not making any assumption about the user. It offers a straightforward way to choose and navigate the available interpretations. Our approach relies on a navigation model that is based on a new paradigm called multi-space interpretation index and projection operations. We have derived a mathematical model of a Web information retrieval system based on the new paradigm. This concept naturally distinguishes between the different interpretation layers (each layer is a separate space). Therefore, it offers to users the flexibility to navigate the interpretation spaces in such a way that suites better their information needs.

A robotic mediator is a robot platform that mediates between the user and the smart environment system in order to capture user's intent and provide proactive services by collaborating with available resources in the environment. In order for a robotic mediator to provide the user with proactive context-aware services, it must communicate and collaborate with diverse heterogeneous devices and systems in the smart environment. However, existing network robot software platforms are not flexible enough to effectively integrate both of the respective features specific to robots and environments. Moreover, they do not support high-level collaboration model that is crucial to enable mediating between the user and the smart environment. In order to address the problem, we proposed ICARS [10], integrated control architecture for the robotic mediator in smart environments. ICARS consists of three layers each of which provides a flexible communication/device model, an adaptive service model for the integrated robot control architecture and a behavior-based high-level collaboration model as a key feature respectively. In this paper, we present the detailed design, implementation, and experiments of ICARS mainly focusing on the communication/device model layer. The experimental results show that ICARS enables flexible integration of the diverse devices in the robot and environment, adaptive service provision for collaborative services and easy development of high-level collaborative applications.

Very often the decline of the cognitive abilities related to age determines a gradual withdrawal of older adults within the domestic walls. Part of the problem is the difficulty in navigating in large and crowded environments that are perceived as intimidating by users with declining cognitive and sensitive ability. To alleviate this problem, we propose a walking assistant endowed with autonomous sensing and active brakes able to guide the user. In this paper, we address the problem of how to guide the user with a minimal impact on her/his freedom of motion. We propose a solution based on the use of an active braking system which can be easily accommodated on commercial walkers. The paper proposes a control strategy that strikes an interesting solution to guide the user through the optimal path without restricting her/his freedom of motion.

Business process modeling helps improving organizational selfawareness by sharing organizational knowledge. It is acknowledged that the maintenance of the models is a difficult task and that in most of the time companies build models to use in specific projects occurring at a given time, what have prevented its transformation into a repository of organizational knowledge to support the daily activities of organizations. The present work defines an "as-is" model continuous updating method that uses the annotation mechanism to create interaction contexts and to enable business actors to make explicit and communicate their knowledge about processes and their own work, and also to discuss the existing process representations. A prototype tool has been developed and was used in several case studies. This approach has demonstrated that organizational actors, since provided with a method and supporting tool, can act as active updaters of the process model by comparing modeled with actually executed activities.

Subsidy reduction and the increased importance of photovoltaic energy generation have triggered the need to develop accurate approaches to measure, estimate and possibly forecast energy production with the goal of enabling early detection and diagnosis of parametric faults before they become catastrophic and lead to partial or full shut down of the plant. Moreover the ability of accurately predicting the energy output of a photovoltaic plant is becoming increasingly important to operate efficiently the existing power grid infrastructure that has difficulties with intermittent, unpredictable power sources. In this paper a new model of photovoltaic solar parks designed to estimate efficiency, predict energy production and enable early fault detection is presented. The proposed model is based on an equivalent electro-thermal model of the PhotoVoltaic (PV) cell, which takes as input the irradiance, ambient temperature and wind speed measured by existing sensors and data-logging equipment used in most solar PV parks. The proposed model is demonstrated to accurately predict the performance of real-life MW scale plants. By directly comparing predicted vs. actual energy production, it also allows easy and early identification and diagnose of malfunctions and efficiency drops of PV systems. © 2013 IEEE.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a well-studied area in natural language processing (NLP) and the reported results in the literature are generally very high (~>%95) for most of the languages. Today, the focus area of most practical natural language applications (i.e. web mining, sentiment analysis, machine translation) is real natural language data such as Web2.0 or speech data. Nevertheless, the NER task is rarely investigated on this type of data which differs severely from formal written text. In this paper, we present 3 new Turkish data sets from different domains (on this focused area; namely from Twitter, a Speech-to-Text Interface and a Hardware Forum) annotated specifically for NER and report our first results on them. We believe, the paper draws light to the difficulty of these new domains for NER and the possible future work.

In this paper, we consider the optimal motion planning problem for an autonomous race car. A competitive autonomous car must acquire environmental and opponent information to compute, in real time, the minimum time collision free path and the low level control to track the chosen path. To cope with those requirements, we first solve the problem for a car running in isolation considering the optimal sequence of manoeuvres to approach bends and straight stretches of track. We then propose a discrete abstraction to derive a problem of graph optimisation that has a very efficient, albeit suboptimal, solution. In this context, an overtake manoeuvre against a slower car will be obtained excluding from the path the arcs that could potentially generate a collision. Finally, a control algorithm is used to ensure that the car always remains close to the planned path.
