Fluid flow and heat transfer in levitated droplets were numerically investigated. Three levitation methods: electro-magnetic levitation (EML), aerodynamic levitation (ADL), and electro-static levitation (ESL) were considered, and conservative laws of mass, momentum, and energy were applied as common models. The Marangoni effect was applied as a velocity boundary condition, whereas heat transfer and radiation heat loss were considered as thermal boundary conditions. As specific models to EML, the Lorentz force and Joule heat were calculated based on the analytical solution of the electromagnetic field. For ADL model, besides the Marangoni effect, the flow driven by the surface shear force was considered. For ADL and ESL models, the effect of laser heating was introduced as a boundary condition. All the equations were nondimensionalized using common scales for all three levitations. Numerical simulations were performed for several materials and droplet sizes, and the results were evaluated in terms of the Reynolds number based on the maximum velocity of the flow in the droplet. The order of magnitude of Reynolds numbers was evaluated as Re ∼ 104 for EML, Re ∼ 103 for ADL, and Re ∼ 101 for ESL. Based on the simulation results, we proposed simple formulas for predicting the Reynolds number of droplet internal convection using combinations of nondimensional numbers determined from physical properties of the material and the driving conditions. The proposed formulas can be used as surrogate models to predict the Reynolds numbers, even for materials other than those used in this study. © 2023, CC BY.

In this study, we describe an evaluation of the positional accuracy of stereo Visual SLAM with noisy feature points removed by blurring. We constructed an experimental environment that intentionally degrades the accuracy of Visual SLAM. In this environment, we placed the objects that are likely to generate noisy feature points. We evaluated the accuracy of the estimated positions of the original video and the video in which blurred regions of noise in the original video were provided to Visual SLAM. Consequently, we confirmed that the accuracy was improved compared to that of the original video. © 2023 IEEE.

The pursuit of 3D reconstruction from 2D images for nanomanipulation under scanning electron microscopy stands as a critical research endeavor. Previous methods either necessitates additional lighting which is difficult in standard SEM devices or relies on feature matching with low resolution and precision, further constraining reconstruction performance. In this paper, we propose a novel robot-assisted nanoscale 360° reconstruction approach, which simplifies SEM setups and maximizes the utilization of robot motion and feedback. By harnessing a nanorobotic system, we capture 360°multi-view images automatically with precise mapping information and camera postures. Sequentially, neural radiance field reconstruct the pixel-wise structure and synthesizing images from diverse perspectives. Experimental results using two real datasets demonstrates our approach’s efficacy, achieving PSNR of 28.1 and SSIM of 0.93 for nanotube reconstruction, and PSNR of 32.8 and SSIM of 0.98 for AFM cantilever reconstruction. These results validate the reliability and robustness of our proposed robot-assisted reconstruction method.

In this paper, we investigate the methods of data augmentation appropriate to detect bacteria from Gram stained smears images by YOLOv8. For data augmentation, we adopt the flipping, the rotation, the cutout and the change of the values in HSB color space. Then, we evaluate these methods and the methods of the cutout and the change of the values in HSB color space after applying the flipping and the rotation.

Simple, low-cost one-step fabrication donor-Acceptor hybrid thin films are highly desired for the practical realization of low-cost organic solar cells. In this work, oriented and hybrid thin films of P3HT/CdS were successfully fabricated by a solvent-free friction transfer (FT) method utilizing Cadmium xanthate [Cd(Xt)2] as CdS precursor and regioregular P3HT in a single step. Complete conversion of [Cd(Xt)2] to CdS with optical band gap of 2.53 eV after thermal annealing at 200 °C was confirmed by absorption spectral investigation. Polarized absorption spectral results revealed that FT-processed hybrid thin films of P3HT/CdS were oriented and extent of molecular orientation was enhanced after the thermal annealing at 200 °C. Highly oriented hybrid thin films with dichroic ratio of 6.95 was prepared under the optimum fabrication conditions such stage speed, stage temperature and applied load of 1200 mm/min, 85°C and 2.4 kg, respectively. © 2023 FTFMD.

Pressure Induced Nonmonotonic Evolution of Superconductivity in 6R−TaS2 with a Natural Bulk Van der Waals Heterostructure

The natural bulk Van der Waals heterostructure compound 6R−TaS2 consists of alternate stacking 1T- and 1H−TaS2 monolayers, creating a unique system that incorporates charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC) in distinct monolayers. Here, after confirming that the 2D nature of the lattice is preserved up to 8 GPa in 6R−TaS2, we documented an unusual evolution of CDW and SC by conducting high-pressure electronic transport measurements. Upon compression, we observe a gradual suppression of CDW within the 1T layers, while the SC exhibits a dome-shaped behavior that terminates at a critical pressure Pc around 2.9 GPa. By taking account of the fact that the substantial suppression of SC is concomitant with the complete collapse of CDW order at Pc, we argue that the 6R−TaS2 behaves like a stack of Josephson junctions and thus the suppressed superconductivity can be attributed to the weakening of Josephson coupling associated with the presence of CDW fluctuations in the 1T layers. Furthermore, the SC reversely enhances above Pc, implying the development of emergent superconductivity in the 1T layers after the melting of T-layer CDW orders. These results show that the 6R−TaS2 not only provides a promising platform to explore emergent phenomena but also serves as a model system to study the complex interactions between competing electronic states.

This study presents a crawl robot driven by a single actuator using a bistable lattice structure. The propagation of deformation waves through a bistable lattice realizes the crawling motion of the robot. Bistable structures with energy differences between the two stable states and reset mechanism enable easy and intermittent wave propagation. By softening its body, the robot can change its direction along a curved rail during locomotion. The experimental results of the prototype show that the robot can produce locomotion on straight, curved, and slope-ascending rails.

Energy efficiency and information freshness are key requirements for sensor nodes serving Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications, where a sink node collects informative and fresh data before a deadline, e.g., to control an external actuator. Content-based wake-up (CoWu) activates a subset of nodes that hold data relevant for the sink’s goal, thereby offering an energy-efficient way to attain objectives related to information freshness. This paper focuses on a scenario where the sink collects fresh information on top-k values, defined as data from the nodes observing the k highest readings at the deadline. We introduce a new metric called top-k Query Age of Information (k-QAoI), which allows us to characterize the performance of CoWu by considering the characteristics of the physical process. Further, we show how to select the CoWu parameters, such as its timing and threshold, to attain both information freshness and energy efficiency. The numerical results reveal the effectiveness of the CoWu approach, which is able to collect top-k data with higher energy efficiency while reducing k-QAoI when compared to round-robin scheduling, especially when the number of nodes is large and the required size of k is small. © 2024, CC BY.

We study the problem of diffusion-based network learning of a nonlinear phenomenon, m, from local agents’ measurements collected in a noisy environment. For a decentralized network and information spreading merely between directly neighboring nodes, we propose a non-parametric learning algorithm, that avoids raw data exchange and requires only mild a priori knowledge about m. Non-asymptotic estimation error bounds are derived for the proposed method. Its potential applications are illustrated through simulation experiments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
