In this paper, we demonstrate continuous-time adaptive control for nonlinear system of two funnel tanks in series. For this purpose continuous-time input-output linear model is considered describing nonlinear system in the neighborhood of an operating point. The two approaches discussed here are direct estimation and alternate delta model. In the case of direct approach the key lies in the differential filters used to compute estimates. In the second strategy parameters of corresponding delta model are recursively estimated. A feedback control configuration with to degrees of freedom is adopted. In order to guarantee stability as well as asymptotic tracking of the step reference and step load disturbance attenuation, polynomial method is taken into account for the resulting controllers. A simulation software tool implementing illustrative model of two funnel liquid tanks in series has been studied in detail. Most of the processes that need to be controlled are affected by external disturbances. In many cases, the disturbances can be measured. A control method that can successfully cope with disturbances which are known in advance is predictive control. The disturbances known in advance can be incorporated into calculation of the manipulated variable in predictive control. In many control applications, the disturbances are measurable but unknown in advance. In this case, the future course of the disturbance must be estimated on the basis of its past values. This paper proposes different approaches to estimation of future course of the measurable disturbances in predictive control. Particular approaches were compared by simulation.

The paper presents a comparison of two approaches applied to self - tuning control of a continuous - time two - input two - output system. In first case a continuous - time controller is used and since derivatives of an input and output of a controlled process can not be directly determined, the differential filters and filtered variables are established to substitute primary variables. The filtered variables are then used in the recursive identification procedure. The second method approximates the continuous - time system by a discrete linear model of the same order and a discrete controller is used. The classical recursive least squares method with the directional forgetting is then used to identify the system. Both discrete and continuous - time controllers which were applied to control the system are based on polynomial methods.

The testing of the statistically significant similarities between two different data series cannot be measured using by Wilcoxon or T paired test, because there is not exists pretest and posttest. For the alternative way of testing the similarities, when data has some boundness, the proposal of using cross-correlation tests is presented in this paper. When necessary, the condition is existing some same characteristics, which can be seen as the connection of two power system nodes in the power transmission system. The cross-correlation analysis can be suitably complemented using by computing the p values between the correlation data themselves, which in addition, the trend of correlation data is measured for expression of the dynamic of cross-correlation achieved data. Application of the proposed method is realized on the real data set of the behavior of power transmission systems in the Moravia-Silesian region. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Heat exchangers are devices whose primary responsibility is the transfer (exchange) of heat, typically from one fluid to another. However, they are not only used in heating applications, such as space heaters, but are also used in cooling applications, such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Heat exchange processes often contain time-delay. This paper deals with design of universal and robust digital control algorithms for control of great deal of processes with time-delay. These algorithms are realized by the digital Smith Predictor (SP) based on polynomial approach-by minimization of the Linear Quadratic (LQ) criterion. For a minimization of the LQ criterion is used spectral factorization with application of the MATLAB polynomial Toolbox. The designed polynomial digital Smith Predictors were verified in simulation conditions. Simulation model for a verification of the designed control algorithms was realized using experimental measured data on the laboratory heat exchanger. Time-delays (dead times) are found in many processes in industry. Time-delays are mainly caused by the time required to transport mass, energy or information, but they can also be caused by processing time or accumulation. The contribution is focused on a design of universal digital algorithm for control of great deal of processes with time-delay. This requirement is successfully satisfied with digital Smith Predictor based on Linear Quadratic (LQ) method. A minimization of the quadratic criterion is realized using spectral factorization. The designed algorithm is suitable for control of stable, unstable and non-minimum phase processes. The algorithms for control of individual processes influenced by external disturbance were verified. The program system MATLAB/SIMULINK was used for simulation of designed algorithms. Adaptive control of Three – Tank – System Using Polynomial Methods

Adaptive control of a three – tank - system laboratory model is presented. The objective laboratory model is a two input – two output (TITO) nonlinear system. It is based on experience with authentic industrial control applications. Two control algorithms utilizing polynomial theory and pole – placement were applied and compared. The first one is based on the traditional 1DOF (one – degree of freedom) configuration of the closed loop, the second one applies a decoupling method to suppress undesired cross – coupling. The algorithms implemented as self – tuning controllers are then used for control of the model. Results of real-time experiments are also included. Quality of control achieved by both methods is compared and discussed.

The contribution deals with an adaptive controllers’ library designed under MATLAB – Simulink environment. The library enables design and verification of two input – two output (TITO) discrete self – tuning controllers. It is a completely open system based on Simulink features. Design of the TITO controllers that are included into the library is based on polynomial methods. The controllers are based on various configurations of the closed loop system. Several decoupling compensators are also applied. The main idea of self – tuning controllers is discussed. In the paper are presented also several examples. The possibility of developing real – time applications using MATLAB Real – Time Workshop is discussed.

For predictive control in industry often very long horizons for control error and manipulated signal are used because of the slow processes which take place in the petrochemical industry. In order to reduce the computational effort some commercial predictive control program packages offer the ability to reduce the number of points in both horizons but do not recommend how to select the points which have to be considered in the horizon of the control error and manipulated variable. In this work the authors introduce an optimal choice not only of the horizon lengths itself but also for the strategy of reducing the number of points in the horizons. A genetic optimization algorithm was used both for the search for the optimal length of the horizons and for the best allocation of the points in the horizons. The results of the optimization process where used to deduct a simple rule.

Hybrid IMC Dead-Beat controller Design in Delta Domain

The paper presents a control system design technique in delta domain for IMC (Internal Model control) structure. Also a generalised form for delta domain Dead-beat control algorithm is given, a hybrid implementation of the controller (Z-domain combined with delta domain) is presented and its architecture is compared with the pure deltadomain implementation. The effect of placing the limitations in the IMC structure is also studied. The hybrid control structure is compared with a similar Dead-beat controller in Z-domain for second and third order plants (benchmarks). An illustrative sensitivity analysis between the hybrid control system and the Z-domain system has been performed.
