An important component in the industrial products supply chain is the distribution segment of the channel. The health and success of industrial distributors can often influence the success of manufacturers whom they represent. Although research has demonstrated how leadership is a key ingredient in the success of large corporations across industries, very little leadership research has been conducted in the industrial distribution market segment-especially at the local level. This research fills the gap between what is known about leadership in larger organizations, and the need for greater understanding of leadership at the local level of an industrial distributor. The authors of this study ask: how does leadership style affect the branchlevel sales and margin performance of industrial sales organizations? To answer this question, this study collected transformational and transactional leadership data from 100 branch-office locations of a national wholesale distributor using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Both leader and follower data were collected at each location. In all, nearly 300 people participated in the study. The authors calculated the predictive relationship between leadership style and average change in year-over-year sales and profit margin using a multiple regression analysis. The results show that a leader's self-reported transformational leadership was positively associated with sales and profit margin performance at the local level of an industrial distributor, while followers' ratings of a leader's transactional leadership style was negatively associated with sales performance. © The Journal of technology, Management, and applied Engineering, 2013.

The main purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between certain learning organization characteristics and change adaptation, innovation, and bottom-line organizational performance. The following learning organization characteristics were found to be the strongest predictors of rapid change adaptation, quick product or service introduction, and bottom-line organizational performance: open communications and information sharing;risk taking and new idea promotion;and information, facts, time, and resource availability to perform one's job in a professional manner.

Preserving important troubleshooting experience gained in industrial practice, often referred to as “tribal knowledge”, and making it readily available to be re-applied in similar situations represent a serious challenge for many companies in heavy industry. The solution is very often tied to building mental models to capture and express key latent cognitive variables. In this paper, we first attempt to identify the appropriate knowledge-based system diagnosis paradigms. A conceptual map-based framework is then proposed as a potential solution for retaining tribal knowledge. The validity and feasibility of the approach are demonstrated through a training program developed under the support of National Science Foundation (NSF) for improving engineering and technology students' troubleshooting skills.

As the pandemic Covid-19 erupted worldwide in 2020, the entire world rapidly adopted online education as a means of sustaining the education system in universities and schools. However, the majority of students were unfamiliar with these methods, as they were accustomed to traditional classrooms. Some students may prefer online education over traditional education, but online education stress remains a persistent issue. This study investigated the stress encountered by students during online learning sessions. 220 university students participated in this quantitative correlational study. On the basis of 11 items developed and tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, a questionnaire consisting of three constructs of online learning stress, financial capacity, and positive perception of online learning was developed and administered. The data were subsequently evaluated using the Structural Model in order to comprehend the relationships between the variables. The model was discovered to have a high level of fitness and validity. Positive perceptions of online learning were discovered to predict student stress negatively. The financial capacity of students to purchase the necessary devices for online learning sessions had no effect on their stress levels. However, financial capacity is the antecedent of how positively students viewed online learning for themselves. This suggests that for online education to be successful, it is crucial to consider the students' perceptions by evaluating their access to all the devices and technologies associated with online learning. © 2023 IEEE.

In continuation of our efforts toward the discovery of potent HIV-1 NNRTIs with diverse structures, a series of novel S-DACO analogues of 6-(2-cyclohexyl-1-alkyl)-2-(2-oxo-2-phenyl-ethylsulfanyl)pyrimi-din-4(3H)-ones were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antiviral activities in MT-4 cells. Most of these new compounds showed moderate to good activities against wild type HIV-1 with IC50 values ranging from 7.55 μmol/L to 0.018 μmol/L. Among them, compound 5c was identified as the most promising inhibitor against HIV-1 replication with an IC50=0.018 μmol/L, CC50=194 μmol/L, and SI=12791, which was much more potent than the reference drugs NVP and DLV and comparable to AZT and EFV. In addition, 5c also exhibited improved activity against double mutant HIV-1 strain RES056 compared to that of the reference drugs NVP/DLV and DB02. The preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) and molecular modeling studies were also discussed, which provides some useful indications for guiding the further rational design of new S-DACO analogues.

Due to the widespread nature of sun-related health risks, sophisticated UV monitoring systems are urgently needed. This research study introduces a cloud-based UV monitoring system with the intent of remotely tracking and analyzing UV exposure in real time. The system incorporates a network of UV sensors deployed in various locations, continuously collecting UV radiation data. These sensors are linked to a cloud system, which allows for easy sharing and processing of collected data. As a result, we're working to perfect a cutting-edge device that can monitor vitamin D absorption, measure cumulative UV exposure, and warn of impending danger. Extensive studies have demonstrated the benefits of UV exposure for both general health and protection against the newly discovered coronavirus. However, finding a happy medium is important because too much sun exposure can cause cancer, lupus flares, and cataracts. The proposed model gives users the ability to set their own daily UV exposure limits, taking into account clinically validated thresholds for various skin tones. The developed sensor module is able to measure the UV index with high precision even in bright sunlight because it closely mimics the skin erythema spectrum. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper reports magnetic microrobots with rolling capability. A magnetic object subjected to an externally rotating magnetic field would be rotated due to the tendency of alignment between its internal magnetization and the field. Based on this principle, a magnetic microrobot in a spherical body with a diameter of several hundred microns was designed and fabricated. To remotely power and control the microrobot, a rotating magnet was used to generate a rotating magnetic field. Driven by this field, the microrobot can freely roll on three-dimensional surfaces. These surfaces can be in air, water or silicon oil. In a dry environment, a microrobot with a diameter of 440 mu m achieved a maximum linear speed of 13.2 mm s(-1).

The study focuses on the choice of prevention schemes of the appearance and recurrence of gangrene of the lower extremities, depending on any of the degrees of confidence that the patient will have gangrene or will experience its relapse. The degree of confidence is determined using the fuzzy logic of decision making on the relevant membership functions. For each of the selected classes, an appropriate prevention scheme has been developed, the effectiveness of which was tested using the theory of measuring latent variables and the synthesis of mathematical models of their choice depending on the degree of risk of the occurrence and recurrence of lower extremities gangrene. Model statistical tests showed that compared with traditional prevention schemes the use of the proposed models can increase the rate of positive results in the absence of lower extremities gangrene and reduce the possibility of relapse (recurrent changes by 42%, risk of amputation by 35%). © 2021 by Begell House, Inc.

Recently, most businesses have introduced a system for improving their responsibility to the customers in terms of job improvement. For example, small-quantity batch production increases cost but improve efficiency of management. Companies have been introduced the balanced scorecard to evaluate their management as part of improvement, while they suffer from many trials and errors. Many businesses still have difficulty in introducing balance scorecard concept in their process, but we suggest a method to successfully introduce the balance scorecard. This study aims to suggest a new performance measurement model reflecting relative importance of the key performance indicators for each factor. Our model is applied to several companies in real-world to validate the new model. Also, our study proposes a methodology for an adequate performance measurement using multiple attribute decision making.
