The undergraduate industrial biotechnology program, for the development of a multi-sector alliance to strengthen biotechnology programs in response to economic development based on high tech, introduced by University of Poerto Rico is discussed. The program involves all stakeholders and is aimed at preparing professionals capable of developing and advancing the biotechnology field. The program contributes towards the social and economical development of Puerto Rico using the knowledge and high tech industries. The university takes initiatives to include an undergraduate industrial biotechnology program, a PhD in biotechnology and the development development of biotechnology research centers.

We analyzed rolling of neutrophils or transfected CHO cells expressing PSGL-1 on immobilized P-selectin in a flow chamber. After tethering, cells initially rolled rapidly and unstably but then progressively rolled more slowly and more regularly. Small, uniform rolling steps occurred in cells that developed multiple long adhesive tethers, as visualized by both scanning electron microscopy and differential interference contrast microscopy. Deletion of the cytoplasmic domain of PSGL-1 impaired cytoskeletal interactions and rolling stability but did not prevent extrusions of membrane tethers.

We investigate experimentally the physical processes underlying pulsed cellular microsurgery and micromanipulation using nanosecond 532- and 1064-nm laser pulses focused at high numerical aperture. We find that the laser parameters employed for many microirradiation techniques are congruent with those leading to optical breakdown in water. We determine the size and shape of the laser-induced plasma, pressure of the emitted shock wave, and size and energy of the cavitation bubble formed by the expanding plasma. We discuss implications of the results for biophysical microirradiation procedures.

Advising is an important task for success of college students, especially students with professional majors, such as engineering. In addition to meeting the breadth of a college education, students in a professional major must also complete depth of study in math and science and the application of this knowledge in professional development. The requirements are strict and the sequencing of courses is critical for both academic success and efficiency in graduating by the desired date. Advisors are more than schedulers of classes. The selection and scheduling of classes should be efficient so both the student and the advisor can focus on issues critical to the academic success of the student. In a global sense, advisors provide the service of career development ranging in process from selection of major to professional development and management of a system of life-long learning. This paper identifies the duties of a modern advisor and discusses the advising process with the aid of web-based tools to increase both the efficiency and quality of advisement. Applications of this technology in the College of engineering at Texas Tech University have been very successful. Students appreciate the quickness of the process and the ability to consider and plan all activities - not just the courses. Advisors are also happy with the shift away from scheduling and toward professional and personal issues that promote long-term academic and professional success.

Many difficulties with the properties of coating surfaces and those occurring during the printing of coated surfaces are linked to non-uniform properties within the coating layer. For example, back trap mottle problems are related to non-uniform setting of ink from one point to another within the sheet. While there are methods to characterize bulk properties of the coating layer, there are few choices with regard to small scale characterization of the coating layer. Here we present a new method and device to characterize the local porosity and surface energy of a porous layer. The device is a hemispherical probe with an applied fluid. Upon contact of the fluid with the substrate, a liquid bridge is formed. The force on the probe is recorded as a function of time. The peak force is related to the local surface energy of the sample. The slope of the force-time curve is related to the local porosity of the sample. A model is proposed to describe the force-time curve for porous substrates. The model compares well with the experiments for a range of substrates and fluids.

The large piezoelectric constants of GaN suggest possible application of GaN-based materials in piezoelectric sensors, among other areas. GaN’s wide band gap implies that these sensors will fare well over a broad temperature range and/or in a harsh environment. In this work, films of gallium nitride approximately 0.75 micron thick and grown by MOCVD were subject to an externally-imposed radial stress condition. Deposition was performed in a commercial MOCVD reactor (CVD, Inc.) at 1323K using trimethylgallium and ammonia as the chemical precursors. The substrate was one-inch diameter silicon (111). After deposition, titanium dots were deposited in various locations, including the wafer center, by evaporation. Stress was applied to the film/substrate system using a modified micrometer head (Mitutoyo) mounted to an Ionic Systems Basic Stressgauge (model 30285). Stress levels were calculated based on the magnitude of the imposed deflection as read from the micrometer head display, and the piezoelectric response at any particular dot with respect to the center dot was measured by measuring the voltage difference using a digital multimeter (Keithley 175). The micrometer head impinged on the center dot and served as one electrical contact point. Effective piezoelectric coefficients were measured as a function of imposed radial stress. Applied stresses in the range of 1 to 5 GPa resulted in effective piezoelectric coefficients ranging from -0.6 to -2.0 × 10-5 C/m2

A novel micromechanical model is proposed to predict mechanical and viscoelastic properties of pigmented coating layers. The model describes the macroscopic response of a coating by calculating microscopic interactions between pigment particles that are connected with "latex bridges." The model is applied to a sinusoidal deformation and compared with experimental data. Results explain changes in mechanical properties of coatings at different pigment volume concentrations.
