We present an improved methodology for a thermal transient method enabling simultaneous measurement of thermal conductivity and specific heat of nanoscale structures with one-dimensional heat flow. The temporal response of a sample to finite duration heat pulse inputs for both short (1 ns) and long (5μs) pulses is analyzed and exploited to deduce the thermal properties. Excellent agreement has been obtained between the recovered physical parameters and computational simulations.

A global binarization methods of the passport image based on global iterative threshold and local analysis is put forward in this paper after several binarization algorithms of document image are deeply studied according to the characteristics that passport image documents are obviously affected by the complex image background and the shading grid security-lines. Model of the method is simple, and easy to implement, can filter out noise availably. The character strokes can segmented from the background clearly.

Starbucks coffee shops have been spread rapidly and widely all over the world, which implies that there may be diffusive powers among them and thus can be represented as social networks. In particular, the spreading speed of Starbuck Korea was at record levels. In this paper, we constructed social networks using the information about Starbuck Korea (ex. latitude and longitude of each Starbucks store in Korea, the opening date of them, opening orders of them, etc.) and evaluated influence scores of each store to measure the spreading power of Starbucks in Korea. Here, we proposed two network evaluation models, Dynamic Influence Model and Static Influence Model. Through these models, we can represent location based social networks and evaluate each node's diffusive power for expanding the size of networks and for spreading coverage all over the network.

cognitive radio with spectrum sharing feature is a promising technique to address the spectrum under-utilization problem in dynamically changing environments. In this paper, achievable capacity gain of spectrum sharing systems over dynamic fading environments is studied. For the analysis, a theoretical fading model called hyper fading model that is suitable to the dynamic nature of cognitive radio channel is proposed. Closed-form expression of probability density function (PDF) and cumulative density function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for secondary users in spectrum sharing systems are derived. In addition, the capacity gains achievable with spectrum sharing systems in high and low power regions are obtained. Numerical simulations are performed to study the effects of different fading figures, average powers, interference temperature, and number of secondary users on the achievable capacity.

Parallel rendering algorithms usually suffer from high load imbalance during execution, due to the irregular nature of the datasets. In this paper, we propose a new load balancing scheme for tile-based parallel rendering that includes strategies for load estimation, tile decomposition and tile assignment. The load estimation strategy computes the rendering cost for each pixel, and uses it as a prediction for the next frame. The tile decomposition strategy adaptively divides the screen into tiles based on the computed costs, until an evenly tile partition is achieved. The tile assignment strategy distributes the tiles among rendering processors, based on a 2-optimal scheduling. Experimental results show that our scheme achieves significant performance gains by reducing the load imbalance when compared to the traditional tile subdivision and static random distribution schemes.

This paper presents a now intelligent approach for adaptive control of non-linear dynamic systems. Based on past researches on emotionally intelligent-control systems, the introduced method is a modified version of Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent Controller (BELBIC), a physiologically motivated system previously developed and successfully used in control applications. The proposed approach is able to quickly respond to change in environmental and dynamic system and realizes online diroct-adaptivc-control scheme. Showing very good robustness, BELBIC is very simple in implementation and imposes very low computation load on the control system. This modified algorithm has boon successfully applied to real-time longitudinal control of an agile air-to-air missile which has over-changing non-linear dynamics.

Gerry, Ma, and Vrscay [Phys. Rev. A 39, 668 (1989)] studied the time evolution of SU(1,1) coherent states for the damped harmonic oscillator by introducing the Kanai-Caldirola Hamiltonian. The purposes of this Brief Report are to demonstrate that there are somewhat serious errors on their results and to correct them. Most of the figures given in their work are reproduced with correction in order to facilitate our explanation of results.
