Federated learning(FL)is an emerging privacy-preserving distributed computing paradigm,enabling numerous clients to collaboratively train machine learning models without the necessity of transmitting clients’private datasets to the central *** most existing research where the local datasets of clients are assumed to be unchanged over time throughout the whole FL process,our study addresses such scenarios in this paper where clients’datasets need to be updated periodically,and the server can incentivize clients to employ as fresh as possible datasets for local model *** primary objective is to design a client selection strategy to minimize the loss of the global model for FL loss within a constrained *** this end,we introduce the concept of“Age of Information”(AoI)to quantitatively assess the freshness of local datasets and conduct a theoretical analysis of the convergence bound in our AoI-aware FL *** on the convergence bound,we further formulate our problem as a restless multi-armed bandit(RMAB)***,we relax the RMAB problem and apply the Lagrangian Dual approach to decouple it into multiple ***,we propose a Whittle’s Index Based Client Selection(WICS)algorithm to determine the set of selected *** addition,comprehensive simulations substantiate that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce training loss and enhance the learning accuracy compared with some state-of-the-art methods.

P3DC:Reducing DRAM Cache Hit Latency by Hybrid Mappings

Die-stacked dynamic random access memory(DRAM)caches are increasingly advocated to bridge the performance gap between the on-chip cache and the main *** fully realize their potential,it is essential to improve DRAM cache hit rate and lower its cache hit *** order to take advantage of the high hit-rate of set-association and the low hit latency of direct-mapping at the same time,we propose a partial direct-mapped die-stacked DRAM cache called *** design is motivated by a key observation,i.e.,applying a unified mapping policy to different types of blocks cannot achieve a high cache hit rate and low hit latency *** address this problem,P3DC classifies data blocks into leading blocks and following blocks,and places them at static positions and dynamic positions,respectively,in a unified set-associative *** also propose a replacement policy to balance the miss penalty and the temporal locality of different *** addition,P3DC provides a policy to mitigate cache thrashing due to block type *** results demonstrate that P3DC can reduce the cache hit latency by 20.5%while achieving a similar cache hit rate compared with typical set-associative caches.P3DC improves the instructions per cycle(IPC)by up to 66%(12%on average)compared with the state-of-the-art direct-mapped cache—BEAR,and by up to 19%(6%on average)compared with the tag-data decoupled set-associative cache—DEC-A8.

When data privacy is imposed as a necessity,Federated learning(FL)emerges as a relevant artificial intelligence field for developing machine learning(ML)models in a distributed and decentralized *** allows ML models to be trained on local devices without any need for centralized data transfer,thereby reducing both the exposure of sensitive data and the possibility of data interception by malicious third *** paradigm has gained momentum in the last few years,spurred by the plethora of real-world applications that have leveraged its ability to improve the efficiency of distributed learning and to accommodate numerous participants with their data *** virtue of FL,models can be learned from all such distributed data sources while preserving data *** aim of this paper is to provide a practical tutorial on FL,including a short methodology and a systematic analysis of existing software ***,our tutorial provides exemplary cases of study from three complementary perspectives:i)Foundations of FL,describing the main components of FL,from key elements to FL categories;ii)Implementation guidelines and exemplary cases of study,by systematically examining the functionalities provided by existing software frameworks for FL deployment,devising a methodology to design a FL scenario,and providing exemplary cases of study with source code for different ML approaches;and iii)Trends,shortly reviewing a non-exhaustive list of research directions that are under active investigation in the current FL *** ultimate purpose of this work is to establish itself as a referential work for researchers,developers,and data scientists willing to explore the capabilities of FL in practical applications.

The digitization of healthcare data coupled with advances in computational capabilities has propelled the adoption of machine learning (ML) in healthcare. However, these methods can perpetuate or even exacerbate existing disparities, leading to fairness concerns such as the unequal distribution of resources and diagnostic inaccuracies among different demographic groups. Addressing these fairness problems is paramount to prevent further entrenchment of social injustices. In this survey, we analyze the intersection of fairness in ML and healthcare disparities. We adopt a framework based on the principles of distributive justice to categorize fairness concerns into two distinct classes: equal allocation and equal performance. We provide a critical review of the associated fairness metrics from a ML standpoint and examine biases and mitigation strategies across the stages of the ML lifecycle, discussing the relationship between biases and their countermeasures. The article concludes with a discussion on the pressing challenges that remain unaddressed in ensuring fairness in healthcare ML and proposes several new research directions that hold promise for developing ethical and equitable ML applications in healthcare. © 2024 IEEE.

Agreements of Nonlinear Opinion Dynamics in Switching Social Networks

This article formulates and analyzes agreements of the nonlinear opinion dynamics in social networks according to switching interactions, where the agents' susceptibilities depend on current states. These switching interactions are formulated by switching directed graphs with some mild joint connectivity, and depicted by nonlinear switching model. An extended LaSalle invariance principle is established for analyzing the agreements of this switching model as well as three specialized scenarios, where the limiting equations formed by the weak∗ convergence are used to study the steady-state behavior so that the stability analysis is substantially simplified in the sense that the 'max - min' Lyapunov function may be assumed to be constant along any bounded forward complete solutions of limiting equations. Examples and simulations are used to verify the obtained results. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. This paper describes a Plastic Waste Hotspot Detection System which has been developed in an international collaborative research project to realize an 'Environmental AI-Human Actions integration' with marine plastic waste reduction actions. In this project, various local conditions are obtained to the system to realize an environmentally resilient society. The nature conservation activities such as marine plastic waste collection and reduction actions are implemented based on these conditions. In the process of integration of Environmental AI and Human Actions, the effects of these activities and activists' contribution to environmental improvement and global-scale knowledge are accumulated, shared, analyzed, and visualized through global-scale analysis. This paper describes the Plastic Waste Hotspot Detection system as one of the systems that integrate AI systems and human actions. This paper examines the feasibility and effectiveness of the system through the fieldwork tests in Phuket, Thailand and Surabaya, Indonesia. © 2024 IEEE.

Since the advent of smartphones, capturing images has become deeply embedded in human behavior, evolving into a fundamental part of daily life. Research into human perception of image quality is crucial as people frequently acquire and interpret images. Automation in image processing systems is vital for quantifying image quality, addressing issues like blurriness, noise, and compression that can significantly degrade the visual experience. While image processing professionals can quickly identify such distortions, integrating human visual perception into automated system design remains challenging. Consequently, machine-based evaluation of image quality is a critical research area. Image quality assessment algorithms aim to approximate human visual judgments. Although deep learning has shown remarkable success in various real-world tasks, such as object detection and image classification, its application in image quality assessment is still evolving. The primary challenge is assessing image quality without explicitly considering human perception, making it a dynamic area of ongoing research. A significant hurdle is the lack of images with quality scores, particularly differential average feedback scores provided by image quality experts on a 1-100 scale. This limitation hinders the development of robust models for image quality assessment, highlighting the need for innovative solutions in this evolving research domain. © 2024 IEEE.

The software development process mostly depends on accurately identifying both essential and optional ***,user needs are typically expressed in free-form language,requiring significant time and human resources to translate these into clear functional and non-functional *** address this challenge,various machine learning(ML)methods have been explored to automate the understanding of these requirements,aiming to reduce time and human ***,existing techniques often struggle with complex instructions and large-scale *** our study,we introduce an innovative approach known as the Functional and Non-functional Requirements Classifier(FNRC).By combining the traditional random forest algorithm with the Accuracy Sliding Window(ASW)technique,we develop optimal sub-ensembles that surpass the initial classifier’s accuracy while using fewer *** results demonstrate that our FNRC methodology performs robustly across different datasets,achieving a balanced Precision of 75%on the PROMISE dataset and an impressive Recall of 85%on the CCHIT *** datasets consistently maintain an F-measure around 64%,highlighting FNRC’s ability to effectively balance precision and recall in diverse *** findings contribute to more accurate and efficient software development processes,increasing the probability of achieving successful project outcomes.

Enhancing intrusion detection in IIoT: optimized CNN model with multi-class SMOTE balancing

This work introduces an intrusion detection system (IDS) tailored for industrial internet of things (IIoT) environments based on an optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The model is trained on a dataset that was balanced using a novel multi-class implementation of synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) that ensures equal representation of all classes. Additionally, systematic optimization will be used to fine tune the hyperparameters of the CNN model and mitigate the effects of the increased size of the training dataset. Evaluation results will demonstrate substantial improvement in performance when the optimized CNN model is trained on the balanced dataset. The proposed IDS will be evaluated using the IIoT-specific WUSTL-IIOT-2021 dataset, and then its generalization capability will be verified using the non-domain specific UNSW_NB15 dataset. The model’s performance will be evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The results will demonstrate that the proposed IDS is highly effective with performance exceeding 99.9% on all performance metrics. The IDS is also highly effective in detecting intrusion for generic IT networks achieving improvements in excess of 30% compared to the default baseline model. The results emphasize the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed IDS model, making it a reliable and adaptable solution for enhancing network security across diverse network environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
