Sulphate attack is one of the deterioration mechanisms of concrete. This is characterised by the formation of chemical species that cause expansion, subsequent cracking, and the eventual loss of concrete strength. Production of acid rain and high elevation of temperature, as manifestations of climate change, can initiate and/or accelerate the process of sulphate attack, reducing the service life of concrete structures which could lead to social, environmental, and economic damage. The laboratory developed and validated ion chromatographic-based and spectrophotometric-based methods for the analyses of water-soluble sulphate and acid-soluble sulphate in concrete, respectively. This is to assess the laboratory's capability in generating reliable and accurate measurement results for sulphate determination. This will support regulations on sulphate content of concrete, ensuring that construction products conform to the standard specifications. Method performance characteristics evaluated were linearity and working range, repeatability, intermediate precision, and trueness. The methods were found to be fit for the intended purpose of sulphate determination in routine analysis of concrete samples. © 2024

Nanotechnology is emerging in the Philippines as there are growing industries where nanomaterials are used as part of a commercial product's components. With this, there are growing demands for testing of nano-enabled products, especially the nanoparticle geometric size measurements to support the claims declared by manufacturers, a consideration in nanosafety. Competence of analytical laboratories is of primary concern to ensure that accurate and reliable test results are used in conformity assessments in the field of nanotechnology. As per clause 7.7.2 of the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017, interlaboratory comparisons can be participated as means to compare performance with other laboratories. International interlaboratory comparison was participated by the Philippines and promising results were obtained which are at par with countries with established methodologies in testing nanomaterials. Locally, the first interlaboratory comparison was organized. Satisfactory results were obtained but areas for improvement were also determined for some of the participating laboratories. © 2024

Chloride is a corrosive anion that can attack steel and other metal embedded materials in concrete structures leading to its degradation. Chloride in concrete may come from the materials used for making concrete such as cement. Hence, it is important to have a reliable method for determining chloride in cement, in this case the water-soluble chloride which is representative of chloride that may pose corrosion risk. In this study, ASTM C1218/C1218M-20 was used as a guide for sample extraction and the water-soluble chloride was later quantified by ion chromatography. Validation of this method from extraction to instrumental determination was conducted by assessment of the linear range, detection limit, precision, and trueness. It was found that the method was suitable for the determination of water-soluble chloride content in cement. © 2023 IMEKO TC8, TC11 and TC24 Joint Conference. All rights reserved.

The coconut shell-based industry maintains its significant role in the economic growth of the Philippines, with the country being one of the leading exporters of coconut products in the world. Currently, coconut shells are processed into charcoal briquettes and activated carbon. However, due to accidents related to the transport of these commodities, shipping lines have imposed stringent policies to ensure the safe handling of charcoal on board. Furthermore, there is an existing mandate for the accreditation of third-party laboratories for the quality testing of charcoal. The use of control materials such as Certified Reference Material (CRM) ensures the accuracy and reliability of analytical procedures conducted in the laboratory. However, the availability of CRMs is limited and are often too expensive for routine chemical testing. The use of in-house quality control material (IQCM) is a practical approach in establishing quality measurements in the laboratory. In this study, a coconut shell-based in-house quality control material was developed and characterized for proximate analysis of solid fuels. The calculated p-values using one-way ANOVA for the volatile combustible matter and ash from the homogeneity studies were 0.10 and 0.90, respectively. Furthermore, a trend analysis was established for the monthly stability study. Evaluation of homogeneity and stability data showed that the IQCM is sufficiently homogenous and stable and is fit to be used as a quality control material for routine testing of solid fuels in the absence of CRM. © 2024

This article explores the use of electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) for subsurface characterization of pile road embankments in Ayutthaya, Thailand. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of these geophysical techniques and identify any limitations or challenges faced during data collection and analysis. ERI is employed to evaluate changes in resistivity before and after pile installation, providing insights into variations in material properties. MASW is used to estimate shear wave velocities, particularly focusing on the impact of pile installation on subsurface strength. The results reveal significant changes in subsurface properties following pile installation, indicating variations in material rigidity and strength near the piles. However, challenges were encountered in accurately determining the depth of piles using ERI due to potential interference from off-plane objects. These findings highlight the importance of integrating multiple geophysical techniques for comprehensive subsurface characterization. Further research is recommended to address these limitations and enhance accuracy in assessing subsurface conditions for road embankments constructed on soft clay terrain. © 2024 IEEE.

K-SVD (K-Singular Value Decomposition)is a com-monly used dictionary learning method that progressively opti-mizes dictionaries to better represent data by iterating sparse coding and dictionary update steps. However, with the increasing data size, the traditional K -SVD method faces significant challenges in terms of computational efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes an asynchronous distributed parallel K-SVD method based on Ray framework to cope with the computational efficiency problem in large-scale data processing. This method achieves efficient parallel computation by decomposing the sparse coding and dictionary updating steps of the K-SVD method into multiple independent tasks and utilizing the distributed scheduling capability of the Ray framework. Since the zero elements of the coefficient matrix are unevenly distributed, we introduce a stride partitioning approach when performing the decomposition. In addition, in order to avoid the method falling into local optima and failing to find global optima due to parallelism, this paper synchronizes with the global at the same time as the atomic update of the dictionary. Meanwhile, for the purpose of avoiding the overhead caused by data synchronization, a parameter server is introduced to realize asynchronous updating of dictionary and coefficient matrix to reduce the overhead caused by communication. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional K-SVD method, the method proposed in this paper has a significant advantage in computational efficiency and is able to efficiently process hyperspectral image datasets under the premise of guaranteeing the sparse representation accuracy. Compared with the synchronous parallel K-SVD method, the proposed method has faster error convergence and does not fall into local optima. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic and environmental impact analysis of electric two-wheeler batteries in *** technical comparison reveals that sodium-ion(Na-ion)and lithium-ion(Li-ion)batteries outperform lead-acid batteries in various parameters,with Na-ion and Li-ion batteries exhibiting higher energy densities,higher power densities,longer cycle lives,faster charge rates,better compactness,lighter weight and lower self-discharge *** economic comparison,Na-ion batteries were found to be~12-14%more expensive than Li-ion ***,the longer lifespans and higher energy densities of Na-ion and Li-ion batteries can offset their higher costs through improved performance and long-term ***-acid batteries have the highest environmental impact,while Li-ion batteries demonstrate better environmental performance and potential for ***-ion batteries offer promising environmental advantages with their abundance,lower cost and lower toxic and hazardous material *** recycling processes can further enhance the environmental benefits of Na-ion ***,this research examines the potential of Na-ion batteries as a cheaper alternative to Li-ion batteries,considering India’s abundant sodium resources in regions such as Rajasthan,Chhattisgarh,Jharkhand and others.

This paper studies the influence of bearing speed under a self-lubricating system. In the early 20th century, specialized precision manufacturing companies were founded, further establishing ball bearings as a very valuable, high-quality, and easily accessible mechanical component. This study used a self-lubricating system to achieve constant temperature and precision control. The spindle speed was analysed and tested at three speeds under a fixed preloading of 13000 N and a fixed lubricating oil viscosity index of 15. The results showed the spindle speed increases, the heat generated increases, and internal component temperature changes also increase. When the spindle speed is 12,000 rpm, the temperature of the inner ring of the bearing increases and changes by 166.4 %, causing fatigue and scratch wear at the same time. Using a lubricating oil self-lubricating system can slow down the temperature rise rate of components. The operation system can quickly reach a stable state, reducing thermal deformation and temperature accuracy errors. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The plants and trees are either utilized partially or wholly as a source of food and for its medicinal value. A wide variety of plants, trees and its parts are used from an ancient time due to its pharmaceutical and health-beneficial properties. In this perspective, the palmyra tree has its own cultural, nutritional and medicinal value of its own. The different parts of palmyra tree like roots, stem, flower, fruit, sprout, spadix, seed embryo are potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-diuretic activity due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. This review article mainly focused on the nutritional and pharmacological properties, as well as the health benefits of the palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer). Different parts of the palmyra tree exhibit unique medicinal value. This review outlines the pharmacological and health benefits of palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer) especially in treating stomach and lung disorders, skin inflammations and other associated ailments. This review also highlights the possible inhibitory action of different parts of palmyra against harmful microbes and other disease-causing agents. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
